brickmeistro Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Hi, I am a brand new AFOL and have spent the past few weeks browsing for my initial sets. I have already gathered a few, but noticed that a lot of good sets were start with 8000 while others begin with 42000. Was there a time after which TLG switched from 8000 to 42000? Or was there a different reason for the 2 series of sets? And why didn't TLG just continue with 8000 on to 9000 and so on? Just curious Quote

Just curious A Lego system wide renumbering that happened in 2013 All Lego themes did the same went from a 4 digit set number to a 5 digit. http://brickset.com/article/4076/lego-switches-to-5-digit-numbering-scheme Quote
Blakbird Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Sounds like you need to read Technicopedia! The original Technic sets (beginning in 1977) were 88** for regular sets and 80** for universal sets. Starting in 1995 they changed to 82** for "Tech Play" aimed at younger builders and 84** for "Tech Build" and more advanced building. In later years they used exclusively either 82** or 84** without regard to complexity. In 2010 the 80* series returned but was now used for all models and not universal sets. 2012 was the first (and only) year to use 93** series. Since then, everything has been 42*** series. As you can see, there have been times when the numbers meant something, but for the most part the numbers are just numbers. Read reviews and browse databases to find what you like. Quote

Thanks Super Bee and thanks Blakbird for the explanation... it makes so much more sense now!! Quote
kolbjha Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 (edited) 2012 was the first (and only) year to use 93** series. Since then, everything has been 42*** series. Hope this is not considered as nitpicking, but we also have the 41999 4x4 Crawler Exclusive Edition released in 2013. But perhaps we should consider 41999 as part of the 42*** series. And I can strongly recommend Technicopedia, to me it has been a valuable source for Technic functionality, history, parts and sets! Edited March 22, 2016 by kolbjha Quote
roppie11 Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 (...) And I can strongly recommend Technicopedia, to me it has been a valuable source for Technic functionality, history, parts and sets! I absolutely agree with that it contains loads of useful information. but ehh, I don't want to be rude but (when) are you going to update your site? last update was july 12, 2015 and many sections of the technic fundamentals are still in work. ClassicTVMan1981X Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 (edited) I sort of lost touch with LEGO after they discontinued the TECHNIC (and BASIC) Universal Building Sets in 1994-95, when I was 13 years old. The last TECHNIC Universal line sets were: 8022 - starter set 8034 - deluxe set 8042 - Pneumatic set 8062 - deluxe with carrying case 8064 - electric set with 9V motor 8074 - with Flex System I did have the 8062 set as my 1994 Christmas present when it was brand new on the shelves. ~Ben Edited June 20, 2016 by ClassicTVMan1981X Quote
