TheOneVeyronian Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 (edited) UPDATE: Real life version has been built, and instructions to build the dragon are now available! Original post: Well, I don't usually come into this subforum, with my speciality being in the Action Figures forum and all that (and I hardly ever work with System bricks), but today I come here to share a recent MOC I made with you in LDD. It's a (mostly) anatomically correct skeleton of a dragon made up of 628 pieces, which, being obsessed with dragons, was something I wanted to do for a while, but only recently had the time to do. The MOC took about 5-6 hours to build. Hopefully this is of the high standard of the MOC's I usually see in this forum! Anyway, enough of me talking, time to let my renderings do the talking: Comments and constructive feedback very much appreciated. Enjoy! Edited August 3, 2015 by TheOneVeyronian Quote
TuftedDuck Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Lovely build! What parts did you use for the spine? Quote
TheOneVeyronian Posted June 23, 2015 Author Posted June 23, 2015 (edited) Lovely build! What parts did you use for the spine? The spine is a flex cable, specifically this length which has some Technic 1/2 pins attached to this Technic connector block. Probably not the most stable setup in real life but it works a treat in LDD If anybody's interested in examining exactly how this skeleton goes together (trust me, it is all connected! No floating parts or illegal builds), here's the LDD file for your viewing pleasure. If you decide to have a go building it in real life (some colour substitutions will be required, making it black and grey would probably work), please give me credit for the design Edited June 23, 2015 by TheOneVeyronian Quote
Isundir Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 It's noice, would love to see a real life version. Quote
deraven Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Incredible! Would love to see how those flex tubes hold up under real gravity. Quote
TheOneVeyronian Posted June 23, 2015 Author Posted June 23, 2015 Thanks for all your nice comments! Alright... since it came up in quite a few comments on many of the sites I posted this on, who would like me to try and Bricklink this MOC and build it for real (will probably make a black version for a bit of variety, after all LEGO did mould their skeletal horses and skeleton minifigs in black so it can't be that odd ), and see if the MOC will hold? It'll probably take me months as I don't have a lot of money at the moment (plus this thing uses an insane amount of 1x1 round plates with holes so using BnP may be necessary), but at the moment I'm just interested in gauging, well, interest Quote
Jreacher Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 It looks great, would be a great dragon to a large MOC. Especially if you put it with a bunch of skeleton knights. Quote
TheOneVeyronian Posted June 24, 2015 Author Posted June 24, 2015 Thanks! Having a look at it again, I actually just managed to convince myself that it wouldn't be too hard or expensive (just slow!) to get all the pieces to build this in black (the tail end poses a small problem though - it only comes marbled). So now I have something LEGO related to get on with during the summer now I'm almost caught up with everything I want until September, plus it'll look good displayed with my other LEGO dragons For those of you wanting to see real bricks, or just curious to see how this build would work, keep a watch on this thread. You won't be disappointed Quote
TheOneVeyronian Posted June 24, 2015 Author Posted June 24, 2015 (edited) So in preparation for BL'ing the model, I decided to do some research into existing part colour combos (PCC's). I ultimately decided to go with black, and recoloured my LDD model so it only has existing PCC's (well, except the tail end, but in my defence, it does come as a black/red marbled mix ). This is ultimately the look that the real life MOC will have: More feedback and comments are appreciated. Do you think black is good for this model, or would I be better off with making it a mix of white and light gray instead? Opinions please, and if you ask me nicely, I may make a buildable white/bley version too If anyone wants to scrutinise the new LXF, please ask me and I'll post it here. nivremis Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 (edited) This is surreal. I've just been mucking around with the framework for a skeletal dragon, inspired by the titanium dragon set I built a few months ago. You're definitely more advanced than me at the moment though - loving your work. For the tail piece, have you though about using the one from the titanium dragon? Set number 70748. Has a blue tip though, so I don't know how that'll work for you. My own's currently on hold at the moment, thanks to RL stuff, but I'd love to see how yours progresses. All the best. Edit: Was just looking through your flickr - have never come across your stuff before, but that's some amazing builds right there. Edited June 25, 2015 by nivremis Quote
Master_Data Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Great job all around! Both are amazing, but the white one just has an edge over the black one. Quote
TitusV Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Wow. The black is cool, but if you want a skeleton, then you should take the White, for a normal dragon take the black. Quote
TheOneVeyronian Posted June 25, 2015 Author Posted June 25, 2015 Thanks again for your comments! Here's a 100% buildable white version (to make it possible, I had to make a load of it grey, not sure whether to just make it all grey and do that). Not sure how I feel about it to be honest, the bley really breaks it up, not to mention this one will be a LOT harder and more expensive to Bricklink (the hoses are available in white but all of the lengths are about as rare as wild snow leopards so went with bley for those instead)... it's so hard to choose one to make! On one hand I have the more expensive but more natural feeling white skeleton which would probably look really good mounted on a display plate, the other a more fantasy/dark magic oriented black one which would look good with an army of skeletons... I'll probably start making my first BL and BnP orders later today (BnP is working with a week's delay so I should really make it today if I have any hope of getting the parts before August ), so again, any thoughts on whether the black or white/bley one is better to go ahead (now you can physically see both options) with is much appreciated Quote
Isundir Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 (edited) To be honest I think either one looks great both the white boney one and the black fantasy one, almost tempted to order parts and make a personal MOD version Dracolich... Edited June 25, 2015 by Isundir Quote
Balbo Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Very nice work on the dragons! Especially the head and the body looks great Quote
TheOneVeyronian Posted June 26, 2015 Author Posted June 26, 2015 Thanks again! I finally decided that white/bley was the way to go given I had enough white rib pieces in my possession already (but the flex tubes in the spine will be black because I am a cheapskate ), and I've already bought over half the parts to it. Annoyingly LEGO put over 140 of the pieces I needed onto backorder so I'm unlikely to see my BnP order for over a month But my first BL order should arrive in the next few days, so I should have enough to build the foundations of the spine so I can see if it will indeed keep it's shape and remain assembled when fully built. Frozen Assasin Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Fraaackkk...this is beyond amazing. I really don't have any words for it expect..."something...something...hope for the next Heroes..." I wish they really released a set like this. Quote
TheOneVeyronian Posted July 9, 2015 Author Posted July 9, 2015 Thanks again for the kind words, it is much appreciated I am currently amassing the parts needed for this project, but what with an order from the Netherlands containing crucial parts getting stuck in the post, as well as a new LEGO collab project and an artwork project taking up all my time, it's getting done slowly. I've built most of the spine so far and it actually holds up and the flex rod keeps the curvature surprisingly well. In a way, the real brick version is slowly getting underway. Quote
