DJ Mad K Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Hi, just a question. Am I allowed to base a whole species and lore on a LEGO character (Unikitty) from the movie for my own ideas? It would be in no way connected to LEGO, no use of bricks or their logo or their character I'm basing the species on. Here's an example of what I want to do: Unikats, a species of spliced kitty unicorns that live deep within the Lumen Forrest. Each and every one of them have special magical powers related to the weather in some way (like water, electricity, and light). The cat half of the Unikats are based off of different species of felines (e.g. One may be a half a Munchkin cat while another may be half a Siamese cat). I want to hear other's opinions over this, just so theres no trouble if I decide to do it. Quote
dr_spock Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 What country are you in? Are you doing fan fiction? Do you plan to profit from it? Etc. Quote
DJ Mad K Posted June 6, 2015 Author Posted June 6, 2015 Canada. Not fan fiction. Not sure. I do know that I want to animate some shorts and maybe music videos too but, I don't know. Is starting a Patreon bad for that? Quote
Deathleech Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 So you basically just want to use the idea of a cat and unicorn combined to create a new animal? Unless it's made out of Lego or has similar characteristics to Unikitty, I can't imagine it would be an issue. People have been combining and creating animals from existing ones for decades. I probably would call it something vastly different than "Unikitty" to make sure you are in the clear though. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 You also have to consider that Warner Bros owns a stake in the IP too. Make it a little more generic cat-with-a-unicorn-horn and it is probably safe. Quote
MAB Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 LEGO were not the first by a long way ... https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=caticorn Quote
