Sariel Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 Just an idea. Surely not the world's most practical transmission since it's complex and has some friction, and it can get jammed if there's a slight misalignment of the driving rings, but it works. I felt like using two Servos to get only 4 speeds with my previous design was a waste, so I came up with this. Building instructions: http://sariel.pl/downloads/ Quote
Blakbird Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 This is a cool idea. The only drawback I see is that you really have to be paying attention to what you are doing when controlling it to get it in the right gear. This seems like a perfect application for a feature I hope will eventually be available from SBrick: programmable channels. If I could draw a 6 position slider (like a shifting gate) and then assign the two servos a position for each gate position, then this transmission would work remotely just like sitting in the car. Trainmaster247 Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 cool but that looks like a lot of work! Quote
piterx Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 cool idea! i think a 6 gearbox is far from being functional tho and ill explain why: first of all it causes too much friction second: however you set up the ratios, youre gonna end up into something like choosing if you wanna have a 1st gear so slow it gets useless because the second gear is enough to start the vehicle, or a 5th gear wich applies so much friction that motors stall... this is basically what was happening with my pajero pinin and i only had 4 gears +R so i think that the configuration that works the best is 3+R but i can be always proven wrong :P Quote
Kiwi_Builder Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 Another great design Sariel This creation gives me even more reason to get the new driving rings and a second servo motor. I see that the gear lever that engages the gear comes out of contact with the driving ring when engaged, does this cause it to slip out of gear under high torque? Keep up the good work! Quote
Sariel Posted March 19, 2015 Author Posted March 19, 2015 I see that the gear lever that engages the gear comes out of contact with the driving ring when engaged, does this cause it to slip out of gear under high torque? Not that I've noticed. But you could gear down Servo's output to limit lever's movement and make it stay in contact. Quote
