JoelTheLegoManiac Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Never knew why so many people hated it but I remember back in the day people thought it was gonna replace Bionicle, but I must admit the designs weren't so interesting. Quote
PenPlays Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Never knew why so many people hated it but I remember back in the day people thought it was gonna replace Bionicle, but I must admit the designs weren't so interesting. That may have been how Bionicle/constraction fans felt. But spending $15 on 10 pieces...that was the line's downfall. Not to mention that most of the aliens used were irrelevant to the current iteration of the show that was airing. Quote
GK733 Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 People generally view Ben10 itself as a childish and in some cases cringeworthy series. Accompany that with the sets being expensive, and the building system as really basic and lacking with customization options. This should give fuel for hatred alone, but just accompany that with the same mindset of people that say Hero Factory killed Bionicle. Quote
DraikNova Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Ben 10 didn't particularly annoy me. It came out at a time that most of the other sets had equally bad builds, the colors were interesting and I didn't particularly care about the story one way or another. Plus, some of the parts introduced are incredibly useful when building in LDD. Quote
BrickJagger Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Because the builds were absolutely awful. Very simplistic and boring, not to mention the fact that they were based off of a kid's show. I think the hate is justified. Quote
Bigger Fish Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 I actually really liked the sets. Basic, yes, but they had some very neat parts and said sets were 100% new parts. So that was pretty neat. But then again, I actually always really liked the alien design in Ben 10. Very unique and alien looking. Quote
Dorek Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 not to mention the fact that they were based off of a kid's show. Ignoring the relativity of quality when it comes to dismissing something as a "kid's show", what would you classify any TV or movie property based on BIONICLE as? Anyway, yeah, the simple builds were probably the big one. It's the sort of actual realization of fears/paranoia that people had/have for CCBS; extremely large, incompatible-with-other-LEGO pieces forming an overly basic action figure. Quote
CabooseBM Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Yeah, I think the almost Galidor-esque parts were the downfall of that toyline, they had a few neat parts like the feet and the hands and some cool colors, but everything else was pretty annoyingly one-note. Quote
Kalhiki Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 What everyone else said. Though I will admit, some of the parts look pretty neat. Still want to get my hands on that torso piece. Armpit balljoints seems like a neat and useful idea. Quote
Logan McOwen Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 The Ben 10 figures were ridiculously <insert that tiresome argument> in comparison to G1 Bionicle and arguable even the CCBS - not to the same extent as Galidor, but all the same. Very specialised parts with little-to-no customisability past the odd barb here and there. The torso frame was pretty cool though. Quote
WARHEAD Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 I dunno, I actually really liked the parts they came with. Sure they might have been a bit simple and stuff but that's what appeals to me about them, just like CCBS they can be used for a variety of characters and still look good on any of them. I've made a ton of things with the parts and can only wish I had more. Sadly, because they were kinda expensive and unpopular they're pretty rare on the aftermarket... Quote
Aanchir Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Yeah, I think the almost Galidor-esque parts were the downfall of that toyline, they had a few neat parts like the feet and the hands and some cool colors, but everything else was pretty annoyingly one-note. For me what made Galidor parts so extremely limited were their super-specialized textures and limited connection points. Some Ben 10 parts like the feet and upper legs had dreadfully few connection points, but others like the lower legs actually had more connection points than Bionicle parts of the same size. And texture-wise, it was a far cry from Galidor or even G1 Bionicle. Everything was very smooth, like classic LEGO, and in hindsight it's easy to see those smooth surfaces and 3.2mm pin holes as a forerunner to CCBS shells. I kind of wish I had more Ben 10 parts, even though in a lot of ways CCBS has evolved past them (more connection points, limb beams that can be chained endlessly, etc). I've seen many great uses of some of those parts in MOCs since the sets came out. Of course, there are several reasons I didn't pick up the sets at the time. They had a very poor price-per-piece, which is probably one of their biggest similarities with Galidor. I was still feeling burnt out on Bionicle (didn't even get into Hero Factory until 2011 when the promise of the CCBS compelled me to give it a try). And perhaps most importantly, I had no interest in the Ben 10 IP. Even if the sets had been phenomenal designs, that alone might've discouraged me from buying them. Quote
Chimaninja454 Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 Yes it is. I got Spidermonkey when it went on sale back in 2011. Awful designs, a few interesting pieces and good cartoon. I'd say prefer HF and BIONICLE for that. Quote
Anthony12901 Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Well, you didn't have much of a choice on what to make. Instead of "Body, bone, bone, shell, bone, shell, foot, technic, technic..." You've got "Body, arm, arm, foot, foot, hand, hand, head." Boring. Quote
