Build the Models Your Parents Warned You Against

Very interesting title... *sweet*

Shall I reply to this as a father or as an AFOL? :-|

As a father, I can only encourage my kids to build these sorts of things to rebel against our current health & safety nanny state.

Kids should know what is safe and what isn't. Its an important thing to learn & something I think is missing from modern society. I bet you knew how far up a tree you could climb & your limits of jumping off walls.

Do kids today, when they are ferried from activity to activity by car & all playground equipment that may even remotley risk minor injury through stupidity is removed from playgrounds.

But this is no the place for this sort of discussion, so I will stop ranting now.

The Forbidden book looks quite interesting. I also thought of buying "The Unofficial LEGO Builder's Guide":

http://www.other-world.org/Library/LegoBuildersGuide.html

I build the same way as I did in 30 years ago, just fiddle with the pieces until the job is done. The recent models seem to have interesting techniques that are new to me and were not possible with ancient piecies. Did you find the book useful ?

Mmm, it is only 26 USD cheaper to order multiple items separately, how convinient:

So you're saying we should do this:

Don't touch it Jimmy, it's hot!

What's hot?

......Then again, touch it, Jimmy.

OW!!

That's hot. Don't do it again.

X-D X-D X-D Just kidding! (I agree with you, though!!)

Anyway, that looks like a good book! Time to shoot the cat with that tile gun! 8-

The Unofficial Lego Builder's guide is an excellent book on the fundamentals of Lego design. It clearly states what many of us know but have never put in words, and it includes a valueable Brickpedia appendix on many categories of brick elements, illustrated and listed by part number and date of issue. My wife and I consult it at least once a week.

I've ordered Forbidden Lego. Imagine the Lego product line if Bart Simpson was CEO.

That was a great link, I ordered the "The Unofficial LEGO Builder's Guide" :-)

I checked few samples of "The Forbidden Lego" and it didn't look so inviting after the initial buying-frenzy-feeling. It looks like the font used in book seem to be quite small, half the size of a regular books. Also they shoud list part requirements in their website, because I think some models need two 9V motors and I don't have any.

After all I like kinetic stuff much much more. Have you seen this:

I have the book in question.. its 186 pages (including blank pages for notes

It includes the following projects

1. Paper plane launcher Non lego: a pice of string

2. Candy coated catapult needs 1 motor 1 old technic gearbox Non lego: spoon, paper

3. Ping pong cannon. Non lego:ping pall balls

4. All terrain lego. Needs 2 motors Notice : You have to cut axels to build it.

5. High velocity automatic lego plate dipenser. Needs 2 engines Notice: You need cutting a gear down and glueing pieces togther :-(

Tips and trick (how to connect to battery boxes to get more juice to the motor)

So what do I think about it?

Personally I think this book sucks , Im glad i Got it for free, I would have hated to spend money on this.

I dont like having to destroy lego to build things, and I think the projects are flimsy and boring.

Your own imagination is better , and spend the money on a new set instead of this crap.

Bringing up an old topic. I got this book for Christmas, and there is a nice list of bricks to buy for each project. But sadly no numbers on the bricks, does anybody have a list with numbers (for easier shopping!)? I'm planning on building the Paper Plane Laucher.
