Corvus Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 The gallery isn't viewable yet, but I'll wait. *y* Good to meet the builder, and welcome to EB! *sweet* Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted October 15, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted October 15, 2007 How goes it? I'm the builder of the Titanic. Thanks for joining our discussion!! I have some questions for you... How does one start a project of this size? Did you do a lot of research? And how long have you been working on this ship? Would that be you in this picture? One last question, do you like Sinner? X-D :-D Quote
Titanic builder Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Thank you for inviting me here I have spent around 6 months at about 6 hours a day. I got the specs off the internet so the ship was 882 feet long and about 98 feet wide so I made it 882 studs by 98 studs so it's minifig scale. I have the specs for each lifeboat but as you can tell I'm not there yet. Finances are a bit tite so I have to slow my production. I also have a lot of books and info on it. I think I know way more about the ship then I ever wanted too. Yes that is me in the picture. The docs say I have a bit of a weight problam. It seems to accumulate around my stomach. Actually I have stomach implants so I have to tell the women that I'm up here and get them to stop looking at my belly. heh I agree with sinner in that the sides are very plain. I think that's the beauty of the ship, it was a plain looking ship. but If you look at the rear of the ship. That part I am very proud of. It took me 20 to 30 hours just to do that. Oh yes, a side note. The portholes have nothing behind them cause I am going to put 4 LED lanterns in the ship so the light blairs out the portholes. I think that will take away from the dullness of the slab. I also feel that when I get to the finishing of it the detail will shine out and counter the dullness of the lower part of the ship. Quote
TheFrisian Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 I'd love to see pictures of the finished model, especially with the lights on! *sweet* May I ask what you intend to do with it when it's finished? Sinner did kinda have a point that you'll have quite a job keeping it dust-free.. Quote
Hinckley Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 How goes it? I'm the builder of the Titanic. Thank you so much for your comments, they mean a lot to me, good or bad. Here are the answers to your questions the best that I can do.[snip] I live in Washington state and the ship was shown at the NW brick con last week. I made some minitures of this ship and stuck them in other displays seeing that things started to appear on my ship. I can answer more questions and again I thank you for you intrest, it means the world to me Wow! 8- Quote
Titanic builder Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 I use sheets to cover it and a handy can of air to spray the stuff off oops, forgot the 2nd question. I really want to sell it but I will see when I'm done. I know it will stay assembled for at least 2 more years. The sorting will be hell when I take it appart. Quote
tedbeard Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 ... I have 17,000+ reddish brown 1 x 4 tile in it so far so I'm happy there is a LEGO store with a Pick-a-Brick wall 10 minutes from me. Thanks for the heads up at the event BTW. I scooped up several handfuls of those into my PaB bin on Friday night. Decking ON! It was nice talking with you at BrickCon and I look forward to seeing it completed next year? *sweet* The reactions from the public were amazement and delight as Titanic was basically the first thing they saw when they entered the exhibition. "Omicron Weekend" may have won Best in Show but Titanic is what people will be talking about until next year. Quote
Titanic builder Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 on a side note, I want to purchase the history channels sho called Titanc: Achillies Heal then play it on 2 TVs above my ship. Who knows Scott out - Rose, you will go on and live a great life, purchase many sets and build great MOCs. But Jack I don't understand Bionacle. You will rose, you will Quote
Dino_Bot Posted October 15, 2007 Author Posted October 15, 2007 Who cares about technique...it's big, it's accurate, it's minifig scale...it's a dream come true. A sailing dream! Quote
hewkii9 Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Oooh impressive. Where does one get such a large quantity of black? Also, where does one get that much spare time? Also, he clearly is adding a man in an exo-force suit with a viking face and a frown flat-top. Now that's historically accurate! Well, if we're looking for historical accuracy, we might as well hang a slightly smashed-in TARDIS on the bow. -hewkii9- Quote
Titanic builder Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 I'm a stay at home dad so I would build during my sons nap time then in the evenings when the wife got home, plus weekends. My wife totally supports the project even though the last week I have been doubting my self highly. Part of me thinks I went a bit overboard with this. I am trying to use this ship as a resume to possibly get a job as a 3D model builder for engineering firms I got the bricks at www.bricklink.com Scott out - I should do the after affect of the sinking. Have a bunch of blue plate with half minifigs all over the place. Quote
Tanotrooper Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 (edited) very impressive and clean looking ship... ah the memories, trying to make a titanic and put it in my pool... the water coming in through the spaces... the memories... *sweet* the greatest thing is that its minifig scale! I was thinking, this model "sinking"... would almost be impossible I guess because of the weight of that ship (how much does it weigh now?) I'm looking forward to my favorite part: the tubes TT We want Romans! P.S. welcome on EB! Edited October 15, 2007 by Tanotrooper Quote

