alex54 Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Yesterday, I was building my new sets the 2 new spongebob and the castle ship. When I was building this nice castle set, I found very strange white cone... And all the cones in that set are the same... Just look here: white: new mold orange: regular mold (old mold now?) It seems that TLC has made a new mold for this piece, which now looks more like a mega :-X than a regular LEGO one! I think that the reason is that you can do what you want with this piece without being in an "illegal construction" situation (like a cone with a 1x1 brick in top of it, which is "illegal"). Does anybody else have noticed this? Quote
Sir Dillon Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Meh. I think you're right... this is so that pieces won't slide down too far on the piece. I don't think it'll look much different if you have something on top of it, but if not it looks odd. Quote
xwingyoda Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 G I never noticed that !! Tks for pointing that oddity Alex ;-) Is that piece only with the Castle ship ? *yoda* Quote
john cleese Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Man this sucks. I suppose they made it to cut costs again. The old molds are probably worn out and this designs cheaper, this company has lost its roots completely. :-X Quote

xwingyoda Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Thats the thing here: I see no reason for a change !! I can understand big parts, colours and so on but here, I see no logical reasons (apart what Alex wrote but even that sounds too insignificant for the cost of a new mould). And yet another TLC mystery !! yeay !! Go scoubie :-D *yoda* Quote

At the moment it seems that the mold wore out and they decided to "improve" the new one. I'll reserve my judgement until I get one... Quote
Shakar Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 What if it's just a mismolded (sp) piece? You said that there was only one in the set. Shakar Quote
Sir Dillon Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 What if it's just a mismolded (sp) piece? You said that there was only one in the set.Shakar But he said that all the cones in the set were the same. :-/ Quote
xwingyoda Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 But he said that all the cones in the set were the same. :-/ I just looked on BL, but that darn set has not been inventorised yet |-/ The mystery continues... *yoda* Quote
ZeekyBoogeyDoog Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 The mystery continues... *yoda* Indeed. I'm puzzled, the cone is the last piece I would expect to get changed :-/ Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Are there really building situations where other parts slide down too far and break / get marked? I've never encountered any building problems with it. I like the regular cone design... though I suppose the newer one's made to look more like a gun muzzle? Or something? Bleh... I'd like an official statement on this. Quote
Shadows Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 *buys up all the old cones on Bricklink* One day they'll come crawling to me, begging for their classic cones, and then my plan will finally be complete! *laughs an evil laugh* >:-) Doesn't look that bad though ... I'll also wait until I see one in person before I worry too much. Quote
Starwars4J Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I don't like it at all, the normal cone looked much better IMO, this looks...ugh :-X I hope this doesn't start appearing in all the sets... Quote
Shakar Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 But he said that all the cones in the set were the same. :-/ Oh, I didn't read it correctly, my apologies. I really don't know what to say...other than that I'm kinda scared.Shakar Quote
the fixer Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 That new cone doesn't scare me that much... The new non-shining gold pieces in the 'Caste' sets on the other hand... Now THAT's starting to look Mega Blocky! Quote
JINZONINGEN73 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Dear sweet hades, this better not turn into a big debate like these boogers did when they were changed: http://www.bricklink.com/search.asp?viewFr...chSort=P&sz=100 Quote
mutley777 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I just had a look at my 7666 hoth rebel base set and they are the old style cones :-/ So no new ones there then. Quote

As far as im concerned this is a sad day for the afol community. No doubt the price of cones on BL will go up. Quote

Well, I thought about it... what mocs might it make "impossible"? The current pegs still only let another piece slide down so far. I mean, maybe SOMETIMES the need will arise for a cone that tapers off, but... it's probably outweighed by new ideas that'll pop up. Quote
ZeekyBoogeyDoog Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 I was checking my skeleton tower set out of curiosity and I noticed it had this style cone as well. I wonder if this has to do with the horn parts? Quote

As for space mocs, these will probably make for more greebling possibilities. However the old ones worked great for both situations. Quote
Shadows Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Glancing through the summer catalog, I can see where they're definitely using these in all of the new Castle sets, but others don't seem to be. I think it's limited to white at the moment, maybe it really does have something to do with the horns, but it doesn't seem that critical to me. I was more annoyed when they moved the sprue point on the seats. Quote
