Okay, eurobricks agrees on this almost completely: the 2007 playsets are CRUD. But not until a few days ago did I find out how cruddy they were. Take a look at this picture of the Toa Mahri Undersea attack:

cruddyplayset.png

Now, the first thing that would come to most people's minds is: "hey, why is there a Green Kalmah? And why is Jaller's mask so weird?" At first, I thought these were meerly prototype images: until I saw the playsets in Walmart - with the same images. Inside the Toa terain crawler display flap, all is revealed.

2007 playsets have major figure problems: meaning that half of the figures have the WRONG heads. But this is not a mistake, no, this is on purpose. Aparrently, someone at TLC convinced Lego to cheapen production prices by making 3 toa heads and 3 barraki heads, and then recolor them, making 12 "different" heads without making new molds. Thus, Ehlek has 3 eyes and tentacles, Nuparu has a Faxon, and Pridak looks like a white Takadox. :-|

You know what I think? I think TLC should fire the person who suggested this boneheaded idea, after TLC loses tons of money on the worst playsets they've ever made. Okay, maybe not, but I am really fuming over this, all the same. >:-(

That is very surprising. To be honest the biggest reason why I wouldn't buy this set is because considering for the parts in this set that I want it is over priced.

I wouldn't buy this set or the others anyway. I dislike bionicle. The whole theme in my opinon is crud. (Absolutely NO offense to the many bionicles fans out there ;-) ) As far as quality control goes with other sets, I opened my batcopter/scarecrow biplane set to find a 2x2 inverted slope replaced a 2 x 3 slope. :-| Come on lego! The only other times that happened to me were in a 3 month period! Whats up lego, get with it! Now I have to wait 3 weeks for the other part to come in!!!!!! >:-(

Same. Ugly design, high cost... and ALL I want out of the set is as many of those particular minifig arms as possible... and even there... there's hardly any in it!

If I understand you correctly you are not so much troubled by lego-quality issues, but merely by some discordancies involving the storyline.

Therefor I don't think the title of this thread is subtitled the right way.

Now let's face it:

In my Lego-collection (not involving Bionicle) I own about 1000 minifigures, more than half of these figs have the same face: the standard lego grin pattern. Never had any problems with that...

I understand your rage, but when put in perspective I would say: live with it or leave the Bionicle playsets sets on the storeshelfs where they belong (IMO).

S'ok, Pirates is crud too.

I kid, but still kind of redundant to say it's crud, then "no offense." By gods, just stick with your opinion :P

I'll admit it's crap for Lego to do this, but I think the little submarines by themselves look pretty cool. I don't buy the sets for the mini figures anyway, I've hated them all three years :P

Although those little Visorak were fun to flip....

Like, I understand that human minifigs have like 8 million smileys all over, but when it comes to specific "characters", they at least try draw different facial distinctions to them.

So, this makes the thing going on here with Bionicle look like a DOUBLE cheap-out.

In my opinion, it is a quality control issue, as last year, they did make all 12 faces for the Piraka and Inika. TLC seems to be cheapening the quality of the playsets this year more than last year. This may be better than 2005, but it's still very dissapointing.

Now let's face it:

Look above.

but I think the little submarines by themselves look pretty cool.

I do too! That's not what bugs me. What bugs me is that they are in Bionicle, and they aparrently are supposed to be Rahi, just because they have tentacles on their backs and "claws." The Toa terain crawler is a rahi in the storyline, and anyone who knows the storyline can tell that the set is not how it actually looks. The Toa are supposed to be riding in between the armor plates, not going through airlocks!

Though, that of course wouldn't be as cool....

As Greg Farshtey would say, however, these sets are marketed at 6-8 year olds who honestly dont care what they're paying for as long as it has the word "BIONICLE" branded to it.

Exactly! Except that they seem to have at least one distinct intrest: lots of guns and explosions: "WOW ZOMG that monster just blew up and all those pieces hit those guys boom that is so awesome!" - steriotypical and exaggurated 8 year old response.

I doubt that Greg and the story team really like the playsets either, though. They had an interesting idea with the Toa riding on the rahi - and then TLC just messed the whole thing up with their crap-set. :-|

FYI, the minifig arms in the set are rather useless anyway, they made new molds for them for some stupid megablocks reason.

Oh? Like for what?

Well, the fact that it's closed on both ends now makes it not only sturdier, but more realistic, not to mention that hose connection makes it look more spacey. I recently used a pair of robot arms on a little MOC, and these new ones, from the picture you provided, would fit in really nicely. Besides mecha, they can also be used on small guns, doors, hatches, and definitely greebles.

Wait- I thought that it was only a box problem. Damn, this REALLY sucks. >:-(

I am 100% on your side about this, Grevious! >:-)

Did anyone else notice that Kongu and Matoro have Volitaks, but Nuparu, the one who actually wears a Volitak, has a Faxon? That takes the cake IMO.

I just don't get why they did this whole playset thing. They could have devoted so much more to the actual sets.

EEEEEEEEEYAGH! WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?

I'll tell you what... more sales on Exo-Force sets, who have them as they were.

Well, from what I've seen in the short Mahri film they've got on their website, it looks more like your big average vehicle than a creature... But then again, that's as far as I know about the storyline, seeing I've never read or seen anything about it... except for the 3 films but I did'nt quite got the continuity right, I think, since I don't really see the link between the first batch of toa in the first film and those in the second and third... And I may be wrong but I don't think those are the same than the Inika and Marhi either... *wacko*

As for the sets themselves, I kind of like them better than the previous ones... Though I still don't like the minifigs... They look way too megablockish for my taste... but the vehicles (or rahi or whatever) seem a lot more consistent... Except for that huge wierd head on the front of the terrain crawler which just look silly with it...

I may even get the deepsea patrol, it's got lots of parts I might use for nt too expensive a price.

And I love the way they've done the jellyfish :-P

EDIT :

* Really cool Cordak Blaster plus Ammo that can be found on 9 other megafig sets

That on, the other hand, is the most useless part of the sets IMO. Well, at least this one works better than thase squid crossbow thingies or those ball thrower etc... But I find them just pointless. They don't even look like anything usefull.

What is it with TLC and those shooting things anyway??? I mean even those old canons in the pirate sets... But at least those looked like canon, so even if you don't use them to shoot things you can still leave them on the boat and they still look good...

But everything else they've done in that vein lately looks just plain stupid on top of being useless...

There are other parts in the sets you can use... the Blaster isn't the only part of the sets.
....you....like the Cordak blasters? X-O

X-O Shakar X-O

Hey, I do too. :-P Not very useful, but like I said, you can use OTHER parts. The Cordak thing is sorta optional, if you like it, good, if you don't like it, get rid of it. Yay.

Of course. I won't stop myself from buying a set which has lots of parts I need just because there's one useless one in it... I bought Hydraxon and Maxilos because they look fantastic and I just chucked the blaster in a bin along with my other squid launcher and all those missile launcher from those Star Wars and Exo Force sets...

Ok, I admit it, on maxilos it doesn't look half that bad... but on Hydraxon it's horrid... the color doesn't match at all! I mean it's the only red part on the whole thing...

Great Magic of Do-What-You-Want LEGO ON!!

Sure, I always remove them (well, right now I have only Maxilos and Hahli, but I'll do the same to all the other summer sets), I was just surprised to read that Master *yoda* likes those....things. Maybe he doesn't know that those blasted blasters are one piece?