Titanic builder Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Well the ship breaks into 3 sections around 7'6". The front is the lightest and I think that's aroun 200 lbs and the other 2 sections I say are around 300 each. It took 6 people to carry the rear section. The rear was the hardest to build because of the massive overhang of the rear deck. I figure that there is a row every 4 studs of 1 x 16 blue brick 4 bricks high then 2 layers of plate over it. Again those are thanks to the Pick-A-Brick wall. I think I have about 1,000 of those in the ship. there is a row of 2 x black brick then the next 4 rows up are 1 x on the outside and random colors of 1 x on the inside. Some of the pics up may show that if not they are archived. The cross beams of non stud technic beams in a X form conectin one cross beam to another row of cross beams. This methed in my mind keeps the sides from bowing out plus any preasure pushing down is also stoped when they pull together by the weight. Scott out - A little birdie told me in a soft soft voice there may be a 1 x 3 tile in my future but who knows Quote
doug7172 Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 (edited) Hey imperial shadows I just relized that my contest is on your signature :-D . Any way why would you want a lego titanic with no interiar and no swoshibility 8-| but still kinda cool Edited October 16, 2007 by doug7172 Quote
Nyundi Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 I think this is amazing; plainness of the bottom aside, it's true to form, and really massive (which makes it an amazing feat)!! Great work, can't wait to see the final product! Maybe these people will purchase it! ;-) Quote
Siegfried Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 How goes it? I'm the builder of the Titanic. Thanks very much for joining! *sweet* First of all, please note that I did say in my first post that I thought it looked beautiful! :-D I am always stunned when a model like this surfaces and I am left wondering "why"! Thanks for answering that question for the most part. The one answer I couldn't find was the answer of; "Why Titanic?". From what I know (and you will probably know better!), when the Titanic was made the goal was to make a ship that looked impressive, and they even gave it a fake funnel for effect/appearance. But Titanic would have been a forgotten ship had it not been for the disaster. The fact that many don't know that it had two sister ships, Olympic and Britannic, and that Olympic served for many years without major problems highlights this. As you say yourself "it was a plain looking ship", probably because of its age and that it was made with rivets and not welded, and thus was squareish for the most part. Personally, if I was going to make a model of an authentic large ship I would choose a more interesting looking one, like the QE2 or the SS United States. So... is there a particualar reason why you chose Titanic? Is it because it is so well known? No, this isn't my style and I think I have made that clear already, but what I like to build probably isn't your style either. :-P The fact that Lego can be used for so many different interests is one of the greatest aspects of Lego. If you keep going the way you are it will be stunning and I hope you complete it. The stern has been done very well, and I like how you haven't just made a waterline model. I think you are right that once the top it will look far more interesting. I also think there would be a good chance that someone would buy this. There are a lot to Titanic fans out there and large models like this have sold before on eBay, although shippping would be astronomical! :-P It would be a shame for this to just "fall" in the sorting bin once complete. It would make a great bit of lobby art for a hotel.... One last question, do you like Sinner? X-D :-D Hey! You're trying to cause trouble! :'-( Feel free to give the walrus a big wedgie for his comments. He is long overdue for one, anyway. :-/ I did drop a tugboat on my head! 8- Quote
Starwars4J Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Oh! Is that what you think eh? That isn't what you said about Impartial! ;-) Hey I also said I love the Impartial :'-( Space ships usually call for more angles though, as they do tend to enter the atmosphere also (the Titanic never had to worry about wind resistence), so that point i-why am I talking about this? *wacko* Quote

Titanic builder Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Honesty I don't know why I did this. It really just popped into my head. I looked at my wife and said "I want to build the Titanic." She just looked at me and lowered her head. so then I started the research. I found all the specs on the ship and each lifeboat. The started in the middle of the midle section with one red plate on top of another. I posted the 1st pics on brickshelf when I had the hull of the middle section done and I think it got 5,000 hits in the 1st 3 days and e-mails from all over the world. That was the 1st clue that made me think I was onto something. I took no offence to what you or others have said. after this I want to do excisting architectural reconstruction in minfig scale. Quote

For years I wanted to join the air force, but never the Navy. *wacko* I say roll with it! :-P Quote
