AOW Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Hello all. I have just recently bought 4 sets for approximately 20€ on polish equivalent of Ebay. I knew that all the sets were incomplete. There where: 8829 (94%), 8252 (93%), 8235 (96%) and the reason that I got auction the 8858 in about 97-8% completed. A quick look when I got them and in my opinion on 8858 there are missing few half brushes one shock absorber and son other small parts (doind the inventory). The set has been turn a part and that I noticed was the fact that most likely it was never dismounted since some one has build it when it was new. I could not separate some parts (plates and bricks) and especially black plates have nice quantity of dust, while the space that was under lets sag brick is brand new. Wheels rims are yellow... :( rather than white... So I came with idea that I will rebuild it completely. I have already started with rims and tires. Next will be full inventory. I put pictures of this "resurrection" and continue this post as a kind of a blog. Once I return from holidays I will add new news. Regards Quote
zux Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Hi, please keep in mind there two slightly different inventories for this set if you check on BL. The copy I have is an earlier version, which is featured on a box and building instructions, but later version was changed and didn't get pictures updated! The copy I bought didn't even need a cleaning it was excellent condition. Good luck with resurrection! Quote
AOW Posted November 4, 2015 Author Posted November 4, 2015 zux - which is the key difference between earlier and later model set? I wonder which one I have. Regards Quote
Richard Dower Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 i would swap out as many of the parts as possible for brand new ones...taking note of any mold updates that might have taken place. Quote
zux Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 zux - which is the key difference between earlier and later model set? I wonder which one I have.Regards The first difference is in instruction number found on cover page's left bottom corner. My copy, which is for earlier model has 877166. Instructions available across the web are for later version. The actual differences are in the rear suspension (difference is already visible on 1st page), where 2*2 plates are used and there's no space between 2 stud and 10 stud Technic bricks. Earlier version has 2*3 plate and a space between two mentioned Technic bricks. The are some other small changes in the rest of rear suspension setup. Next, clearly visible difference is in how Red Plate 1 x 6 with Toothed Ends is being attached. Earlier version uses 4 half pins - this is visible on the box and building instructions, while later version uses 4 axle pins and 4 bushes. As a matter of this changes, inventory for two versions differ slightly. You can check for exact pieces on BL inventory. I have spent some time with BL catalog admin to sort this question, as previous submissions were incorrect and confusing. Pieces for later version are listed as Alternate Items. Quote
AOW Posted November 6, 2015 Author Posted November 6, 2015 Ok. Then I have the newer version or some kind of mixed. I need to check again the rear suspension. Thank you. Regards Quote
AOW Posted November 23, 2015 Author Posted November 23, 2015 Hello again The “Resurrection” has begun. The set as I got it was turn a part and mixed within in other sets that I acquired and shipped in a plastic bag. I took the part that I believed were from the 8858 original set and started to clean them. As you may see they were pretty “cleaned” J Once all the parts landed in to box for cleaning I started to “wash” rims with objective to return their white color, you may notice how yellow they become. Then I worked on tires them self. I have used a real tire cleaner and results are immediately visible (rubber is a rubber). All the pieces are clean and dry, so I started to count them – this is still in progress due to lack of time I will keep this post updated with more pictures and progresses Gallery: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=560356 Regards Quote
zweihander Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Nice, I'll be keeping a close eye on your progress. I have a %70 complete 8880 on my hands and I'm trying to gather the missing pieces. After that, I'll start the restoration like you did. What did you use to whiten the rims? I read on a number of sources that %3 hydrogen peroxide with sunlight exposure works very well, but haven't tried it yet. Quote
