cody Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 From my observation of the 10,000 gold c3p0, the limited 500 Darth Vader Death Star Box and the 1 silver c3p0 I believe it is fair to state that SW lego is trying to exclude certain fans to enjoy its product. Is lego NOT capable of producing more gold c3p0? NO! Is lego NOT capable of producing more Darth Vader Death Star Box? NO! Is lego NOT capable of producing more silver c3p0? NO! So they are not "not capable", but more like "won't" or "reluctant to". it is clear that this ideal toy for everyone is polluted with the idea of profit maximisation, contaminated by the act of market dominance and infiltrated by the spirit of perfect capitalism . I really feel greatly dissappointed after all these years of being a SW lego fan. I thought this series was public, open fairly for everyone to enjoy. Look what is happening. It seems that only the rich can afford like 300USD for a figure while the rest of us can only stare. Star Wars Lego has always been our hobby, our little escape from the harsh cruel world, our little paradise where we can expand our imagination with our beloved classic science fiction movie. Today, let us stand together, and fight for a fairer Star Wars Lego distribution. Quote
Siegfried Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 You are getting a bit worked up over nothing. The golden C3P0 is only a chromed bit of plastic, and ultimately Lego is a business out to make money. I would prefer that Lego keep doing what they are doing now than go bankrupt. (Or worse, be bought out.) If this is what keeps them in business then I don't mind it too much. I may get annoyed with Lego changing Australia twice the USD price, but I simply buy the sets that are a good deal, and many are these days. In the 80s Lego was soooo expensive. (As for the "harsh cruel world", your life can't be that bad. You have access to the internet. You obviously have some Lego. *wub* Life could be a lot worse. My advise for you is to get some perspective. I love my life and all of its blessings. *wub* ) Quote

madoka Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 What is this Darth Vader Death Star Box that you're referring to? Quote

Lt. Col. Thok Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Meh.... that golden 3-PO is just a little extra thing, same with the Death Star box. You get it, you say "Oh, that's nice", and you put it on a shelf and start building the set. No big deal right? (That's actually what I did when I found one.) Quote
Joebot Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 When Lego got the Star Wars license, they entered a whole new market -- collectibles. Prior to that, Lego was rarely viewed as a collectible. Yeah, there were some hard-core AFOLs who would try to find old sets, but Lego is kinda weird in that regard. If I have all the pieces in my collection to build, say, the Galaxy Explorer ... does that mean I REALLY have the Galaxy Explorer?? It's almost a philosophical question. That all changed with the Star Wars license. I see all these marketing stunts with the gold C3PO and whatever else as Lego really embracing this collectible market. Collectibility is driven by exclusivity. The rarer something is, the more commotion there is around trying to acquire one. Of course Lego COULD make more gold C3POs. But by creating an artificial scarcity, they drive up demand and create more interest. It's the same thing Hasbro, DC Direct, Mattel, McFarlane, and every other toy company does. I understand your frustrations, but honestly, you just need to walk away from it. If you don't have the time / money to find a gold C3PO, then you just move on. Not everybody gets to drive a Porsche. If all you can afford is a Ford Escort, then so be it. Quote
trooperdavinfelth Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 (edited) Exactly. And well put, JB! I myself doubt that I will get one of the fancy threepios, but do I rant that lego should make more? No, I sit back, snap my fingers, and wait for the next promotion. I am one of those people who will never win anything put up on a computer, but I don't care because I am happy enough with the sets. Lego does such a good job on the sets, it offers the most consolation you'll get! Same as JB said, just let it alone and let it relaaaaaaaax. EDIT: I couldn't help but notice how you said this which quite disturbs me: SW Lego is trying to exclude certain fans from enjoying their product. End quote. I will now respond to the 4 points of bold type: Trying? Lego WANTS everyone to buy their stuff! It's not as if they don't want people to have it, it's all in the definition of PROMOTION! A Promotion is when the company puts something special in some of their products. People buy more of them hoping to get more threepios! When they don't get threepio, the set they just bought consoles them! CERTAIN fans? What, ya think Lego went out and said, 'We're gonna give this to everyone but him, so make sure he doesen't get it'? NO! Once again, PROMOTION! ENJOYING? LEGO MAKES THE SETS SO THE WORLD CAN ENJOY THEM! PRODUCT? The golden threepio is not a product, it comes with a product. So you're saying that unless you get a threepio with your set, you won't enjoy the set? Ok, I'm done here. Edited July 18, 2007 by trooperdavinfelth Quote
meschepers Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 I agree completely with Joebot. I can't think of another toy company that hasn't pulled stunts like this before. Whether it be taking a code from the package to register it online for a chance to win a prize or making limited editions and charging more. Personally, I didn't really care to find a golden C3P0. I haven't bought a Star Wars set, or any other LEGO set, for quite some time. I simply can't afford to. As a college student who is working and taking classes I don't have the money to spend on LEGO. And, even if I would have had the money I didn't feel a need to buy anymore LEGO kits than I normally would, I knew the chances of finding one were very low and I didn't have the money. LEGO was, is and always be the best toy company. They have turned it around since four years ago. They are producing more quality models. Let's be happy about that instead of bitter about not getting a bonus. Quote
