Nerwen draws out her nocturn flute and beings improvising a lullaby, though not putting any power into it, yet.

Etiquette has developed between players and QMs where being active means posting at least once a day. Some leeway is given if the player (or QM) is experiencing life issues and is considerate enough to tell the others in the quest. I understand Christmas and New Years may be busy for some people, so I haven't commented on pace before now. If there's an issue, please let us know.

QM Note: Sorry for the delay. I'll do what I can to pick up the pace.

Nerwen notices that the first guard is wielding a bright red axe-- the second an orange, curved blade.

382340a40e35b31de9297235ce8657f7.png "Probably not from the circus. Shame."

eae3de5f002200865ef67bf4fefc37eb.png "Quiet about the circus, mate. Go talk to the Captain. See what 'e wants to do."

The eyepatched guard turns on his heels, marching into the door, his companion shuffling gently while awaiting his return.

He's not gone long. He trudges back outside, gesturing for everyone to make their way in.

They climb a single flight of stairs-- the scene that awaits them is... not quite expected.

The Overwatch Captain, a friendly smile on his face, awairs the heroes. The two guards stand in a corner, standing ready but not braced for combat. Near the heroes sits a lot table, six pillows scattered around.

Barus puts the chest down with an audible clang.

Nerwen looked around the room, the architecture was exactly what she expected from the outside of the building. The furnishings, too, seemed in the style of the town, functional and unornate. She smiled sunnily.

Yes, this chest is for you. We did have a little difficulty with such a large package, please forgive the scrapes on the side and lock where it was dropped.

As for the smith, we had little Nerwen pauses briefly satisfaction from him. I am sure you are more than able to make this worth our while.

Nerwen continues in an offhand manner, causally wandering around the room, past the other two guards, silently noting entrances and exits and the armements of the Captain

Nice setup you have here, a tower like this you could see nearly everything that goes on.not that there is much going on in town, shame about the murders and all.

"Do you and your men still get out and about sometimes? The smithy wondered why you had not come to pick up the 'package.' He wanted us to ensure that all was well."

Rone. I introduce, extending a hand to the Captain.

I lean against the near corner, sizing up the whole room at once.

Indeed, you must be able to see most of the kingdom from here. I guess that's why they call you Overwatch. Anything you use that supervision for?

The room has two exits; one heading down the stairs where the heroes came, and one to the right behind a closed door. The Overwatch captain doesn't seem to be armed, but has a green rapier stationed on his desk.

Hoke notices the same, but a lack of much else. The room was mostly empty. A few lamps lit the area. The windows showed a clear view of the streets outside. He does notice, however, that things are incredibly quiet. Every so often sound travels through the floor- light movement from above.

The Captain's eyes narrow, but he shakes Dyric's hand regardless.

e0c2263b8de064667b305337b0b582ed.png "Slate. I'm beginning to think this is an interrogation. You'll be compensated well regardless. To answer your questions, our men still patrol. I haven't had the luxury to spare a few to pick up the crate- nor was it a pressing issue. We'll only need that armour if the worst comes to pass."

He crosses his arms, inspecting the heroes.

"I don't know why you're here, but I have heard whispers that Charleton hired a group of Heroes to investigate the corpses. I'm not familiar with the organization. Are you them? No matter."

Slate gestures towards the two guards. They hastily exit the room through the door on the right. The heroes hear the creaking of stairs as they ascend the tower.

e0c2263b8de064667b305337b0b582ed.png "...Right. Let's have a talk, then."

"Let me first tell you about the Overwatch. We've existed for years, slowly building up our forces, each member a trusted companion. We're like the City Guards, but better trained, better equipped, better informed, and better looking. Unlike the City Guard, we're an army. We're Ovalen's standing army, and the Lord of the Overwatch has the final say about what goes on in the City."

"A couple months ago, the Ironwill princeling had... a rather scandalous affair. He slept with at least two princesses from neighbouring kingdoms-- neither of which were his arranged bride. Already tense relations became much, much worse. Redstone suffered-- their heir was put to sleep. Ovalen is suffering; we're in the middle. We're getting pressured from all sides, but especially from the Ironwill. Their kingdom is the most powerful of all our neighbours. Worse yet, Ironwill soldiers have been coming in droves, some seeking refuge, some trying to get a foothold in our city."

The captain sighs. "Those second ones killed off a very important Overwatch official. I'm sure you're familiar with what an Evoker is, correct? Someone who can summon spirits with some sort of gem? Ours was incredibly skilled. The spirit he summoned was one he had been with for a few years-- he shaped that spirit, bound them to the gem. They're strong."

