Hi everyone, just got the Winter Holiday Train 10254, here are the required Powerfunctions elements detailed on the back of the box if you're interested:

8879, 8884, 88000, 88002

And of course we already knew that from the images of the box! Apart from that, if you are into trains:

- you will likely already have way too many train (pwm) remote controllers

- plenty of battery boxes and even a few LiPo's

So a typical train fan will only need a motor and an IR receiver I think in most cases (or lease them during the season from some city train).

If you're lucky enough to live near a Lego store then these are available there too - my local one keeps them in a little tray hidden away under the Technic sets. The IR receiver always seems to be the hardest to find...

If all you want to do is run it around the tree then you don't really need remote control and receiver; just get the rechargable battery and use the speed control on that.

They don't do this in the US. When I visited the store in Cardiff, my mind was blown. I've been to about 30 different Lego stores in the US and not a single one sells PF components a la carte.

Last time I was in Dallas, I saw a small box labelled "Power Functions" on a shelf. At the time, I did not need any of them, so I did not look in the box.

Just watched Jang's video with the PF installed. The battery box and receiver are definitely visible. It will not stop me from buying the train and PF, but hopefully there is a mod that can be done to at least cover the top of the battery box with round black 2x2 plates to at least give it a look of coal instead of just the exposed top of the battery box.

That was one of my complaints as well, and I guess the reason I still prefer the old 9V system with electric tracks.

I still have some 9-volt stuff lying around so I may just decide to use it for this train instead of the PF stuff. Plus the fact that curved 9-volt is easy to get and rather cheap (we always ended up with too much of it).

"...complaints..." "...hopefully a mod can be done..."

As though essentially anything isn't possible if you were to work at it.

Ummm... Yes? I have complaints about the new train system, hence I still use the old one. That doesn't mean the new one doesn't bother me. Plus, the fact that Lego doesn't support the old system anymore means that the supply of those parts will diminish as the years go by.
