Marmite Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Some pics of this finished would be great! Instructions look good though, thanks for sharing. I'm also modifying this set at the moment. I've pretty much replaced every part with a black item to get the colour scheme sorted. Having trouble with 4 plates that essentially act as hinges for the top of the main body of the ship (they are listed in the manual as 4646513). They dont seem to come in black (or at least not in any significant number on Bricklink) so I need to come up with an alternative to keep things black. Dont suppose anyone else has tackled this? I'm also trying to ensure the red parts at the front of the ship look right. Jangbricks seems to have nailed both of these elements but its really difficult to figure out what exactly he has done. Any info/thoughts on these would be massively welcome! Quote
Reputator Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I do have a couple pics I can show. A close-up of the mod with most of the pieces reattached: The finished ship: Quote

Marmite Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Thanks for the pics Reputator. How did you do the front red pieces? I've got some on there at the moment but can't seem to see an obvious way to eliminate a black plate under the top layer and also get the side pieces to line up. Quote
Reputator Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 If you do away with the bottom winglets (as most people do) that should free up a 4x6 plate that you can place on the face of the ship and build up the red windscreen on top of that. Quote
broomhandle Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I would like to see a pic of your red front as well. I was thinking of doing that to make it look more scale. Quote

Reputator Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Awesome! I'm glad you found a solution that works for you! I was actually very careful to make sure the L-beams did not interfere with the outer wing panels, but I'm sorry it caused issues for you! Quote
Ellisss_ Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Great mod! I'm surprised TLG didn't add this feature in the first place! Quote
rollermonkey Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I'm waiting to see a mod that permits a turning crank to deploy and retract the spreading wings together. :) Maybe the scale is too small to fit something like that in there? I haven't had time to even do the simplest version of this mod, though. Quote
geezerman402 Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 There miiiight be enough room. Crank on the back of main body, universal joints at hinge point of wings, leading up to worm gear for folding the wing tips in and out. And if it could be synced up with the wings folding open at the same time, I'll be really impressed! Quote
apoupada Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I do have a couple pics I can show. A close-up of the mod with most of the pieces reattached: The finished ship: What piece are you using to hold the top red-transparent pieces on the front part of the ship? Quote
Reputator Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 What piece are you using to hold the top red-transparent pieces on the front part of the ship? Just a 4x6 plate. There are already studs on the nose of the ship to put it on. Quote
Marmite Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I'm having a bit of a struggle trying to convert this set to all black. I'm basically done apart from the central roof element which lifts up at the front and back on a combination of four grey hinges (2 x 4 with 6 studs and 3 pin holes) that dont come in black! Can anybody help to suggest alternative ideas who may have already completed the colour changing process? Im stuck! Quote

Can anybody help to suggest alternative ideas who may have already completed the colour changing process? Im stuck! I've done the colour swap on mine and come to the same problem, those darned grey hinges. It was Jangbricks on youtube who inspired me to do the colour swap and on re-watching the video, i see he changed that hinge set up completely. Pause at 2:32 to see what I mean: The hinge is a 4213 plate, guessing the other part is 4315 but as the original roof had a front and rear opening sections, I suspect the rear is now none opening. Quote
Marmite Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Yeah I had a look at the Jangbricks video and bought both of those parts but I cant quite figure out how to bring everything together! Really hoping someone who has already cracked it can help out here. Quote

A close-up of the mod with most of the pieces reattached: The finished ship: Thanks for the info before, I was wondering if you could answer one more thing. In the top picture I see that on the right of Kylo's cabin you're still using the 1x4 piece with the slider, how were you able to put it back in? I followed your earlier instructions on how to set up the body and that piece is not in there, did you make further mods? Quote

That part is assembled exactly the same as the original build, per instructions. I just didn't show everything in my step-by-step for the sake of simplicity. Quote
apoupada Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 (edited) Ok, so if I'm understanding correctly, the piece in the blue circle (In the first picture), should NOT be placed where the yellow circle is as per the normal instructions? The reason I ask, is cause from the pic you uploaded it looks like it's there (2nd pic) Edited March 21, 2016 by apoupada Quote
BStahley Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Hi there, This is my first post to this board, so apologies if I do something wrong... it's completely unintentional! I just wanted to say say a HUGE THANK YOU for posting this step-by-step guide to this great mod. I ordered the pieces last week and just finished the mod last night. This is a fantastic mod and it is exactly what I was looking for when I came across this site and your post. The only thing I noticed—and it could very well be because I did something wrong—is that, by inserting the Technic axle into the third hole, you lose the blue Technic pin that was there in the original build. This seems to be an important piece, as it helps stabilize the piece that sits next to the rocket engine and keeps it from rotating too much. I couldn't figure out another place to stick that pin so that the piece wouldn't wobble, so I stuck a 1x4 plate on the end of it and that seemed to do the trick! Again, I may have simply misread the instructions. Anyways, thanks again! -B Quote

Sorry for the confusion! Yeah after the mod you won't be able to put it there. Hi there, This is my first post to this board, so apologies if I do something wrong... it's completely unintentional! Unfortunately the blue technic snap with stud does have to be removed, which does cause that piece to be a bit loose. But I'm glad you came up with your own solution to it! My mod is definitely not the ultimate in perfection by any means! Quote

Hoth Rebel Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Does anybody have a full list of every part that needs to be changed to black if you want to MOD it to a black version (like Jangbricks --> )? Or just use the brickset list and swap every gray piece for a black one? Quote

I just found it easier to go through all the pieces and getting them in black. Never used brickset list though Quote

Or just use the brickset list and swap every gray piece for a black one? If you're going to follow Reputator instructions and model, there's some parts you don't need. Mine is almost built, I'm just waiting for a few mores parts for my own mods, once i finish i could send you a list. I personally ordered all the parts in the set in black (where I could) but some are not needed. Quote