The door to the right opens. A stragely-coloured woman steps out from it, her body slightly transparent and glowing. Suspended in her upper chest is a bright gem-- it must be what is used to summon her.

She bows slightly, though her face betrays no emotion and she remains silent.

e0c2263b8de064667b305337b0b582ed.png "This is Ambrose. She's sapping the life force from the Ironwill infiltrators as she roots them out in order to maintain her form. She's keen on purging them from the city to avenge her fallen master. She takes their armour and anything of note, bringing it here. We bring the armour to the Smithy-- he reforges it, making it into the stronger armour that we wear now. That's what you delivered."

Posted

"Well. This saved us a lot of investigating. So this sapping the life out of the ironwill, that has to stop. We're hired to find out whatever is causing these bodies appearing. The people are terrified. I personally don't really care if it are Ironwill infiltrators, deserters or random peasants that are dying, it's over now. So, how do we get your spirit to stop doing that?"

Posted

What's your angle here? Stopping the Ironwill invasion before it happens? Because let me tell you, there's better ways to go about that. Have you at least gotten some information from the infiltrators before you killed them?

As for the Heroes, if you feel they'll become a problem we could always take them in for a suitable bounty...

Posted

But it's a spirit. One that's killed several military-trained soldiers without a sweat. I'm not convinced killing it here and now is the answer.

I'm also not convinced that the QM would allow the quest to end so quickly.

Nerwen speaks quietly to Guts and Dyric.

If there are heroes about, likely they were only hired to identify what is causing the deaths and make sure that it is not an enemy. Since it is a spirit working for the Overwatch, they'll have no need to stop the spirit, because their task is simply investigation. Heroes will not be a problem, their quest is over.

Speaking of over, our delivery is over also, we should go on.

e0c2263b8de064667b305337b0b582ed.png "Getting our spirit to stop doing that would mean she would have to cease existing," Slate shrugs. "That's something you can take up with her. She's sentient. But she's doing good work."

e0c2263b8de064667b305337b0b582ed.png"The infiltrators would fall on their blades before submitting information to us. Killing them quickly is more humane than torture. And if we've got some monster in our street mummifying people, fear will keep more infiltrators at bay. I see nothing wrong with our methods. If it can prevent a war, it's saving lives in the end."

If we stop them from needing to kill, they'll stop killing. Sounds simple enough to me.

e0c2263b8de064667b305337b0b582ed.png "And how are you going to go about doing that? Stopping the brewing war?"

Slate turns on his heels, striding to one of the windows, his back to the heroes. "Unfortunately, I'm not sure anyone can be reasoned with. In fact, the only reason we're in this bloody situation in the first place is our strategic positioning. People want these walls. People want to be in these walls. We're in the best position to strike out at the other kingdoms. Ironwill, Redstone, Crescent Bay... We can attack them all. But the Overwatch don't want dominion over the lands. The Overwatch are fine holding the state they have. So tell me, mailman. How do you propose to stop a war?"

Posted

"Good sir, how can you be sure which ones are infiltrators? Or can your spirit detect that?

"In any case," I turn to the others heroes, "if there are heroes about investigating, we could save them a lot of trouble by letting them or the city guard or whoever know that there's no danger to the inhabitants of the city and perhaps collect a small reward ourselves. Who knows?"

Turning back to the captain, I query, "Is there anyway to find out why members of the Ironwill are seeking refuge in this city and what from?"

"You are right." Guts shrugs. "Still, having a spirit suck the lifeforce out of people you claim to be infiltrators, without she would die, is one hell of a conflict of interest. "

Posted (edited)

"Agreed, Pretzel." Guts looks around the group. "So what are we actually going to do? Leave the spirit be, let it continue killing people, go back to the watch and finish the job we were hired for. Either convince the spirit to stop and die or kill it, stopping dead people from turning up into the streets, but also possibly letting Ironwill infiltrators through, meaning the guards and the Overwatch actually have to some work."

"Dyric, it's your final call, but I say this fight between cities is not ours, we hold no stakes in any of the causes. What I do know is a bloody spirit is killing possibly innocent people. I say we make sure that ends before we head back to the guard and get our pay."

Guts turns back to the Overwatch captain, almost forgotten him: "We'll be with you in a sec, could you give us our pay for delivering the package, in the meantime? That reminds me... You said the spirit brings you everything of note. Did you actually get any proof that they are in fact infiltrators in that? Or is our guess that they are refugees, a likely one?"
