Dino_Bot Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 I'm not sure this is the right place to put this thread, but History it is, so... The Titanic Gallery Someone's trying to do a minifig scale Titanic. But like...real scale. As if it were real, but for minifigs. Cool eh? Edit Bonaparte: Added pictures to post. Quote
Siegfried Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Call me a negative nancy if you like, but aside from the vast number of pieces involved, what is so impressive about this? Like the Harry S. Truman Carrier there are no remarkable techniques involved in the construction, nor does it require much imagination... or is this just my jealousy speaking? :-P I wonder what possesses someone to spend so much money to make something like this. *wacko* What would you do with it afterwoods? 8- Quote

I suppose you're right, but does it need to have remarkable techniques? A lot of the large models in Legoland don't appear to have a lot of technique involved. I think this will look a lot better after the detail is put in, just like the Legoland models. ;-) Sinner said: What would you do with it afterwoods? Brag? :-P I don't know where he'd put it, but... I think the problem is more the subject choice. The Titanic (and aircraft carriers) are not very interesting due to slab sides. There is a guy doing Yamato... ...which I find impressive due to the high level of detail required. (Most WWII Japanese ships had insane looking superstructure.) Shadows Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 In a similar vein, there was discussion elsewhere about what LEGO would do to top the UCS Falcon, and honestly, I hope they don't. I really don't want another oversized ship that I don't have the room or current inclination to attempt to display. I'd be much happier with 10 detailed system scale ships with new minifigs, but I know we get what we get and there is no point fighting it. I didn't want to miss out on it, but I don't want the moneymaking scheme that is $500 sets to get out of hand. It's a good one-time thing and that's that. These mega models people put together impress me initially, but I can't imagine trying to deal with owning one. Taking it apart? Insane. Keeping it together, covered in dust? Just as bad. Some of them feel like they belong in a glass case in a LEGO museum somewhere. An item of curiousity, but not one to own personally. That said, the same rules apply as with small mocs. Do something interesting and do it well. Sinner is dead on with this one. Often, the bigger ones try to make up for a lack of interesting technique with size, but it's just the same parts repeating over and over. Spending massive amounts on something like that doesn't impress me. I tend to excuse pirate ships though. I could see a large one on a mantle, and that makes it at least reasonable to me. Quote

Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted October 15, 2007 Eurobricks Emperor Posted October 15, 2007 Starting a project like this is one thing, but finishing it... But building something like this seems a bit boring to me. I hope he/she is enjoying it. There is an email address in the BS folders, so we could email the creator(s) and ask them to join the discussion. Quote

Asuka Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 I have to say that the finished Titanic looks for sure impressive and very sleek. *y* Now all it needs is a really huge icecube tray.... 8-| Quote
TheFrisian Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 The builder may not have used very sophisticated techniques, but the immense scale of it makes this model impressive in its own right. And overall, the ship does look very sleek. Still, I kind of agree with Sinner that a LEGO creation does not have to be big to impressive. Personally, I really enjoy microscaled creations. The ingenius building techniques used to create microscaled models really show the skill and imagination involved! Quote
Starwars4J Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 People mainly use "advanced techniques" for unusual shapes and whatnot, and the titanic doesn't have any truly unusual shapes. Honestly if it were me building it I wouldn't know where to throw in SNOT unless I was really forcing it and using it in places it didn't have to be. Quote
Titanic builder Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 How goes it? I'm the builder of the Titanic. Thank you so much for your comments, they mean a lot to me, good or bad. Here are the answers to your questions the best that I can do. I don't know what possesed me to build such a huge project. sometimes as of late I feel I'm wasting my time building this but I press on. I think I've passed the point of no return a few months ago in the building. The finances into this were partially brought to me by a lady who hit my stopped car going 70 mph. I'm a stay at home dad with a lot of time on my hands and really unemployable but that is a huge story in itself. I have a studio that this ship fits into with just a few inches on each end so to work on either side I have to go under it. The pictures that Are on the site haven't been updated for a while and for this I appologize. I'm about 80% done with the ship and just showed it last week. For the longest time this ship just looked plain to me but the detail I'm putting in now is making it take shape. I have 17,000+ reddish brown 1 x 4 tile in it so far so I'm happy there is a LEGO store with a Pick-a-Brick wall 10 minutes from me. Roughly 200,000 pieces so for into it. I know there are some mistakes but I am taking some artistic freedom with it. Here are some pics that are updated as of last week. I just posted them so it may take a bit before they are viewable. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=240117 I live in Washington state and the ship was shown at the NW brick con last week. I made some minitures of this ship and stuck them in other displays seeing that things started to appear on my ship. I can answer more questions and again I thank you for you intrest, it means the world to me Quote
