I am purchasing one of these two very soon and I would like a good compare and contrast. For the record I am talking about 7094 vs 70404. I realize they both have their flaws, but if I get 7094, then I plan on getting a large base plate for it. Also I am getting Dragon mountain regardless, which comes with a dragon. I also already have the rest of the 2013 line, which tower raid connects to 70404, so I would just have to get another one and 70404 would then be larger. But I have to be honest, I hate the way the kings throne room looks on 70404, it seems poorly designed. The throne room on 7094, isn't much better, but it is bigger. But I've heard bad things about the gate and bridge on 7094, while the gate and bridge on 70404 seem better.

Given this information, what would you do if you were me?

I do.

However, the only reason I own 70404 is because I have this OCD where I must own every Lego castle ever released. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have bought it.

7094 on the other hand brought me out of my dark ages. I loved it back when it came out and I still do.

What exactly do you prefer about 7094? Also what are your complaints about 70404? I'm really trying to make the best desicion possible, especially since my wife just told me that I can only have 1 castle, because I said "well I'll just get the other one for Christmas next year." she then replied "you only need 1 castle!!!" lol.

Since 7094 brought you out of your dark ages, you must have a certain affinity to it. But personal feelings aside, you still prefer it huh?

Originally I had my mind all made up, I was going to get 70404. But then seeing 7094 made me lean more towards that One. But I read a comparison between 7094 and the red 2010 castle, and the majority seemed to prefer the 2010 castle. So that got me thinking maybe the newer castle is better again, but most seem to prefer the 2010 castle over the 2013 model anyways....

I'll try to type up a detailed comparison later, but for now I'll just say that I feel 70404 is the worst castle Lego has produced since 8781 (released 2004).

Coincidentally both these castles share the same childish blue color scheme and huge crowned lions.

The throne-room design problems are due to the fact that the model needs to have all of its main features visible in one photo for the front of the box, and also not affect the structure design.

she then replied "you only need 1 castle!!!" lol.

She knows nothing! (I have all of the castles, bar the yellow and 2006 castles.)

The new castle would surely be heaps cheaper? While it has down-sides, it gets more hate than it deserves. If you have the other sets, this one would suit your collection better, & the 4 skeletons would be a waste when you could otherwise beef up your existing armies. The entrance is the best TLG has produced for quite some time, the other one is a bit annoying. And you get a newer horse.

Of course, the Crownies are nice and another dragon, who could say no to that? If you put it on a baseplate that solves the "pick it up and it all falls everywhere" issue. And the price for this one will surely only increase.

I would consider the 2013 castle to be a decent compromise between the Fantasy and Kingdoms castles. If you can only have one, that makes things difficult, they are both nice castles. But since you asked, I would go for 70404 under your circumstances, especially since you intend to use 2 gatehouse sets to expand it, as I have done.

Thanks Artanis, you pretty much echoed my exact thoughts. That is why I have decided on 70404. Not that I don't love what the other one offers, because I do, but the fact that I already have the rest of the 2013 line does play a role. Actually I let fate decide my choice. I went to Wal-Mart this past week and I said to myself "if they still have a gate house raid in clearance, then fate has chosen which castle I should get." Because the last time I was there, which was a few weeks ago, they only had 2 left. So when I saw the last remaining gate house raid, I knew which choice I needed to make.

I also figured that with the 2 gate house raid sets added to 70404, with some other modding, it could be a really nice castle. So yes 70404 will be my first Lego castle, excluding wolf pack and forestmen sets I got as a child, besides those were not really castles anyways.

I am really adding a lot to my Lego collection with our tax return money, which is exciting, but only one castle for now. But I will still consider a 2nd castle probably next Christmas. So that decision will hinge between buying 7094 or building my own 6080 with parts from bricklinks. So any thoughts you might have on that front I'd appreciate.

The Lego world I am creating is basically a blue vs red world, they are the main governments if you will. That includes at sea with red and blue ships. But of course other factions also exist like many individual pirate ships and the Dragon knights which are basically just plain "evil". I just decided to go for a midevil and pirate themed world that coexist. But as I said before all blues and all reds are on there given sides, so 70404 serves as the castle for the king of the blues. I don't yet have a castle for the reds obviously, but I modded my own port royal where the red governor commands, so he is in charge of the reds for now.

Yup also that's my Lego world....

The new castle is of better design but the old one has better colours and heraldy. But cheaper price and the fact that you don't *need* another dragon per se makes it an easy choice, I'd say.

Well finally got our tax return today, so I officially got 70404 ordered. Its been a long wait, but can't wait til it arrives. I also bought a 3rd gatehouse raid at toys r us, so when the castle arrives I plan on just modding it to fit my plans. Super excited to all the additions coming into my Lego world!!!!

I will. I went a head and stooped by tru and got a 4th gatehouse, because they were the last store I found with them (after the 2 I bought, they still had one more.) 3 just seemed uneven to me. I'm going to put one on the front, One on the back, and one on each side. I'm going to use the kings tower as a keep in the center. I have some other mods planned as well, which will bringing either monday or Tuesday when it arrives.

Thanks man, I can't wait to build it. I am also adding the large 48x48 grey base plate with two 32x32 green base plates.

As for the gate house sets, they are just so cheap right now (if you can find them in stores), that I just couldn't help myself. This thread really served its purpose, many of you helped lead me in the proper direction. I'm sure kings castle siege is a great castle, but once I'm done with 70404, I think it will be the superior castle.

Just received 70404 in the mail, super excited to put it together. The only bad part is I have stuff to do today, it always seems to work out that way. I didn't have squat to do yesterday, but no packages came. But today....

Thanks. I'll get some picks up soon. I went with a different approach then the others I've seen. Mostly due to making it look symmetrical and being able to hook together properly. But I tell Ya, even though base plates are not mandatory anymore, I think they make a huge difference.

I have 4x 70404... with a few extra dark bley 2x4 bricks from yourfriendly neighbourhood BL seller and you can get some serious castle action going on... at some point I'll post stuff... but I'm already behind on the Elf Army vids *sigh* so much LEGO so little time...

Much Love

Indeed, it is good to make something new in ideas and build :-)....EEnjoy!

I think the kings castle (2013) because you get a lot of banners, blue, and the castle is modular so you can make it bigger!!

Yes it is, mine is currently taking up an entire 48x48 base plate, with a gatehouse in front of it using most of a 32x32 plate. So yes that's pretty massive for a (mostly) straight out of the box castle.
