I have always been a fan of trains, but I have felt that the Lego models have always lacked a little bit, whether it be the shape or something else. So I decided to have a crack at it and this is what I came up with.

This is a GP40:

Because of how I did the cabs, you can't stick a minifigure in any of them, but I don't think it would add to the model in anyway. Anyways, I thought I would try posting here and see what kind of feedback I got.

That's great work you've done here, e.g., the prototypical windows on the cab and the doors on the long hood of the GP40. That's a great way to introduce yourself and welcome aboard. Keep it up.

Thanks very much!

Some of the proportions seem a little funky, but they have a Lego feel to them (like a set Lego would actually make). The dark blue is nice too!

In what ways? Would you please elaborate? Clearly that is something I have missed.

Here's a look at the intermodal set I have been working on too. This is a triple set, I am also working on singles and doubles (if they exist). This is done in the TTX variation and the containers are in CSX blue. Because of how I did the containers this has a very high piece count, but I do think they look okay.

Thanks all for the great feedback so far! I look forward to hearing more.

Cheers,

Nice work on the intermodal (the locomotives also). Would you mind sharing your LDD file for the container car and the containers? They seem pretty neat but the details are hard to catch the way the pictures are framed.

Triples are rather uncommon. Doubles more so. The most common configurations are singles and 5-unit sections.

Doubles like this:

Here's a better shot of the container (I hope) as I'm not willing to share just yet:

Ladders are far too bulky. Wheel spacing a little narrow. Hood is a little tall. Cab/window are a little long... etc.

Here's the thing though; are you trying to make the most accurate model you can or are you trying to do more of a Lego-scale cartoon (a la BNSF/Maersk locos)? If the former I think there's a limit to where you can get with 6-wide/stock motors. You should also consider building off a drawing with a "brick paper" overlay. If the latter, I think what you have is very good already, hence my comment about the Lego feel.

Thanks for the feedback. I received similar feedback and made some changes and this is the first revision (of many I'm sure)

To answer your question I am aiming for a "middle ground." A model that is accurate but also still usable.

I really liked the idea of the bogies moving independently from the stair railings in your first version. I feel like that would make it look a ton better going around curves on Lego track if there was enough clearance for the bogies.

I'd also like to see you attempt a CSX GEVO loco to add to the fleet. Here is my version I built pretty recently, one of first train MOCs.

I liked the idea too, but it was pointed out to me that the curves and switches would cause the cars to uncouple if I didn't have the stair railings and bogies attached directly, so I changed it.

I would love to do a GEVO style loco, but I haven't come up or seen a method that looks right yet. Once I do I will be sure to post here about it.

You can check this project out on "Lego Ideas" here: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/97223 if you'd like. I am leaning towards doing more of my updates there.

Thanks for your feedback!

Hmm I wonder about this, especially if your locomotive magnet (separate from bogie) and the magnet/bogie on the trailing car had a significant range of motion. Something I will have to experiment with at some point. Maybe it would work on the new ME Models wider radius curves a little better too. I think it would most certainly look better running overall.

I agree with you as well. You'll have to let me know if what your experiments yield when you try it out. Thanks for the support!
