mrfang2 Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 okay, ive been working on building a full sized version of the construct-o-mech from the lego movie. not acurate, but the right size atleast. anyway, im having a ton of trouble coming up with the hip joint on the model. what i need is something like this: im currently using these as the main actual joint type in the design, as from what ive found its the most sturdy joint type lego has. but those leave an odd amount of length between the axis for the outward and forward/backward movement, and make it impossible to build the hip around. in short, anyone have any ideas for a hip joint that can hold up a lot of weight? im kinda new at technic building, so nothing ive come up with has worked. You can see an alternative (far right) on Mike Nieves' flickr gallery. thanks, but ive actually tested that one, didnt work, like, at all. unfortunately. thing flopped down and shattered, and that one was only half the size it is now. i realize i shouldve given a reference for what was being held up... its this so far, plus 2 large cranes on the back, and fairly hefty arms as well. 5imon Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 (edited) I doubt that any kind of ball-joint or other "poseable" connection will hold up against the size and weight you're planning to put on. (But then I'm not much into poseable figures, so I might be wrong) For something this big, I'd rather try and go for a solution with self-locking movement (like worm screw and gear) that will be posed by turning a little knob or something similar. mrfang2 Posted December 13, 2014 Author Posted December 13, 2014 current lower body, using the above mentioned torso joint, with slight mods, and the hip/legs ive gotten working. i need to double up jointing on the forward/back joint in the shoulder, and the ankles still need more work, but this comes the closest of all my attempts so far to actually supporting the body. you guys have any sugestions for improvements before i start armoring it up? im thinking axel piston bits at the sides of the knees and ankle to stabilize those more, but no clue how much that would help.
