aminnich Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Hey guys, i have idea for an automatic gearbox, with more than 2 gears. i have the entire idea thought out and kinda drawn out, but i am super bad at making the gearbox itself. So im wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction of a nice size gearbox (6 speed + if possible). If someone is interested in doing a build together, and they want to design a gearbox for this project, that would b cool too. Thanks guys Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 I suspect you would be best basing or using one of piterx's,splat's or sheepo's gearboxes. For heavy moc's I would use a orbital gearbox but those are not easy to make automatic compared to 'the standard gearbox'. Quote
Dafgek81 Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Jurgen Krooshoop had a very Nice gearbox in his American truck, it's RC. Quote
engineermax Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Check out sariel.pl for really cool technic stuff. Quote
aminnich Posted August 25, 2015 Author Posted August 25, 2015 i found sariel's 10 speed gear. I think i will use this, but i have to figure out how to build it from the pictures Quote
Saberwing40k Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 i found sariel's 10 speed gear. I think i will use this, but i have to figure out how to build it from the pictures I'm kind of wondering what you're going to use this for, and why you went away from the automatic gearbox. In my opinion, I can't really see any reason to have more than 4 speeds in a Lego model, and even if you wanted it, you'd be better off with a different design. In real life, any vehicle with a large number of gears does not have single large gearbox. What will be done instead is to have a small gearbox like a 6 speed, and then a splitter, a small, 3 speed gearbox. Basically, there will be 3 ranges, with 6 speeds each. But yeah, I think you should tell us more about what you need and want, and we'd be able to help you better. Quote
aminnich Posted August 26, 2015 Author Posted August 26, 2015 I have an idea for a continuous gear box. It will actually work like a transmission, slowly speeding up without having to stop. I want a larger gearbox to do this because for my design I need to of the same gearbox. A small gear would also work, I just wanted to do it this way. I made a simple protype today. It has a total of 20 gear settings. Now I want to put some wheels under it and see how well it works. By the way it is fully rc, but the problem is, is that it is huge..... Ill work on that Quote
Kristof Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Any picture of what are you actually doing would help understanding I guess. I personally am quite confused. Continuous variable transmission you talk about looks like this and has nothing much to do with classic technic gearboxes you mentioned before. Ultimately, I'm not even sure what your actual goal is :) Quote
MSc Shobaki Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 (edited) I have built a heavy-duty CVT transmission, which is fully mechanically automatic. Stepless shifting throughout the gears and drives. Too high resistance affecting the output shaft= Lower gear ratio. Even higher resistance= Lowest gear ratio. If no or small amount of resistance= Stay on high ratio It is currently being built into my upcoming model of a Smart Car, featuring realistic suspension with rear wheel drive, propelled by an inline-3 LPE. Btw, scale is approx. 1:8 Edited August 26, 2015 by MSc Shobaki Quote
aminnich Posted August 26, 2015 Author Posted August 26, 2015 I know its confusing without pictures, but i want to finish it before i show it to you. The idea is that the gearbox will keep the speed of the vehicle going and shift gears, this way the vehicle can go faster and faster without having to stop. What im building is nothing found in the real world, it is something im creating for the Brick world. Quote
Kristof Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 (edited) According to your first post/request, I thought you are far from even starting the build, not finishing :) Misunderstanding perhaps. Now as you describe the finctionality, it sounds like some replacement for clutch. This great seems to have similar attributes either - you might want to check it out. Anyway, looking forward to see your invention! Edited August 26, 2015 by krisandkris12 Quote
aminnich Posted August 26, 2015 Author Posted August 26, 2015 Haha lets just say I got carried away with building last night haha. It's almost done, still have somethings I want to do yet Quote
aminnich Posted August 26, 2015 Author Posted August 26, 2015 like every build i do, im running into problems. The whole setup id huge and couldnt be used in your average sized vehicle. Ill keep you guys posted on progress. I could try and post WIP pics if u want. Quote
