Do you understand the idea behind .mpd (multi-part dat) files? Once you have multiple .ldr files in an mpd, you then have to switch between them using the "Active Model" dropdown to edit them. To use them in your overall model, you add instances of them from the "Document" section of the parts tree. I suggest creating a .ldr file just for the main model, so that you can keep things well-organized.

If you've recently installed the Ldraw programs from the All-in-one installer, you probably have lots of mpd files in the Ldraw\Models directory that you can look at and play with.
