Catnip replaced the bandana.

"That is also why I cannot enter the secret passage like the others did. It leads to the Temple of the Mother in the middle of this town. The Revered Sister has sealed the temple with wards that prevent demons from entering. That is the only reason why the people inside are still alive, and I do not wish to put them at risk. I may be throwing my life away, but the demons haven't harmed me yet because killing me would mean killing one of their kind. If you have a better idea about what I should do, Mr. Gibbin, I'm willing to listen."

Byblos shook his head in amazement.

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg

"You have lived with a demon symbiont for years?! That is remarkable!"

heroicanpc-catnip.jpg

"My every day is a constant struggle. Semyaza will win eventually, it is just a matter of time. But I'm a fighter spirit."

Atramor scratched his head.

"Sure as hell explains why ya' want his head."

"Agreed; lets take the child to the temple, then figure out our next move,"

"We don't all need to go to the temple. Can't take that long to drop off one kid. Besides, what if they come to check on us and find the door hangin' wide open? Catnip's left holdin' the bag and she ain't even armed at the moment."

"But if Solomon knows everything Catnip knows it won't matter if we leave someone here or not, and assuming Catnip is right about the demons not wanting to kill one of their own it would actually be better if she's left here alone. So I say we all go to the temple, and then we can come back for Catnip later if possible."

"Can't argue with that logic," I mumble.

I want to say something about not trusting Catnip, being demonic, but I don't feel entirely comfortable doing it with Namyrra in the party.

I wonder if they'll ever forget that.

"Very well, I will wait here for you to get back. Then we will show those demons the way out together."

One by one the heroes then entered the hatchet on the floor. It let to a cramped and dark tunnel that went on for half a mile before ending on another hatchet. Opening it resulted in a chorus of terrified and angry screams from above. The people inside the temple huddled together, clutching their makeshift weapons. An exotic-looking priestess stepped forward, with a blazing staff in hand.

"Calm down, everyone! The barrier is still up, so these people cannot be demons." The Sister of Danab eyed at Hybros suspiciously. "Although one of them does look the part. Why are you here, strangers?"

"Greetings, my good people. Brothers and sisters, please, do not be alarmed by our presence. We are here to help you. In fact, we are here to rid this land of these vile demons that plague you. We have slain many already and rescued this child from their vile clutches. We beg you to please take the child and care for him as we fear that we will not be able to offer him/her the safety that you can here, as we have many more demons to hunt down and destroy. Please do keep our efforts in your prayers as I will keep your safety in mine."

Hybros grimaced. "We brought your child back, and as soon as you have taken it we will return to the castle to continue to fight demons. Please do not make us fight you as well." He nodded at the weapons.

The priestess took a glance at the baby that Byblos was carrying.

heroicaquest148-auntbriamarte.jpg
"That is the newborn son of Marquis Lowcraft! We thought the whole family had perished in the invasion, but something made the demons keep the infant alive. Perhaps it is impractical or even impossible of them to possess a baby... But yes, the baby will be taken care of by the townspeople from now on."

The priestess nodded to a woman with children of her own, and she came to take the baby from Byblos.

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg
"Bye then, Little George! Hope you grow up big and strong", Byblos said with a sigh.

heroicaquest148-infant.jpg
"Goo brlb!"

Hybros grimaced. "We brought your child back, and as soon as you have taken it we will return to the castle to continue to fight demons. Please do not make us fight you as well." He nodded at the weapons.

heroicaquest148-auntbriamarte.jpg
"Why would we do that? Look at these people - they are scared, hungry and exhausted. They have lost everything - their loved ones, their hometown, their livelihood. We have been hauled here for weeks, and we have run out of sustenance. We are in no condition to fight anybody. If you really are as powerful as you claim, you would be our only chance of escaping this temple alive. So before you return to the castle, please help us flee this town by fending off the demons that will surely come after us. I beg of you, on behalf of all citizens of Goetia!"

