I was looking at my collection of original sets and tried to establish a pattern. Is there some logic as to the coloring of pneumatic tubes e.g., black for high pressure and light gray for return lines? I thought I was onto a 'pattern' but then some sets use 3 colors (black, grey, blue). Is the choice of color simply done for differentiation and ease of assembly or there is some 'hidden' rule?

As near as I can figure, it's the above for modern sets (since the introduction of the blue tube), but in the two-tone old days (e.g. 8455, 8868), it is light grey for pump -> valve, dark grey for valve -> cylinders.

I have yet to come across a set that breaks this rule, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything!

Check out the picture of 8455 - it doesn't follow your pattern. Front cylinders have both either light gray or dark gray tubes attached.

I'de place this rule under unwanted colour vomit. Would look so much better if they were all dark grey and I don't think having two or three colours makes it all that much easier to not make a mistake. Would it be better to have a sticker sheet with a bunch of numbers on it so you could number the hoses as you build and then remove the stickers when finished? Less chance of making a mistake, better overall look.

That's exactly why I asked, because the 8455 (I have 2) does not fit such rule/pattern.

Well, that'll teach me to post something before actually checking it. I stand corrected.

I've never seen a consistent pattern to the colors. I think the color differentiation is mostly to make the model easier to build, but the colors don't really have a universal meaning. That's too bad, because such color coding could actually be useful. I've certainly seen MOCs which color code consistently (blue = supply, black = extend, gray = retract).
