What parts are necessary for Steampunk builds?

To those who are experienced with Steampunk builds, can you help me with a guide of basic parts that are needed for all kinds of Steampunk builds? That also includes minifig parts as well. Some tips and techniques would suffice as well.

The reason I'm asking for this is because I want to create an overall guide in the near future for people who are wanting to build Steampunk things but aren't sure what parts to use and, overall, help them out with this guide. Like I said, the guide will contain a list of important parts, minifig parts, and building techniques.

For starters... Steam! Most steampunk builds I've seen use stacks of white ice cream pieces to represent steam, and the MBA steampunk set used white 2x2 domes.

I noticed this book on Amazon that might be some help it is called "Steampunk LEGO" by Guy Himber

Okay, thanks guy.

I'm still going to have to gather up more essential parts to add to the list as well.

And does that book have a list of parts in it already as well as techniques? From what I saw on Amazon, it looks like it just shows pictures of builds but doesn't actually help teach you to build.
