mostlytechnic Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 My apologies to the assembly for my error in protocol. I should have said Speaker: adam (Archie Matthews)
Lego Spy Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Well, I have obviously have no way to prove it, but I'd swear it on my music career that I am, and always will be, a Loyal Representative of Super City. I'm not going to vote for just anybody who steps up to the plate, so I'll be waiting to here what the others have to say first.
Piratedave84 Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 I'm not understanding why anyone would vote for anyone else than themselves at this point ... I'm not sure I'm willing to trust anyone but myself. I'm going to hold off on my vote for now; that is to say, sell me the idea that voting for one of you is in my best interest.
jluck Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 I'm not understanding why anyone would vote for anyone else than themselves at this point ... I'm not sure I'm willing to trust anyone but myself. I'm going to hold off on my vote for now; that is to say, sell me the idea that voting for one of you is in my best interest. That's really a good point. We have no reason to trust anyone other than ourselves, because even if someone has helped us in a previous political battle, they could have had alterior motives. Right now, I'm inclined to push for you all to vote for me, because I know I'm a townie so that's the best info I have to go on
Tamamono Posted December 20, 2014 Author Posted December 20, 2014 Speaker Tally Siegfried Dixon (Speedy) - 3 (Speedy, Mencot, Brickelodeon) Carol Nottingham (Calanon) - 2 (Calanon, Scaevola) Archie Matthews (Adam) - 2 (Adam, mostlytechnic) "Tiny" Peter Rutherford (TPRU) - 1 (TPRU) ~10 hours until voting begins. The representative with the most votes will become Speaker at that time.
Yzalirk Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 I'll have to abstain my vote on this one. I don't see a clear reason to vote anyone for speaker when they haven't given much of a reason as to why they should be voted.
Walter Kovacs Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Well, well, well. Today is certainly the most interesting first day of a session that I've encountered in my nine years of public service. It certainly will be one to remember. As for the task at hand, I have known Siegfried for many years. We have worked together on countless committees. I know him as a man of integrity, and one who is passionate for his causes. Therefore I vote Speaker: Speedy (Siegfried Dixon) Note that this endorsement is in no way a confirmation that Mr Dixon is loyal to the government. He is just as likely to be in Octan's pocket as the rest of you (myself excluded, of course ). At this point in the day, there is very little evidence of anyone's allegiances to either confirm them as loyal or condemn them as a traitor. Let us hope that more information is forthcoming. To be honest, I just want to get my vote out of the way so that I can continue watching the Indy 500. Uh, Mr Laughlin, you do realize that the Indy 500 is in May? And today is January 19th, don't you?

So: Speaker: Lego Spy (Lloyd Spalding) Uh, Mr Laughlin, you do realize that the Indy 500 is in May? And today is January 19th, don't you? Perhaps he missed last year's...? *shrugs*
def Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 You could say I have quite a strong ego but I refuse to vote myself as speaker as well. I'd like to hear from some people who believe they are best suited as the speaker here. So, Siegfried Dixon, Peter Rutherford, and Carol Nottingham, would you kindly? What? We don't know what the role even does yet. We do know that in past games with an electable position, that person got killed a whole lot, except when they were scum. So, the best thing to do is have a vanilla loyalist apply. Preferably one who actively participates. I fulfil those criteria. It's day one, and the votes are a shot in the dark, but like always, they can be used at a future point to see what the scum's strategy is. I'm not understanding why anyone would vote for anyone else than themselves at this point ... I'm not sure I'm willing to trust anyone but myself. I'm going to hold off on my vote for now; that is to say, sell me the idea that voting for one of you is in my best interest. Pierce, you know me, we go back many years. Moreover, you trust me. All the legislation we've passed together. Can you think of anybody more suited to a position of speaker?
Scaevola Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 I have to agree. I mean really, how can we trust anyone on day one. So: Speaker: Lego Spy (Lloyd Spalding) Perhaps he missed last year's...? *shrugs* Yes, the truth is we cannot. Chance and erudition from prior legislative experience with the candidate (metagaming) will be the arbiters for this decision. There's really nothing to build on in the first twenty-four hours. Now how about those drinks? This delay be makin' me querulous.

