LoneBrickerSG Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 (edited) Hello. I normally build trains and City stuff, but my Pirates always dominated my childhood builds and so I wanted to finally give them a worthy vessel to call their own. This ship is not yet named, and I am trying to keep it visually similar to other official ship sets released through the years. When I start building I'll be using set 70098 Lord of the Rings Pirate Ship Ambush as the basis, as there are some cheap ones on eBay that don't have minifigures. I am liking the way this lower deck turned out so far, although it's a tad cramped. I plan for it to have two masts and hopefully a decent-sized captain's cabin. I know it's fairly short but I may change that in the future. The only thing I wonder is whether or not I should raise up the forecastle a few bricks so that the middle sits lower than everything else. Edited February 25, 2015 by LoneBrickerSG Quote
clm Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 You should check the parts in the pirate ship ambush set, it is a very very flat build with not a whole lot to build up the hull sides or rigging. For a couple bucks a piece you may want to just bricklink the hull pieces. Chris Quote

The cannons are already in my collection, as are many of the design elements I have in mind. I was only considering using the LOTR ship set because it has a lot of parts I want to use in other things. If I can't land a fig-less one for as cheap as I think I can, then I will totally change it up and go through BL to get the ship parts I don't have. Quote
LittleJohn Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Looking good so far! I probably would raise up the forecastle, but that's up to you Quote
LoneBrickerSG Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 Thank you LittleJohn, I appreciate it. I think I will raise it up, if for no reason but to help keep it visually interesting. Quote
__________________________ Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I like this a lot! You should move the cannons up 1 stud vertically, because this ship, with people on it and cargo and heavy cannons, would reach that water level and sink.. Quote

clm Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 (edited) Well raising the cannon would depend on if you feel the prefab hulls are the whole hull or equivalent to just the part above water more or less. I tend to think they represent mostly just the area near to and above the surface seeing as there is no "keel" or otherwise defined bottom but different people have different ideas. Cousarmy0001 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Are there 2 mid-sections in the hull? Quote
LoneBrickerSG Posted February 27, 2015 Author Posted February 27, 2015 Are there 2 mid-sections in the hull? Yes. Only two. Have to keep it fairly small for display purposes. Quote
Admiral Bejaune Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 To be up front with you, I would scrap what you have and follow these steps in building a ship. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=30623 In my opinion It is the best way to build a ship on prefab hulls. Best of luck. -B Quote
clm Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 (edited) No need to be a Lord Business about it, I want to see how his ship turns out :) That and I like seeing how people tackle the stern with this newer universal bow/sterns... Not the easiest to make look smooth. I like the classic pirate styled ships as much as the overly ornate, realistic, and greebled stuff. I say let the creative juices flow! Best of luck. -B Yeah, no. I've looked around at other people's ship models and the realistic ones look absolutely fantastic, but I don't really want to get into that sort of advanced stuff for this ship. For now trying to keep it simple, but effective. Quote
LoneBrickerSG Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 I kind of dropped the ball for a few days due to other stuff going on, but I managed to make some headway last night. Quote
Kolonialbeamter Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Hi there, looking good so far, especially the stair designs are neat. Five guns on a two midsection build seems a bit crowded, but hey, firepower is power, right I suggest you think about a (semi) open gun deck, just like (almost) every official LEGO ship has it, for reasons of playability and display purposes. Or do you intend to put more guns onto your ship? Keep it up Regards, KB Quote
LittleJohn Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 This is looking fantastic so far! I love the prow and those stairs are great! Quote
chofus Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Nice ship, this is how should Brick bounty look, also great detail with gold chains. Quote
Captain Becker Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 I think its going great, Though I think you should go back and build the whole deck/Cabin thing again, and try to make it a bit sleeker looking. Usually the captains cabin was on the same level as the gundeck. That is if oure not planning on making a galleon of some sort. Theres a frigate though wich has this kind of cabin at the back. The Berlin wich was build around 1625 or something. Not really sure. Theres great pictures of it if you just google it: Captain Becker Quote
