Does anyone have an idea of what this motor block is? I own this block and have been unable to find out what it does. Anyone know what it does? I want to try to use it, if it is useful. Any ideas? A picture of it I found is below in the bottom left corner.

It is the clear blue and grey one. Is it a mindstorms brick? Can I program it? Do I just need to find the cord?

P.S. I found this at my cottage (my older cousin owned this) so I am not exactly clear on what this does.

Thanks for the answers.

Yes it is programmable, you can use BricxCC/NQC to program it (you will need a special serial cable for this). See for exemple my GBC module based on it:

I remember Spybotics being released when I was a kid. I think Mindstorms 1.0 was already on the market before Spybotics was released. If I remember right, Spybotics was integrated with a digital game, and the programming was a lot simpler than Mindstorms. I never played with one, but I remember them being featured in the Lego Catalog and Lego Mania Magazine back in the day.

I have the big beige one, with the big green/red button..

it's pretty cool - you can 'record' the movements of the drive motors.. and then play it back, once/repeat/loop

quite an interesting creator set, it came from...

It is programmable but you will need a computer with a true rs-232 serial port and the special cable. I have read that it is possible to get a USB to serial adapter but this was not without lots of trial and error and not reliable.

Phew ... I am thrilled ...

That photograph is breathtaking ... LEGO programmable brick (PBrick) history, right there.

As Philo and others said: Yes the Spybotic is programmable and it is - in essence - a very powerful PBrick too. The thing is that it does not have any accessible outputs other than the built-in motors, and there is only one mechanical (the built-in touch) sensor. The built-in light sensor(s) are the key thing in this PBrick; as they allow very simple interaction with other Spybotics bricks as well as some sort of orientation sensing. They do speak the same language as the RCX 1.0/1.5/2.0 PBricks (the yellow one in the top row), which is even more exciting. Keep them ... and mostly the top left red one - the prototype MIT/LEGO collaboration brick ...

Regards,

Thorsten

1) USB is serial by definition, 2) old Dell laptops generally have it, but it's probably not worth it because you will be stuck with a craptop :P
