zjonathan Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 I am working on a Star Wars Star Destroyer design MOC that I got from another user. The design is great overall, but there are places where the designed specified parts that just don't exist. For example, part of the design calls for a 6x6x3 hinge windshield that comes in a light grey or light bluish grey color, neither of which exist. Other than the more recently introduced solid tan color, all other parts like this are transluscent. I need a solid light grey color. Has anyone run into a similar situation, and can provide any suggestions on how to solve the issue? This is an awesome model, and I hate for one part to become the reason that the overall model doesn't look good. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Quote
Calabar Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 (edited) Maybe it is a "digital only" MOC, that uses parts in colours that has never been realized as real parts. If you are re-elaborating the model, you could try to change the colour of the part with a similar one (or completely replace the colour in the model) to solve the problem. Otherwise you could wait that TLG release the part... if they will ever do that Edited May 9, 2015 by Calabar Quote
zjonathan Posted May 9, 2015 Author Posted May 9, 2015 What stinks is that other than tan, all of the existing parts are transluscent, with the closest match being the black color. I am not satisfied with the result so far. The original designer posted pictures that were all grey, so I am not sure what he did. I will see if I can contact him. Quote
Classicsmiley Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Are there any pictures online of this model? I'd be interested in taking a look at it. Quote
zjonathan Posted May 9, 2015 Author Posted May 9, 2015 (edited) I just went to the designers MOC gallery, and it appears that the person that I got the model file from has taken down the pictures for that particular model. Edited May 10, 2015 by zjonathan Quote
zjonathan Posted May 9, 2015 Author Posted May 9, 2015 Okay I found the original designer and his model. The original designer never built it himself, so he doesn't have any screenshots of the model built with real bricks: http://mocpages.com/moc.php/376650? Quote
___ Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 That is absolutely normal to me as one has no obligation to strictly stick to really existing part colors if he is designing a MOC digitaly (LDD, MLCAD etc.): he probably made photorealistic render so you thought it is actually real build model. And as Calabar said: in such case all your chances are hoping that TLG will someday release the part in designer's color...or replace it by some other color that really exist. Quote
zjonathan Posted May 10, 2015 Author Posted May 10, 2015 Oh well... this gives me a chance to get creative. I will spend some time looking to see if I can find other ideas for creating sperical radar domes. Thanks! Quote
sparkart Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 If the part is a clear dish or dome, you may be able to paint the inside, and get a very close color match. For my Imperial Probe Droid, a 10x10 dish is needed for the top cap of the lower body part, but it's not available "in the wild" in black. I painted the concave underside of the part and it looks close enough to shiny black plastic on the top, that no one yet has been able to figure out the painted part when I challenge them, "One part on this model is painted, can you guess or tell me which one it is?" Those cheap acrylic crafts paints come in a LOT of colors. I bet there's a pretty close match for light grey and light bley out-of-the-bottle with no mixing. Quote
