misupix Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 While I really like the set 21103, I was never really happy with the look. I think the hood looks awful (for me THE Delorean trademark is the flat inclining hood) and the A-pillars are way to thick. So I made some minor "adjustments": - changed to A-Pillars to something thinner and adjusted to meet the adges of the roof. - flattened the hood to get the DeLorean Look - lowered the "seats" to allow more upright seating for the figures - modified the doors to allow two minifigs to fit in at the same time - changed the front to black (like in the movie) I think the look is much better now, so I wanted to share with you. Let me know what you think. Quote
MrManiac Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Ooh, very nice job. My little brother actually commented on the model just yesterday about how it didn't look much like an actual Delorean, and I think I may have to borrow a few of your elements for a touch up. Quote
Boettner Builds Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 You have fixed my complaints about the DeLorean and it looks BEAUTIFUL!!!! Quote
JackJonespaw Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Quite good adjustments to this - the hood was always my main beef with the original, nice to see a fix. Quote
plastic_ati Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Nice modifications, thanks for sharing. I may borrow some tune-ups from your version. Quote
legocrazedkid Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Nice. Good to see a classic from my childhood.... Quote
Captain Braunsfeld Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Good MOD, the side-view looks great! Quote
Moustagua Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Your solution for the edges of the windscreen is great. i'll do the same on mine. Quote
Jay_Em Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) I did something very similar with the hood and the doors, but that A-pillar change is very clever- gonna have to steal that! apologies for the awful quality of this image, had to resize it downwards in imgur. lightningtiger Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Ah, now that looks better......more movie like.......Brick On 'misupix' ! Quote
antp Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 (edited) In the movie the car had a light grey translucent band in front of the bumper, hence why they made it white rather black. Ref pics: http://www.imcdb.org/i002059.jpg / http://pics.imcdb.or...0050zq.8503.jpg Correct color for that could be either light grey (too similar to the car itself) or very light grey (not many parts available in such color...) so I kept it in white for now. Something missing in the mods shown above is that the front between grille and hood is a darker grey (in plastic on the real car). So on mine I used dark grey plates for that (and increased the thickness by 1 plate, as the front seemed a little short) and of course I also did the change of the hood : http://imgur.com/a/By7Bv But I'll definitely try to change of A-pillars using misupix's idea. ScottishDave Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 misupix: that's much, much better. I love your solution for the "A" pillars. They look about the right length and angle for those on a DeLorean. In the movie the car had a light grey translucent band in front of the bumper, hence why they made it white rather black. How about flat silver? light in colour, yet different from the car. You could even use grille tiles if you widened the bumper by one stud, which would also look more accurate overall. Quote
antp Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 (edited) I tried to widen the bumper when I made the hood/front changes, but then the binoculars between bumper and wheel are in the way. Also, the curved brick does not seem to exist in flat silver. Edited January 19, 2015 by antp Quote

I see both your points :-).

I used flat silver cheese slopes, more grille tiles on the sides plus I lengthened the front by another stud. I don't really want to hijack misupix's thread by posting pics of my DeLorean: and it is so derivative that it doesn't deserve a thread of it's own, but if you want to see what it looks like, I put a picture on imgur Quote
antp Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 The idea isn't bad indeed, but the big slope piece + the bumber makes the front really too long IMHO (too much overhang) Quote
misupix Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 So many great improvement ideas! Thanks for the feedback. I've now changed a bit myself. Reattached the white bumper because you where right: the movie-car has a white band around the frontbumper. But I also noticed that is has a black Frontspoiler under the white bumper, so I built that too. I'm pretty happy with that look now: Quote
Jay_Em Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Just tried the A-pillar modification myself, and noticed the flick-fire missile piece you used doesn't have a hollow end- did you have to modify it to fit the T shaped piece in the end? Quote

Sayroll Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Hello, Regarding this a-pillar mod, I've been searching desperately for the piece used on Scottish Dave's (the picture linked in his reply), which is the same that was used on Larry Lars's Delorean; it looks like some sort of sword or blade, but I couldn't find it any where on Bricklink. If someone could give me the reference or point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance! Quote
Boettner Builds Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 That piece comes in earth colours too. I want to think its like a blade of grass or some other plant piece. In bricklink it's under "other" and it's called A spike. Quote

LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 Much much better! The A-pillar, the flat hood and the black front are very good changes! Quote
