I found it kind of insulting. Mr Colbert thought he was being clever and funny while he was infact poking fun at our hobby in a demeaning way.

Well I think the goal was to 'poke fun' at our hobby as most people would, only to be shown in the end how lucrative it can be, and what nice things can be made. I do think, however, that it was done in a poor way and I ended up feeling a little insulted regardless of his intentions.

I agree to an extent. But even when he was presented with his statue I found that Colbert wasn't praising it for being LEGO but instead for being him.

Well that was the point, he was playing the part of the egotistical fool. He was playing a part to get the audience to laugh at him since that's just in-character for him.
