Hey everone,

A couple of weeks ago, I sold one of my short stories to an online fiction magazine called Afterburn Speculative Fiction. The story was published yesterday, and if you're interested in reading it, you can find it at www.afterburnsf.com . In the center of the page is the section for the new September issue. Beneath the "Fantasy" section, click on the link for the story called "The White Devils."

It's a fantasy adventure story, which I understand is not everyone's favorite genre. If you do read it, I'd love to hear what you think of it!

Thanks!

I agree with ZBD (can I call you that?). An enjoyable read, expertly contained in the short story form. I don't usually go for Fantasy stories, but this was a very good piece of work. Well done.

So... any more planned? X-D

Thanks, guys! I appreciate the feedback!

As for having more stories planned ... I've got about a dozen short stories finished that I currently have submitted to various different magazines. The rejections roll in, and I resend the story somewhere else. It's a long, tedious, discouraging process.

This particular story is only the second one I've ever sold. The first one I sold to an online magazine last summer. Alas, the very next month after it was published, the magazine went under and stopped publishing. At least I got paid though!

That's a bit of an anticlimax, isn't it?

At least I got paid though!

:-D And that makes it all okay!

I finally read it! *wub* It's so good, Joebot. I really ate it all up. Wonderful story and a wonderful world you created. I really liked the relationship between the two main characters. That made the story that much more engaging. I would love to read more from you and hope to see more publsihed works.

I enjoy your Unlikely Society already. You are certainly a great writer. Great job.

Just curious, how long did that take you-first to final draft? How many edits did you do?

Thanks for sharing! I thoroughly enjoyed it. *wub*

Hey, thanks! I hope to HAVE more published works! If you'd like, I could email you a PDF of a magazine that published my novella last year. As I mentioned above in this thread, the magazine is now defunct, but I still have the PDF file.

As for how long it took to write this story ... honestly, I can't really remember. I wrote this story a couple of years ago, and I tend to write really sporadically. I get on a hot streak, and will churn out some stuff, then I get lazy and don't do anything for a few weeks. I do remember that it went through at least three or four fairly hefty edits, then lots of tweaking and fiddling. I sometimes have trouble walking away from a story and calling it DONE.

On a related note ... there should be a new Unlikely Society chapter up TONIGHT!! Finally!!!

I just emailed you the PDF file. Thanks again, and I hope you like the story.

Yeah, writing takes real discipline, which I'm sadly lacking. My day job is a technical writer, so the last thing I want to do when I get home is sit down in front of the computer and write some more.

And yes, Chapter 7 is posted!!

Technical manuals and expository writing was my first college course in writing... :-X

Had a chance to read through it finally and enjoyed it tremendously. It had a timeless feel that is often lost in stories of this kind. It didn't try to put itself anywhere but where it naturally belonged, a difficult effect to master and incredibly well done here.

Without spoiling the ending ... nope, I can't find a way to say it without doing so.

Please be sure to shamelessly promote your future efforts as well, I'd appreciate reading them *y*
