steph77 Posted June 28, 2016 Author Posted June 28, 2016 I actually worked hard ont the gearbox and engine integration. Here is the result. the gearbox has 4 speed sequentially actionnated by the lateral knob. this solution is obvious at this scale and very performant. it's also 100% reliable. My system do not use any rubberband... The V4 engine by 90° is finaly custom made. nearly no friction in it and a design that fits well under the engine cover. Pictures: Quote
syclone Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 It is amazing how many features you got on a such small scale car! Quote
Vectormatic Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Out of curiosity, why the custom engine rather then a lego fake one? This design doesnt look any smaller then a "normal" lego one. Quote
steph77 Posted June 29, 2016 Author Posted June 29, 2016 my custom design has two advantages: -The lower part of the engine is less wide than the lego one, so it can be placed a bit lower -The gear to connect to the gearbox is one stud more to the front of the car wich is appreciable due to the compactness of my gearbox design However i am still asking myself wich of both desing render the best ? skppo Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 (edited) While the custom engine looks neat, I think the lego one might show the functionality (change in speed) a bit better. Great little car, I can imagine lego producing something very much like this as an official set. Agreed. Edited June 29, 2016 by skppo Quote
steph77 Posted June 30, 2016 Author Posted June 30, 2016 Work still in progress I worked on the rear end actually and i finaly have this design. The back hood opens in one and only piece wich is a neat feature for playability but less for design L I asked myself a long time what was the better solution. Finally i decided that playability had to be respected at max (this car is actually not mine anymore, my son play with it all the time) I post a comparaison size pic to illustrate the compactness of the car. I also reverse some gearing into the gearbox but th’s all detail at this time All comment, are welcome especially on the rear wing that doesnt’t still convicts me (i use my whole stock of panels so i had to do with my leftover white parts) Pictures : Quote
Vectormatic Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Looks quite good! As for the rear wing, i think the horizontal wing is too low (my modded 42039 has the horizontal plane 2 studs below the top of the vertical tail fin), and the wing attachments to the body are too far inboard. Moving it up two studs and moving the side supports to the outside of the rear should clear up the looks As for size, its a bit bigger then i was expecting, based on the comparison with 42000, it is actually quite close to 42039 right? I do think the construction method of the rear hood is a lot better though (some pics of my modded 42039 for reference in the rear wing stuff) If Lego would bring this (or something similar) out as an official set i'd be running to the shops! Quote
steph77 Posted June 30, 2016 Author Posted June 30, 2016 For the dimensions : Mine is 45*19*11 studs 42039 is 49*23*13 studs Even if the dimensions are quiet equivalents mine looks more compact due to 2 studs less wide and a global volume of the cockpit that is globaly less big. I also used shorter whells that fits better to my scale. I will change the rear wing and see …. Thanks Quote
Erik Leppen Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 I'm pretty sure 42039 is much larger than that. Are you sure you're not confusing studs and cm? Quote
Rishab N Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Fantastic car. I'm amazed how compact it is, yet has so many functions Quote
syclone Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Amazing, maybe if the the rear wing (spoiler?) would be a stud or two higher it would look better Quote
schraubedrin Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 What an awesome car. I just love the "flatness" of LMP-cars. Can you post another picture of your secuential shifting mechanism? i don't understand it yet <OT> It's actually a wing, as airflow is allowed on the underside. When the air is only flowing over it, it's called a spoiler </OT> Quote
Vectormatic Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Can you post another picture of your secuential shifting mechanism? i don't understand it yet It works the same way as the gearbox on the official porsche, its hard to put into words, but imagine a normal lego 4 speed, but instead of one selector for both driving rings moving in two directions, each driving ring has its own selector, which is toggled between both gears and neutral, the selectors are moved by a steering link, both steering links (one on each side of the gearbox) connect to single rotating axle with a 2 stud liftarm, but with a 90 degree offset. This way, when one arm is pushed all the way forward (selecting one of the two gears on that side of the gearbox), the other liftarm from the gear selection axle is pointing up (or down), pulling the driving ring into neutral. Cycling the selection axle at 90 degree increments, each time one arm is pointing front or back (selecting a gear), the other one is in neutral. Quote
steph77 Posted July 1, 2016 Author Posted July 1, 2016 (edited) This is exactly that. I do not use any shiffter in it too. I simply use a knob wheel as ‘HOG’ this solution offers exactly the same feeling than a lever and is more compact, reliable and fun to use. I had never to forget that i build moc destinated to my children that play with it. This car must be at the same time solid and simple to use. I finished the rear end, following your advises. I’am pretty satisfied of it. Here are the final pictures for this thread before i asked a friend of mine to take better pics with a professional camera for the contest entry. Thanks all for your attention and kind comments on it. I had a lot of fun to build this car and a strong motivation partially enforced by all of your interest. Time for going on holliday now, no more time for Mocing no more J Thanks ! Pictures : EDIT: I have a picture upside down and no way to rotate it (sorry) Edited July 1, 2016 by steph77 Quote
Vectormatic Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 That new rear wing looks a lot better, and i see you sourced two extra curved blue panels, no more purple! Excellent build, i do hope (and think so honestly) you will win a prize in the contest! Quote
ddeklerk Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 This looks like it could be an actual Lego set. It looks really nice. And I don't know why, but for some reason I really like the idea of the hood and the trunk opening like that. The way that it lifts an entire section of the body, including the wheel covers, is somehow satisfying to me. And if I don't use the correct terms here - I don't know a lot about cars, so please educate me Quote
steph77 Posted July 2, 2016 Author Posted July 2, 2016 How short one only minute it is! Here is the video for this contest. So short.... [media] [media] Quote
Richard Dower Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 are you using 14L flex hoses in White?.....super rare, 8461 Quote
steph77 Posted July 2, 2016 Author Posted July 2, 2016 No these are standard 12 L flex from the cargo plane Quote
steph77 Posted July 2, 2016 Author Posted July 2, 2016 (edited) sorry for double post but here is the final HD movie (complete edition) Edited July 2, 2016 by steph77 Quote
syclone Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 (edited) I really wish you win a prize , the design is awesome and the functions are impressive! Did you mean these photos? Edited July 2, 2016 by LXF Quote
captainmib Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 How much force did you need to get the steering in the H-frame? Other than that, awesome looking car. Great job. Quote
steph77 Posted July 2, 2016 Author Posted July 2, 2016 the weel hub is secured by a 3L pin with no friction place by the exterior of the H-frame on the top. on e lower part the hub is inserted with a single no-friction pin. The lack in the pièces is suffisant to place it without any exeeding force :) Quote