AOW Posted November 23, 2015 Author Posted November 23, 2015 erelender I used that %3 hydrogen peroxide :) , so far rims have been taking bath for aprox. 4 weeks :) Still yellow :) Quote
SevenStuds Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 erelender I used that %3 hydrogen peroxide :) , so far rims have been taking bath for aprox. 4 weeks :) Still yellow :) Strange that it didn't work for you. I used 3% on all my yellowed parts from the 80's and it whitened everything in less than 1 day. I did do it in summer with small batches each time, and only on very sunny days. Perhaps the UV level was too low in your case. I wonder if a UV lamp would help you since it's winter now. Quote
AOW Posted November 23, 2015 Author Posted November 23, 2015 SevenStuds I think that I used portion of less than 3%... will check them today and see results. Thanks Quote
JohnBS Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 erelender I used that %3 hydrogen peroxide :) , so far rims have been taking bath for aprox. 4 weeks :) Still yellow :) @AOW I used 3% hydrogen peroxide on the yellowed "white" parts of 8880, with success - just washed them in the solution then rinsed in plain water an hour or so later and they came out as white as a sheet. Try a slightly stronger solution. John Quote
SevenStuds Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 SevenStuds I think that I used portion of less than 3%... will check them today and see results. Thanks My bottle says "10 volume". I think its a good amount as stronger concentrations might make the parts brittle. Quote
nychase Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 I have done this many times....there are two other ingredients you need. 1) you need oxyclean to add to the hydrogen peroxide (just a small teaspoon full) to jump start the process. I used low % peroxide and never had a problem. 2) You need UV light. I suggest sunlight if available or I personally built a box lined with foil with two blacklights at the top. Took up to a week but worked wonders. Quote
AOW Posted November 23, 2015 Author Posted November 23, 2015 OK I know what I missed !!!!! It is UV light ! I seal it in closed dark box !!!! Quote
AOW Posted November 24, 2015 Author Posted November 24, 2015 (edited) The rims in "liguid" have been exposed to sun light - lets see then how it will work. In the mean time this is how the 8858 looked like when I was looking for it in auction : Now it is time to do the checkout of missing parts that I hope will not be many :) New updated will be provided shortly regards Edited November 24, 2015 by AOW Quote
RohanBeckett Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I've posted this before, but here's what an 2 hours in the Australian Sun, with 1 Tablespoon of 'Napisan Oxy Action' laundry powder in about 2ltrs of water can achieve. This one shows a baseplate deliberately left half in the solution - for around 30 minutes Quote

AOW Posted November 24, 2015 Author Posted November 24, 2015 RohanBackett - the issue is that here in Poland we do not get as that much sun as you in Australia :) :) but is does wonders Quote
zux Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Now it is time to do the checkout of missing parts that I hope will not be many :)It seems like your version is later one opposing to one I have, so I'd suggest using Alternate version posted on Bricklink. Quote
AOW Posted November 24, 2015 Author Posted November 24, 2015 Rims & Tires: Missing parts found and added : 10 x Light Gray Technic Bush 1/2 Toothed Type II 3 x Light Gray Technic, Axle and Pin Connector Toggle Joint Toothed 1 x Red Slope 45 2 x 1 3 x Black Technic, Axle 2 Pretty low count of missing parts ? Also there are no parts for the alternative model, but since I do not plan to build it then I do no worry. Quote
RohanBeckett Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Only Oxy Action, or Oxy Action + Hydrogen Peroxide? only oxy action and water... no HP used at all. I'm sure even in Poland, at the peak of summer, you'd get enough Sunlight/UV light to cause *some* reaction, and improvement... otherwise, as mentioned before, you might need to find a UV Lamp. Quote
AOW Posted November 25, 2015 Author Posted November 25, 2015 RohanBeckett - now here in Poland we have winter :) and there is actually pretty low volume of sun light :) But as I took those rims and expose to the daylight the results can be seen above few post up :) In general, the model has been finished and shortly I will make new pictures of it and post them here :) Thanks to all :) Quote
AOW Posted November 26, 2015 Author Posted November 26, 2015 Here are the few steps (pictures) while I was rebuilding it : It looks perfert to me and I am actually pretty happy for having it :) Quote
