Obi1by1 Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Hello all, Like a lot of AFOLs, I suspect, I was brought back to Lego after a long Dark Age because my son, who is now five, loves Lego. Buying him sets over the last year, I started to see the wonderful things that people are doing with Lego now that I couldn't have dreamed of thirty years ago. Sci-Fi and Modulars are my thing, especially after getting the Detective's Office a couple of weeks ago. What a great set! A fun and interesting build (and my son helped, of course), and on top of that hard-boiled detective fiction is what I do, so I loved it on lots of different levels. Now I have plans for some modular MOCs to go along with the feel and implied era of the Detective's Office - a Deli and a Hat shop (side by side, with apartments above) and then an old-style boxing club, I think. I'm looking forward to the adventure! My son's enjoying it too, needless to say. Quote

I know you may have other reasons for liking it, but trust me... you'll probably regret missing out on other modulars if you don't get them. Quote

I have my eye on the Parisian Restaurant, and while I'd love to get the Pet Shop, it's already quite a bit more expensive (at least here in the U.S.) than the others. I have started my own modular MOC, although it's going to be a lengthy build, as I'm at the stage in my AFOL life where I have to build up my Lego collection. Dark Bluish Gray tiles are high on the list things I need to get, and 1x by bricks in the colours I'm more likely to build in - the grays, dark tan, tan, and white. Bit by bit! Quote
fred67 Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I'm bricklinking a Market Street, and am surprised at how.... I don't know how to say this.... "not in abundance" the DBG 2x2 tiles were. It's not like they were rare, or difficult to find, but I would have thought they'd be a fairly abundant piece. Few sellers in N.A. had the quantity I needed. So, my story goes that I got back into LEGO with trains around 2001 or so, but it wasn't until maybe 2006 or 7 that I was inspired to make some big creations of my own. Long story short, back then I found a seller on BL who was selling white 1x2 bricks for 2.9 cents, and 1x1 for 1.9; black 1x2 for 3.9 and 1x1 for 2.9. I ended up order several thousand white 1x2, about a 1000 in black, and several hundreds of 1x1 in those colors. It was a huge leap forward in just being able to start building something big to have all those pieces in neutral colors. So my mini castles are white instead of gray... big deal! Gray costs too much (although I'm saving LBG up over time). Quote

There aren't many sellers with large quantities, and they're more expensive than 2x2 tiles in what I would consider less common colours - medium blue, for example. You're right in general in that bricks in grays seem to be more expensive than black or white, although I need less for modulars than I would for a castle. And as far as castles go, my son loves knights, so if there is a Castle release in 2016, I might well end up getting interested in Castle MOCs too! Quote
