neoconagenda Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 (edited) I have a large Lego collection Technic and SW UCS and have run out of room. I have not made up my mind on which direction to go but if I decide to drop the technic sets I think that I may have an issue since I have used various MODS on them. Lets use the ultimate 8043 for this question... Is it right for me to sale it as an ultimate 8043 knowing I had nothing to do with the MOD -or- Do I strip it down to the stock version and sale off the MOD parts seperate? I am leaning towards the latter choice but it would be easier to just sale it with the MOD... Your opinions on this are very much appreciated! Edited March 9, 2015 by neoconagenda Quote
DrJB Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Well ... when you built the ultimate, did you borrow parts from OTHER sets or got new parts from BrickLink? If you borrowed from your other sets, it makes sense (to me) to sell it as basic (the way you bought it). Of course, there are many right answers to your question and others will have different opinions. Quote
neoconagenda Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 I bricklinked the parts so I have a pretty substantial investment. This question came up when I read in another post a while back that someone got in trouble for selling cavegod's AT-AT... I know that was an MOC but I have not come accross anything dealing with the sale of MODS... Quote
Blakbird Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Typical etiquette is to at least discuss your intent to sell the model with the designer. Luckily for you, most of the designers are probably members of this forum. Quote
neoconagenda Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Sounds like a plan. The fact that I am even conflicted is because I know that a ton of effort goes into the directions alone not to mention the intellectual credit for the MOD itself. Thank you for your input on this as well as all the other work you do for the community. Quote
Lakop Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I would sell the parts (ie: a bag of beams etc) on ebay but it's upto you. Good luck with it. H Quote
neoconagenda Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 If I do go the direction of selling off the Technic sets, which is going to be a last resort, I believe I will bring the sets back to base and sale on eBay and then get permission from the MOD creator to list the other parts as "MOD kits" and sell them at cost in the forum... Nazgarot Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Sell it as a modded model, and makes sure to ask the creator first (or at least inform him of your intentions) and make sure you credit him/her when you sell it. There is no law preventing you from selling it, but it is normal etiquette to ask the creator first. Most creator are probably ok with it if they are asked, but might get disappointed if the find someone selling their mods or mocs without informing them. Best of luck with the sale. (Though I think you would get more money for the SW UCS sets, and then you could reinvest them in Technic... ;) (That's what I would do...) -ED- Quote
Kelkschiz Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 First of all I would seriously consider not selling the 8043 since it is such an awesome set. But if i had to sell it, I would sell it in it's original form because it would probably be easier to sell that way. Quote
neoconagenda Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 None of this is easy. I have pros and cons for both types but the issue is that I love all of my Lego! I hope that I can find a better solution for keeping them on display. I should honestly box them up but the idea of nobody enjoying them seems sad to me... I need a Lego intervention Quote
dr_spock Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Sell it as a 8043 since people may be more interested in the original than the MOD. And sell the parts for the MOD separately for someone else who wants to MOD their 8043. Maybe you should check with LEGO too before selling it since you used their building instructions. Quote
MacKaiwer Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Sell it as a 8043 since people may be more interested in the original than the MOD. And sell the parts for the MOD separately for someone else who wants to MOD their 8043. Maybe you should check with LEGO too before selling it since you used their building instructions. I think that's quite a truth... I am quite new AFOL and not so long time ago I paid for complete, original, used and good conditioned 8043 set 200 euros including shipping costs and I think that was very reasonable price... So my opinion is too that you should sell 8043 as original set Quote
D3K Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 No one can deny you selling whatever you have bought with your money, even if it is their design. If you know the designer, perhaps give them a heads up that you are about to sell a MOC/MOD of their design, and credit them in the ad for your sale. If they are not fine with it, sell it anyway - like I said; it's your investment, the designer is not going to make or lose any money from it, they'll probably just gain a fan or two more In my opinion (keep in mind, this is my opinion, and this topic is asking for opinions), selling a MOC/MOD is no different than selling any official set. If the MOC has paid (digital) instructions, then I think it is fair that the seller inform the buyer on where to get them, and for the buyer to purchase them from the MOC/MOD's designer. That way, the designer will actually end up making money off of it Quote
neoconagenda Posted March 15, 2015 Author Posted March 15, 2015 I want to thank everyone that replied. I have decided to pack up some sets and save them for a rainy day rebuild. I am going to leave the ultimate 8043 built tough since it is an awesome feat of Lego!!! Quote
