Perterz Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 (edited) UPDATE BELOW 29/01 As the title says, I'm an absolute newbie when it comes to LEGO Technic. I actually only build Model Team but these fantastic Technic MOCs make me very interested in trying it out. I'm trying to create a Model Team SUV body but with Technic underpinnings as I want to make it remote controlled steering and driving (RWD as 4WD is to much for a starter). But with 0 experience it's not that simple therefor I'd like to reach out to you for input. Will this steering setup work? The top axle will connect the steering wheel. Hope I don't make a complete fool out of myself as I feel kinda stupid but I'm eager to learn! Any input is very appreiated! Kevin SUV.lxf Edited January 29, 2015 by Perterz Quote
DrJB Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 (edited) Looks like it should work. I do not have the 2L rack and I'm assuming it can slide on the studs. If not, you might need something different (#2 below). Other than that, you may need some small changes: 1. Swap the 12 and 20 teeth gears. You want to REDUCE the speed coming from the motor (not increase it) 2. The gear rack is fixed and cannot move side to side. You need to modify that part and make sure the rack can slide left-to-right. 3. You are using 4 connectors and 2× 3L axles to connect the 5L liftarm holding the motor to the 2 bent liftarms. You should replace with 5L liftarms instead, for much more sturdy assembly. Edit: It looks like this mat not work as the 5L is not long enough, and in your contraption the 3L axles are not pushed all the way inside the connectors. ++ = Also, the 2L rack you're using is a very rare part. Unless you have it, you might be better off using some of the more common racks. Edited January 28, 2015 by DrJB Quote

I tested the gearrack in real bricks a minute ago as I have those few parts in hand (except the motor) and apparently it does slide over the studs rather smoothly :) 3. Good you mention this, I've tried 5L beams in LDD but they won't attach as indeed they haven't the correct lenght hence the solution with the 3L axles.. I might redesign that part holding the motor to the chassis along the way. I'm not sure the current solution is good enough. Thanks again for your time and input ;) Kevin Quote
JamesJT Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Use the chassis from 8081 or 8048. They are both very easy to add the PF parts to. Quote
Perterz Posted January 29, 2015 Author Posted January 29, 2015 (edited) I've updated the area that holds the motors. The red motor (left) powers the steering while the green one (right) powers the rear wheels (LDD). I've started on the drivetrain taking your tips into account. Any input? LDD file attached Thanks Kevin SUV3.lxf Edited January 29, 2015 by Perterz Quote
