Hi all,

First post, sorry if this is in the wrong place, it is technic part related so seemed the right place! I am rebuilding old lego and I have destroyed the 20 x 1 technic rack from the space police mission commander. Part 2428. The part is quite different in looks to the more modern technic racks, 3743.

Would it be possible to replace the missing part with 5 of part 3743, will they serve the same function?

Thanks in advance

I don't think that would work, but it is easier to ask it in "Technic", not in Train where you initially posted it!

B.t.w. it would help to also state the set number.

They are readily available in black: http://www.bricklink...D=81&colorID=11

They serve the same function ok, but that doesn't mean they they will be suitable. Crux is this part:

The 2428 fits inside (actually in two ways), but 2743 will not afaik.

Thank you! I am going to blame that on using my phone to post rather than a computer.

The original piece seemed to cost twice as much as 5 of the smaller which was why I asked the question.

I have not tried to use bricklink before. The prices seem much better there. I will look into it.

I do have the part it fits into and suspected that might be the problem but i don't have the newer piece to try and run through it.

I think such a classic set probably deserves a few quid for the replacement part.

Cheers!

Yes you can. If you take 4 of the short racks and stack them against each other, they're the same length as the long rack. Of course, you'd need to connect the 4 short racks to an 1×16 thin plate, and that'll make the assembly thicker.

Thank you drjb, the instructions call for them to be connected to a plate anyway. You think they will run through the mechanism in the same way as the older part? They appear the same to me other than the border alongside the teeth

No you cannot they won't fit.

JopieK is right. Having the same length is far from the same thing as fitting. The old racks have a groove on the side which slides in the part JopieK posted.

I used one of those racks in my 8285(couldn't find the 1x4 ones) and works fine, don't think you'll get any problems...

Using a long rack with grooves instead of a short one without grooves works, but that doesn't automatically means that it works the other way around as well...

I have no experience with this part, but looking at the counterpart, these grooves appear to be essential to the function, so my guess is that it won't work the other way around

I have managed to get hold of two of the newer 1 x 4 and tested them attached to a plate. Seems to work but I will need to build the whole set to confirm. Thanks for all the opinions, nice to know you can get help when you need it
