lostdriveway Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 So along with the engine shed I designed I was also working on some additional coaches for my Emerald Night - but without the expensive windows. You can basically label them what you want but I made a Sleeper, 2nd Class, Kitchen Car, Dining Car, Generator Car and Baggage Car. Now I know back in the day the coaches were heated from the steam in the boiler but my Emerald Night runs modern excursions so the addition of the Generator Car is for more modern luxuries. Sorry about the backgrounds but I'm running Mac and don't know of any rendering software I can use. My inspiration came from seeing some of the other longer Emerald Night posts that have popped up recently so I'm certainly not taking credit for the design or look of the different cars but showing that by stripping down the expensive windows and looking at alternatives you can really come up with some great add ons! Redimus Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 A train of that sort wouldn't need a generator wagon, normally the coaches would have a dynamo and batteries slung underneath the floor which would generate and store all the electricity needed for lights and whatnot. Some later steam engines also had a generator built into their own design too. Also, have you considered using the 4x3 square windows instead of lots of little 2x2 windows? I think it'd look nicer (although not as nice as the rounded ones granted) and cream frames for that type are a lot cheaper than the ones the orginal coach came with. Otherwise, looking good! Quote
lostdriveway Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 I had looked at the square ones yes but didn't really like the look of them - at least with the smaller ones you can keep the round feel which is what I was hoping to achieve. Yea I understand about the generator wagon but I liked the look of it so threw it in anyway.. Couldn't think of anything else to call it - maybe just another baggage, mail or goods wagon even. Quote

With little modifications you could make the generator into a livestock Wagen ( https://en.wikipedia...Stock_car_(rail) ) it may be not really logical to have it on a passenger train but I'm sure some rich dude would want to transport his horses with a passenger train. Oh, there were plenty of horse cars that traveled with passenger trains in the US in the days before the interstate system. They typically looked like baggage cars, but had the main distinction that one end of the car would open completely, e.g., I've see at least two streamlined versions that, aside from the end door hinges, were completely indistinguishable from baggage cars... and in fact after the horse transport business dropped off many were re-purposed to be baggage or express cars. ecmo47 Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Nice! Glad you liked my baggage car design. Doors dont open very well but they look cool! Quote
Rotundus Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 (edited) A note on the horse car... If you went horse racing before the advent of the airplane for such purposes, shipping your animal by rail was your only option . An observation car would be cool, too.
