I was looking for a way to use up some technic pieces and panels and ended up building an elevator. I then decided to build a modular building around it. I'm in the middle of the build and I'm looking for a bit of advice from anyone willing to give it. I know this thread tends to be about the official modulars, but I think I might get more help here than if I start a new thread.

Is this too tall and too tan?

^ tkatt, how you doing? You know you were an inspiration to me about a year or so ago with a build of yours. Anyway, that inspiration was partly cause for a new project, but I have yet to photograph/ reveal it yet, but I wanted to thank you. In the near future, I'll throw some pics up and give you a nod.

But, on track, as much as I love monochrome, even in tan, it does need a contrast/ compliment of something in there. What, where - not sure...

And, I really don't think it was too great of an idea to sort of hijack this thread this way. Ya, its just one post, but those replies to your question may take us all far away from the initial purpose/ focus of this thread. You need a new topic, if only for this question, which I'm sure many of will want to ask:

Elevator? How does it work? And OK, my first concern - for an elevator, one is obviously going to want to see it work. Do the figs go in through the front entrance? Can you see on as they ascend through the windows? And more importantly - where do they come out?

maybe just change the colour of the tiles on the sides, I understand why you wouldn't want to change the windows because of the arch part so keep that its a nice affect. I am also intrigued to see more of the building and the lift.

As for the height, well it makes having a lift in it more worthwhile :sweet:

Notaromantic, whoops, I guess I should have thought about that post a bit more. Now I have a work in progress thread I didn't expect. Someday I'll learn not to internet long after I should have been in bed...

Yes, the elevator works but it could use a bit of refining. When you turn the crank one axle lifts the car while the other lowers the counterweight. I used all the random panels I had to build the shaft. I don't own many tecinic sets, but somehow I have a lot of technic pieces. I've tried to find ways to use them up, so most of the gears are just for show. I haven't figured out how I want the doors yet- sliding doors would be nice, but I'll probably go with standard 4x6 doors.

The first picture links to a video. I apologize for the video.

Wether it is to tall depends on what stands next to it! Given the width, I would personally lower it by one floor. The building could use a bit of dark tan. Perhaps chang the tiles on the side of the building to dark tan?

I felt that adding dark tan was a good idea- but I didn't have many dark tan tiles. I did have a lot of dark tan plates though. I've used them behind the tiles to add some contrast.

I've also changed the ground level front and added some interiors. I'm not finished, I still have a bit of interior work and a few gaps here and there to fill in, but I never really most of my projects. I like leaving myself something to go back to. Anyway here are a few pictures of the updates.

Necessity be the mother of invention - 'tis true.

I never seem to have enough bricks around to do things the way I'd like, as I only really ever order what I plan to use in whatever the next step of my work may be. But sometimes, an idea just refuses to wait, so I'll too use what I have in order to accomplish something, and the result is usually that I'm surprised by the result I did not expect.

I like the effect of the Dark Tan plates behind the Tan tiles, and it seems like one of things - that someone would not consciously do when building - and as you've admitted, it was because you used whatever you had. It looks good, a new technique born. I'm going to want to try it.

And the black in the awning = nice. Perhaps adding some more hints of black, here and there, would tie it all together.
