Hi,

I'm Jeff. an AFOL in his 40's.

The down and dirty non-Lego background:

Started life out in Groveport, Ohio (big claim to fame right now is Le'Veon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers Running Back went to High School there). At 18 joined the Navy. Spent the next 20 years, working on the Lockheed P-3 Orion.(hence the screen name) Also happened to spend the whole 20 years based out of Hawaii. After retirement tried to go back to Central Ohio and get started in a new career field. Not easy to do with Aviation in your background. So ended up in Kennesaw, Georgia, where I currently work for Lockheed-Martin in Final Assembly on the C-130J Super Hercules.

The Lego Background:

Had sets as a kid, didn't we all? When in Hawaii started to buy them for my step-son. Ended up buying all kinds of Airport sets, made quite a few MOC aircraft. We so far as to take colored electrical tape and completely cover his bedroom floor in tape to build an airport.

When moving back to Ohio, all the Lego sets/MOCs were loaded into a box. When moving to Georgia, one box made it (the spare parts bin. According to wife, the box with the good stuff in it, was left in the basement of the old house by my direction.(Don't remember that, but probably did, I know some stuff was left purposely there.

Never really though much of Lego... Then Last January. I did a trip to Florida for work. When returned, I had some extra money in the bank(per diem/expense reimbursement) My grandson had a gift card for Toys R Us. We went there to spend his money (He's now 18 months old) While in the store I thought, I'm spending some money on ME for once. Saw the Technic Racer 42000 on display. I wanted that... Guess what after two TRU, no racer. At the second store they had the Technic 9398 4X4 Crawler, and the Technic Unimog 8110. Thought both were great sets. Settled for the 4x4 Crawler, though the RC feature would be cool with my Granddaughter(now 4) and Grandson.

Since then what I have have picked up quite a few sets. As well as my granddaughter being introduced to the Lego Friends line with a little set.

I also have crossed over to Mega Bloks. But only for a select few sets. Like the Hot Wheels licenced ones(had Hot Wheels as a kid too) and the Cat Construction sets.

I'm not a out of the box leave it alone type of guy either. If I don't like it, I will mod it to my liking. IE http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=104808 Though run across one here and there, where it looks great out of the box, and can't come up with any mods to make look better. The ECTO-1 Ghostbusters car comes to mind here.

Jeff

Spent some time in Alaska. Mostly in the Aleutian Islands (Adak & Sheyma)

Hawaii not bad at all for the weather. Cost of Living really sucks. $750,000 is average price for a house, and that'll get you a shack. $7.00 for a gallon of milk ON BASE. I always joked you couldn't get by unless you made a $100,000 a year. I sat down and figure in all the allowances I got, and it worked out to like $95,000 a year, and we lived paycheck to paycheck. Starting pay at Walmart is like $15 an hour, And it won't even get you close to what the 8 bucks an hour you'd get at the Walmart down the street from your house would get you.

Have three kids, Boy and two girls. Grand kids are one each from the girls. They are in their 20's.

Yeah, I see what You mena. That really sucks.

Still there is a reason why Hawaii is that costly, and in my hometown you don't have that weather, those sights, all those small atractions and opportunities that living in Hawai would give you. And 750 thousand is a also a shack. Though, of course Luanda or Moscow would be a lot more expensive

But wow... Aleutian Islands. So You've seen a lot of places that average Americans would never think about  I guess that some of these islands are probably even inaccesible for civilians right?

So how's Georgia comparing to Ohio?

Are You thinking about settling down there for life, or is it just like another stop until the right time comes?

Correct. Some of the islands are/were military bases. I have managed to see quite a bit around the world. Though most of my time abroad was spent on the Asian side. Few stops through Europe on a couple of "around the world" flights.

So how's Georgia comparing to Ohio?

Not too bad. Cost Of living about same. More Mountainy here than Ohio. Love the off-roading in the mountains. Weather a touch better than Ohio, in the winter.

Are You thinking about settling down there for life, or is it just like another stop until the right time comes?

I'm thinking this is it.

I guess it's a bit warmer there too  So You're a southerner now, not a Yank anymore

And yeah, landscape seems to a bit montainous. Closer to ocean though, still about 100 miles to go to Savannah, but it's much closr than Ohio

BTW did they allow Yoy to take Your plane with You?

Or are Your new Hercules toys much better? :sweet:
