First MOC Project idea and need some input!

Hey guys,

Found this forum today and been a huge lego fan since forever.

And bought a couple of trainsets and have ordered several lego bricks to make my first MOC train set.

Now is the hard part to actually wait for the pieces to arrive so i can actually build my MOC hehe...

So when i found the forum and i saw your contest that sparked an idea for me about making buildings from my town (Stavanger Norway).

And gave me something to do and spend time with my hobby will i wait for my bricks.

There lies my need for some input and feedback since i am really a noob with MOC´s :)

What can i expect to spend on a building?

Cause just started with a basic building from Old city in Stavanger (white basic houses from 1880 something) in LDD,

and then uploaded at bricklink to check what possible price would be.

And the price ended up over 2000 NOK (200 euro) and i found that expensive.

Then i went back and edited and got the cost down.

But still expensive tho.

Cause money is no issue when it comes to my hobby.

And the bigger buildings i plan on doing will cost money and i fine with that.

But smaller buildings that just to be a part of the city i was hoping to build atleast alittle cheaper.

Guess one of my biggest issues is not knowing what bricks are common still and what is are rare pieces!

So any place i can refence too before starting to build to know if an item is common or rare easily without uploading to Bricklink?

So any help with ideas and suggestions and advice is most welcome :)

I know this isn't much help, but the cost really depends on what you want. You could go all out and put the maximum amount of details in to it and it be huge, but the cost would really show. Or you could do what I do and focus on smaller buildings where I put the maximum amount of character I can into them, and feel really rewarded by the end, without breaking the bank too much. Overall the choice is yours but when it comes to building the smaller houses don't be afraid to go all out.

Good to see you here, and welcome to the club.

Our (my wife and myself) experience is mainly with modulars.

Our average 32x32 MOC modular with nicely detailed interior cost between 200 and 350 Euros.

A 16x32 around 125 to 200.

Like CaptainJackBrickster said above, it depends largely on your preference, the commonness of parts used and the models.

As a rule of thumb for a modular or city house (based on our empirical data of around 20 MOC modulars): roughly around 0.08 Euros per part (only new parts, bought through Bricklink in The Netherlands, exclusively from Dutch shops). Quite a bit cheaper if you are willing to buy used parts.

It might be different in your country, but hopefully this gives you a bit of an idea.

new bricks are best only price is problem.

i started my town with only used , and i try to buy them on local advertising sites, as people sell they lego on KG -when children stop play with them( got some good sets for 10 % of original price ) . you get many good parts and some you dont need now , you can sell and pay for what you need. I now my wife will kill me if i spend my paycheck on lego. And with buy and sell i get my town to be so big, now i try to get better (new ) parts and to get more detailed interior and exteriors. only it take time.

My number one suggestion to you would be to check out Brikkelauget, the Norwegian LEGO User Group - www.brikkelauget.no - where you'll get answers from Norwegians. Which might be more practical, especially when it comes to shipping costs and sourcing parts.