Uh, Mr Laughlin, you do realize that the Indy 500 is in May? And today is January 19th, don't you? Ok, I want to step in briefly and point something out. We've all worked with Rep. Dixon in the past on various committees and we know how he opporates. He can be your best friend when he's with you but your worst enemy when the tables turn. As a upstanding and long serving politician, I am all for selling my soul when it benefits me, but i urge caution in this situation. If we gamble and Dixon is with Octon, this legislative body could be out in the time it takes to kiss a baby.

Now how about those drinks? This delay be makin' me querulous. And this is why I went with chance. Roll the dice and pick a speaker at random from the new members. Plus I wanted to break up the pattern of everyone voting for themselves, or we'd have a 18-way tie. Ok, I want to step in briefly and point something out. We've all worked with Rep. Dixon in the past on various committees and we know how he opporates. He can be your best friend when he's with you but your worst enemy when the tables turn. If he's loyal, I didn't want him to get killed off just for being the speaker, and if he's a traitor, I certainly didn't want him in a role!
Piratedave84 Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 What? We don't know what the role even does yet. In all honesty, if I am to vote for someone else, it'll most likely be you. BUT let's face it, as much as I know you can be the best candidate, I also know you could be the architect if our doom... Decisions, decisions, décisions!
mostlytechnic Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 You know what we haven't had yet in this legislative day? A cry to those who have not yet spoken! Therefore... Misters Benedict and Borchard, where art thou? Your districts deserve their representation! Your silence is alarming, given the gravity of the situation we face! (and yes, I in reality understand it's been less than 24 hours and I'm not ACTUALLY concerned yet...)

If we gamble and Dixon is with Octon, this legislative body could be out in the time it takes to kiss a baby. There is no chance that the role of speaker would give scum the upper hand enough to end the game in a manner of days. It's unlikely. Anyway, that being said, as long as you are a Loyal Representative, you have nothing to fear from me. I am playing absolutely straight here. It's always so much easier to be town than scum. The lying, it's hard to do, but being truthful is easy. And I will not lie to you, my fellow people. Ah! Appel to my feelings!! In all honesty, if I am to vote for someone else, it'll most likely be you. BUT let's face it, as much as I know you can be the best candidate, I also know you could be the architect if our doom... Decisions, decisions, décisions! Honestly, I don't really care if I get the position or not, I think it'll be a minor difference in the game, but as I have said, I am a mere vanilla townie, so it makes me disposable in the grand scheme, and if there is some ability of this position that is of any importance, I will do everything in my power to exploit it for the benefit of the town. In fact, some of the games I've won (and lost) were because I exploited some new mechanic beyond what the host might have predicted... Hmmm... One other point: not voting for speaker should be looked down upon as anti-townie play, much like non-lynching is. You don't have to vote for me, but all good townies should be showing some cards day one. Pussyfooting is not acceptable in life-death situations! Do not pussyfoot!
jluck Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 (Snip) One other point: not voting for speaker should be looked down upon as anti-townie play, much like non-lynching is. You don't have to vote for me, but all good townies should be showing some cards day one. Pussyfooting is not acceptable in life-death situations! Do not pussyfoot! While I am a huge advocate for voting everytime, I feel like this is different. At least for lynchings, we have a few days to build hunches, this vote is so quick that the only person I trust is...well... speaker:J Leroy McCoy (jluck) Because if you think it's so important to vote, i will vote for the one I can trust. And if anyone else is looking for a good reason to vote for someone here's my campaign: I am easy to work with, work with the legislative body as well as individual legislators, am active and honest, and can lead when called on. Seems like I can be as good a speaker as all the other folks, and it seems time for some new blood anyways.
