We recently(a few moons ago) got that upside down 2x2 plate, but are there really any easy ways up building upside down?

I've seen folks use the older hinge plates, and those knock-off brands have those double side plates.

I know of a sneaky non glue non Lego way... A perler bead is just about the same size as a stud and a wee bit taller. Those fit pretty well into plates and bricks...

the simplest way to invert is with a 2x2 plat with bar, and a 2x2 (or 1x1) plate with clips and flip which ever side needs inverting. can also do this with the small mixel ball joints. these methods aren't as smooth as the old hinge parts you mentioned. but they are effective and parts are readily available. a third option is to build a SNOT structure out of sight and invert that way.

These old motor bricks are pretty good for various upside-down japes.

Four of them are used on my Brambley Aero to make the air intakes, and they allow a 6x8 plate to be placed upside-down to make everything gapless. The front and back also have upside-down plates, thanks to some more modern SNOT bricks like these.
