I've been working on an Engine Shed for my layout over the last couple of weeks. I haven't been able to do any actual Lego-ing because we are moving soon and I have already packed everything up. Anyway this is what I have been working on to integrate and build once we have moved and I am sorted again. This is the first building I have done in LDD so feedback is definitely welcomed!

I plan on adding details etc at a later date as well as more detail to the outside like some graffiti etc..

Thanks

That's looking good. A building like this would probably have storage tracks out front and a small yard to the side (all off of your baseplate). I like the fact that you used the garage doors, I think this is an excellent use of them. Two small changes that I would suggest, first, I think you should have the garage door track stay high and horizontal rather than looping back down. Otherwise, when the top of the door starts coming down it might hit the top of the locomotive. Second, the gay fence bits you've used don't come in gray, which is a definite shame since that is an obvious use for them.

Very modern design compared to many of the other garages I have seen and I really like it! If you truly wanted those and your not a purist you could paint the fences gray.

Great Job

Yea couldn't quite figure out how to keep the doors horizontal up the top because that piece curves back down. Would have to look at some other options with the groove to see what else I could do.

I didn't realise they don't come in grey either which is a shame as it makes a great chain fence!!

I like to modern / modular look over the older look as it will mostly service diesel locomotives and the Emerald Night before it goes on excursion.

Oh, that's right, I forgot about the fact that those 1x14 bricks bend back down. Getting the groove AND the bend is difficult. One could probably snot something, but that would take a lot of trial and error. The one stupid idea that comes to my mind is putting in a second pair of those 1x14 bricks upside down right after the current ones to keep the doors up. Otherwise, the overhead tracks will limit just how many door segments you can get in.

Yeah, I had been watching those nets for the very same use, heck, they even used them like that in the lego movie... sigh.

Nice job on the design!

I have always wished they had a front half and a rear half for the roll up door track, and some intermediate pieces, so you could combine them to make a taller door. The width is also a little too narrow for me.

There is a 1x4 brick with a notch on the side (part 2653), I wanted to try using those to have a longer track, but it doesn't really work, there are small ribs inside the notch, that the door sections get hung up on.

I think it needs something on the roof - skylights, maybe some ventilation units? And of course roof access, and a small wall around the top of the roof so people just don't go falling off. I'm thinking of something similar to elementary school buildings in the US, which at least around here tend to be spread out and flat.

Yes the finer details are still to come - ie aircon units, roof access etc. I should change the title to include WIP.

I tried to make a mock up of my roll up door idea (to make a taller roll up door), and it mostly works. It takes a little jiggling to move the door. The main problem is the 1x4 bricks with the side notch (2653) are too deep for the roll up door glass pieces. The door goes up and down, but because the groove is too deep for the parts, the door can get askew in the track and then get stuck in the internal ribs those notched pieces have.

My idea of using two of the 'tooth' parts (49668) with a headlight brick guides the door from vertical to horizontal pretty well. Take a look at the photos I took. I just used parts I had laying around to put it together, so looks a little messy.

I think a more perfect solution would be to cut in half 2 of the existing horizontal track pieces and then add in the middle some of the side groove parts to make the necessary length of track to fit the door height needed. That is a hard one for me, to cut a Lego part! Haha..