MagPiesRUs Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I'm not sure voting for yourself this late in the proceedings will help much either. To any non-voters, I would suggest picking someone who has already been nominated if you want your vote to count.
jluck Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I'm not sure voting for yourself this late in the proceedings will help much either. To any non-voters, I would suggest picking someone who has already been nominated if you want your vote to count. Maybe not, but it's a statement vote regarding who we can actually trust this early on. I'm not ready to cast my lot in with anyone, my trust must be earned.
Lady K Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Would you be interested in said position? While I agree with the need for change, I would prefer to only take this position if nominated by someone else. I have a proven track record of getting necessary legislation past. I am a favorite amongst those I represent. Trust worthy and loyal they call me. I also agree that we really can only trust ourselves to be loyal at this point. So in the interest of doing what I think is best I will cast my vote. Speaker: Addie Tremain I really do not like these new voting machines! Speaker: Addie Tremain (adventurer1)
StickFig Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Vote: Calanon (Carol Nottingham) I almost voted for Archie Matthews because he got picked "randomly," but it seems suspect without proof of randomness... Carol has just as good a chance of catching Siegfried at this point, and I just don't have a good feeling about him. And now I see I've done it wrong, freshman mistake, here we go again. Speaker: Calanon (Carol Nottingham)
Adam Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Maybe not, but it's a statement vote regarding who we can actually trust this early on. I'm not ready to cast my lot in with anyone, my trust must be earned. I wouldn't call it a statement of trust, more like a statement of faith. We're simply entrusting one person with a few extra powers (for whatever reason, be it random chance or prior experience), whatever those powers may be. Voting for someone else as Speaker doesn't mean you believe they're more likely to be a Loyal Representative than anyone else. I think we've all made it clear that the only person we truly trust is ourselves. But as others have pointed out, if we all nominated ourselves as Speaker, nobody would get the job, and somebody has to. At least, I assume so - Justice Montgomery, can this body operate without a Speaker? Carol has just as good a chance of catching Siegfried at this point, and I just don't have a good feeling about him. Why don't you have a good feeling about Siegfried (Speedy)? You're perfectly entitled to that opinion, but I think a statement like that deserves justification.
Tamamono Posted December 21, 2014 Author Posted December 21, 2014 Speaker Tally Siegfried Dixon (Speedy) - 4 (Speedy, Mencot, Brickelodeon, Walter Kovacs) Carol Nottingham (Calanon) - 3 (Calanon, Scaevola, Stickfig) Archie Matthews (Adam) - 2 (Adam, mostlytechnic) "Tiny" Peter Rutherford (TPRU) - 1 (TPRU) J. Leroy King (jluck) - 1 (jluck) Lloyd Spalding (Lego Spy) - 1 (Lego Spy) Addie Tremain (adventurer1) - 1 (adventurer1) With a whopping total of four votes, Siegfried is the next Speaker of the Legislature. I'll post an interlude tomorrow. Voting is open. You have 48 hours.
Mencot Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 (Found something elsethen my mobile, a tablet or what do you call these things. Not much better ) Okay (not ok-ey) for my comment yesterday and voting for speaker. Iwas about to quote the 3 first claimers for speakerpostition but somehow it posted the modified thing of voting for siegfried. Not that in the end, i would had actually vote for siegfried has the speaker. We will now have to what the speaker role brings. For voting, it will be a bit hard than a usual day 1(and day 1 are always hard to know) to who to vote for. Will have to go through the comments so far a bit better.
def Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Woohoo! Thank you, this is truly democracy in action. The will of the people will not, no, it can not be fettered. People who voted for themselves in a blatant act of copycattery? I suspect you. People who voted for me in an act of sucking up to me? I suspect you. People who voted for Carol for no reason? I suspect you. And those who couldn't be bothered to vote thereby muddying the voting record? I suspect you as well. Clearly, this is a precarious position we are in. I will do my best.
badboytje88 Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Well rats! Who slipped a roofie in my drink?! I missed electing the Speaker of the Legislature. I am not so sure I am happy with the outcome. Siegfried was a bit too verbal about being vanilla for my liking. But we´ll see how this one works out.
