So I have this soft spot for Unimog (and G class) chassis and wanted to buy the 8110 set but it's obviously expensive since I'm late to the game.

I was wondering whether the 8110 set has an accurate representation of the Unimog principle (portal axles & torque tube suspension & gear reduction & actual 4WD). I'm sure it won't have diff locks, right? Since I'm really just after a bare bone chassis as often observed in the Alps (and I don't care that much for pneumatics) I was thinking of just building the chassis per the Lego instructions... provided it's an actual good & accurate chassis.

So my question is, does it make sense to try to rebuild the 8110 chassis (and maybe buy the parts for say booklet 1), or are there better MOCs out there, that I can base myself of? Like I said, I'm just a sucker for that simple yet ingenious engineering of the original Unimog chassis. Any help or pointers are most appreciated.

Well, one way I guess is to buy spare parts and use the instructions...then having a frame/cabin you can always use it as you want!

It does have differentials, actually 3....both axles and middle one! It has reductions on the hubs, 4WD, and great suspensions. It's one of those sets that cost a fortune, but in my opinion it's always worth it!!!

What sort of price are you looking to spend maximum?

With apologies in advance for my skill at being an idiot, isn't Trango after differential locks rather than the standard Technic differential? I've not built the Unimog set myself, though, so I may be misunderstanding what's included in the Unimog!

You can build a Technic differential lock, of course... but does the Unimog set inlude these?

Sariel's Technic differential lock diagram below (and his article on it is here).

Hi Trango,

hm, I like them, too ;) Own about eight Unimogs and two G's in Lego ;)

Regarding the chassis of the 8110 it's OK for a start but it dosen't really resembles the original Chassis. Efferman and I build a chassis for the U4000/5000 oder for the old 416 which is nearly accurate to the original Unimog chassis...