"We are from Heroica, you see."

heroicaquest148-auntbriamarte.jpg
"I figured as much. You may call me Aunt Briamarte. Last year I visited the eastern city of Salmanda for a conclave of the Sisters of Danab, and if it weren't for Heroica, we would've all been butchered by a rivalling cult. So I know of your braverism first-hand. That is why I plead for your aid."

What will the heroes respond?

Hybros nodded. "It would be the right thing to do. Besides, we may draw out our foes into attacking us. We may learn more about them or catch them off-guard." He gave one last look at the infant. Such a curious creature. He remembered inspecting Ellaria's own child when she brought it into the hall. He wondered where that child could be now. Hopefully not eaten by demons.

"Certainly, if our party leader agrees? Tell me, do you believe the marquis has been possessed against his will, or did he invite the demons on? Or still, rather, is the marquis we met merely an imposter?"

"I do not know a whole lot about demons, but I can tell you what happened a few weeks ago. A strange man arrived to the town, went to the castle and soon after, the sky was torn apart. Ephemeral beings started to emerge from the rift and assaulted people at random. I believe the demons needed a physical body to survive longer in our realm, for the assaulted people started to behave erratically and attacked others. That is when I cast the spell of warding around this temple and called all survivors here. Unfortunately my powers would not allow me to make the area wider, for the Mother's influence is strongest here inside the temple. The demons took many prisoners to feed on their suffering, but thanks to the secret passage you also found, we were able to save many of them from being consumed. But this is it - the whole population of Goetia that are still alive." Aunt Briamarte looked at the baby. "It is a wonder that the infant survived all these weeks, but maybe someone fed him enough to keep him alive. The demons must have ran out of sustenance since we rescued the prisoners, so this baby's cries was all they had."

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg

"Eh, sounds about right..." Byblos muttered. He looked both ashamed and a little insulted that his party mates had not consulted him as the demon expert.

"Agreed. Only makes sense. If ya' can get outside the city, your king's waitin' for ya," Atramor nodded at the priestess, or...'aunt'. She didn't seem quite as strict as the gypsies of the coven of Mama Yaya. But then this version of the goddess was a bit less...intense.

Atramor sighed and rolled his eyes at the metasimian. "Alright. Enlighten us, Byblos. Is it normal for demons to have to feed on this kinda stuff? Didn't know that; so Solomon would've had to have been takin' care of this kid for weeks?"

"Yes, it would indeed be the right thing to do, so assuming Master Emorith also agrees I think we can get going."

"I think I speak for all of us when I say we shouldn't be wastin' any time. Let's go stir up a demonic shitstorm."

"Thank you, on everyone's behalf. I will ask the people to gather their belongings and prepare for a quick escape. I pray that the casualties will be as low as possible, and to ensure that, I shall give my skills of a high cleric to aid you. It will mean that I have to give up holding the warding spell, so there will be no coming back to the temple if our plan is botched."

Atramor gulps down a Mead and inhales the last of his Smelling Salts.

"You heard the lady. Everyone drink up whatever ya need.

Hybros sips a Mulled Wine and nods to indicate that he is ready. "Lead the way, Aunt Briamarte. I am certain your powers will be most useful, both for healing and battling back these demons."

Just to confirm, if I were to equip the Medal of Glory and the Soul Link Chain with Atramor, Atramor would get triple XP too, correct? If he would, then I de-equip the Amulet and equip the Soul Link Chain and the Medal of Glory.

After hasty preparations, the people inside the temple were ready to make an attempt at fleeing the cursed town. With a heavy sigh, Aunt Briamarte took down the spell protecting the temple, and together with the heroes led the people outside. It didn't take long for the demons to appear from the side alleys. The civilians started to panic, but the heroes stepped in between them and the assaulters.

heroicaquest148-demonassault.jpg

Unfortunately, the heroes could see more demons emerging from the castle. It would take some time for them to join the fray, so the heroes would have to be quick to defeat their current foes or face the chance of becoming overwhelmed by a horde of demons.
