Beck Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Hello everyone! Here's my rendition of the PRR B1 switcher. This was my first train MOC that I attempted over a year ago, but didn't really like it. So I tore it apart and created this with which I am quite pleased. Although it's been one of those MOCs where I feel that I'm never sure if its finished. I chose to model the variant with the red lined windows, but without the yellow railings because there aren't yellow droid arms. I chose to power only 4 out of the 6 wheels because I couldn't make drivetrain and powertrain any more compact. What do you think? http://www.railpictures.net/images/d1/3/6/7/5367.1362590808.jpg http://www.vistadome.com/trains/rrmuseumpa/prr5690.jpg More Pictures Quote
jtlan Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 (edited) I think you nailed the overall shape, although the sideframes seem under-detailed compared to the rest of it. However, I think powering the blind wheels won't add anything because they float just above the tracks. Man with a hat Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Nice. Looks good. Looking at the coment above, how does it run? Quote
jtlan Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 (edited) My mistake, hit "quote" instead of edit. Can a mod delete this post of mine? Edited September 6, 2016 by jtlan Quote
CrispyBassist Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Very nice build! I agree with jtlan that powering the blind drivers won't give you any additional traction but it does make it look better to have all three axles spinning. From your photo it does look like you have enough space to power that first set of drivers, though I could be wrong. jtlan Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 From your photo it does look like you have enough space to power that first set of drivers, though I could be wrong. It looks like the driveshaft is immediately under the M motor and therefore can't have any gears on it. What's this and where do I sign up?? We should make a global boxcabs thread or something. Do the Eurobricks Forums support groups? Quote
CrispyBassist Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 It looks like the driveshaft is immediately under the M motor and therefore can't have any gears on it. Ah, I see now! I hadn't spotted that at first glance. We should make a global boxcabs thread or something. Do the Eurobricks Forums support groups? I guess I could start by posting my two boxcabs here. I think I've only ever posted them to Flickr. Quote
Beck Posted September 6, 2016 Author Posted September 6, 2016 (edited) First of all, thank you very much for the comments! I agree that the side frames could be a bit better. Although it runs quite well due to the gearing of a 1:6.6 ratio from the M motor. It was able to haul two of my 54 stud long cargo wagons, albeit very very slowly. Jtlan is correct, If I were to move the M motor one plate upwards to accommodate the gearing on the 3rd axle, the roof would have to be raised one plate since the receiver sits directly on top of the motor(not even a one plate gap) and the gears connecting the drivetrain to the motor would not mesh. I also forgot to add that the battery box controlled by the 2x2 round plate on the roof, allowing for easy on/off switches. Edited September 6, 2016 by Beck Quote
dr_spock Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Very nice B1. Good job squeezing in the Power Functions. I made my B1 into a BB1 to have more room for the Power Functions. Slow moving is correct for the B1. I don't think they went faster than 25 M.P.H. in real life. You can join the Boxcab Consortium with me, Commander Wolf, and dr_spock :) There is a consortium? Are there annual dues to join? Quote
