Scala Elements in a Non Scala MOC?

53 members have voted

  1. 1. Is the usage of scala elements in a non-scala MOC legal?

    • Of course! It is LEGO, isn't it?

    • No way! There is too big of a size difference!

    • It depends on the element! Duh!

It was doc sinister who said "I took one look at the wall thingy, baby and highchair and that put me right off." but no they dont have such a history, its irionic because Dr.S decided that scala elements shouldnt be used in mocs, yet he found an alternative use for a scala element in writing his post.

Hmmm...it would only be "ironic" if I had known what it was in the first place - in the opening post it was suggested it could be used as part of a building, Holodoc later said it was an "orange wall thingy" - so I merely picked up on that. No irony there I'm afraid.

For me personally ecerthing that has stud compabilty ANDhas the same quality as official LEO is OK with me. For example the brickforge stuff is perfectly fine by me ,but MEGA Bloks isn't. I would use those oxford bricks without issues if I ever find some

Yes, those Oxford Bricks are nice! When you said that I looked it up at Google and I found a topic at Bricklinks. Very nice 'copy' of LEGO, it looks high quality. They even have Oxford 'Duplo' Bricks =O I like those models, a nice police station at their website and such things.

But I use only LEGO bricks, i never used some other things. Maybe I order some animals and Dwarf thingys from Brickforge.

Any chance of a link?

Oh and thanks a lot Sinner, you've got me off on a rubber-band-holder MOC! So much for any free time I was going to have! :-D

Sly Owl asked for some a bit earlier in this thread.

Ah okie, tks for the heads up ;-) !! Since every thread turns into an off topic spamfest, its kind of hard to follow the rationale of some discussuions |-/

well actually, this is a very old subject in the world of Lego space. Some space freaks not only use parts from different brands, but also non-lego things. as a kid, i even tried to use plastic bottles of water as windows/hull for space ships... I don't care at all what people use, i don't care if it's lego or not, as long as it's creative, as long as the builder enjoyed building it... who cares if the studs don't say "lego"... adding parts from other lines, like duplo, scala, belville, or even non-lego parts, gives an extra challenge to any builder, it forces you to think outside the box, to go to territories most of us will never go... IMO, that should be encouraged, instead of asking questions like "is this allowed?" Who are you to tell me what i can or can't use? What makes you or Lego the authority to decide?

Well it's a fair argument, but my attitude always was that if you don't like the limitation of Lego (or even Lego and M$g^Bl&ks) then maybe you should be a kit basher. Adding a bit of plastic for a windscreen is one thing (RalphS on Brickshelf does this and I find it tolerable) but I think if you go any futher then it is not a Lego creation. I'm not saying that is a bad thing, as kit bashing is a skill in itself (just like modifying parts is), but IMHO it just isn't a Lego MOC any more.

EDIT: I was looking at pheds beautiful ship and it reminded me that I think string and paper/cloth sails are OK in my book as well. Will I think of any more in time? Am I really a kit-basher? Only time will tell!

Snefroe has an excellent point, but as Sinner pointed out, once you add a non-lego elements, it's not a 100% LEGO MOC.

But even I've used non-lego sails (black fabric) before. 8-| But if a piece exsists, and it'll work, why use anything else? Like RalphS's work. I really love his creations, but why not use a LEGO element for the cockpit? Like the snowspeeder cockpit or the naboo starfighter one? ;-)

well i never cared about my mocs being 100% lego... that only limits my creative input.... why should i allow that? because i can tell people it's 100% lego? why on earth would they care?

why not use a lego cockpit? why would you wanna limit yourself to only lego cockpits?

I think it's the "purist" thing kicking in - look at it this way, if you were building something from scratch out of wooden matchsticks, would you worry about using a plastic toothpick in there somewhere? There are modelmakers who would baulk at such an idea, they like the fact that they ONLY used matchsticks, I think a lot of LEGO builders are the same.

Why use Lego at all then? Kit bashing allows far more flexiblity, and it would be far cheaper. It's what the pros do afterall.

It's just my opinon. I am a purist, you know! :-P

Again, you have a point, but I'm not gonna change my opinon because of it. ;-)

So we don't agree, big deal! :-D

there you go Sinner, basically me and Snefroe were on the same wavelength. However I disagree with his point, that using non-lego elements is more challenging, as part of the fun is realizing what a limited selection of (lego) elements can do. However lately I've been encouraged to use a bit of an unorthodox technique myself to get plates and other elements back to back (no I wont reveal it atleast until I've posted an moc using the technique). So really it's that whole notion of discretion again. It would be my choice to use these "things" :-D in an moc and if the community doesnt like it theyll let me know.

BTW I already used a piece of fabric in a dirigible moc and many people didnt like it, but i'm still probably going to use the same technique if I build another one.

H'okay.

I'm all for using Scala parts in MOCs, as long as they don't look to out of place or anything, for example when I saw that counter piece at the beginning, I could see it as a decorative roof thing for a building. But if you dressed a minifig in Scala clothes, well that would just look weird now wouldn't it?

I an speak only for myself but... I really don't like using big elements like scala or bionicle in system mocs.

Because, well.. I don't even like it in the official sets. It is too confusing for me to see bionicle parts in my exoforce robots! I changed them and sometimes I am not interested in new mechs cause of the bionicle parts..

it is just me, I know.. but I am oldfashioned and grew up with 80s lego, my minifigs shouldn't be scared 8-
