Smitty500 Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Hey guys! I just now finally took pictures of it, But I would like share with you a few simple mods I made to the new AT-AT. I don't believe I have seen anyone else make mods or at least post them. This was a spectacular set for this year, but it lacked interior functionality, and that trap door was not doing it for me. So I decided to make a two story deck/platform, for which (in my case) holds up to 8 troopers. I based it off of Incredible Cross Sections interior detail.(Who doesn't anymore?) I have also modded the back portion to fit a speeder bike (or something, maybe a hot tub?), because that was useless space, and needed to be filled with something useful. Screw Structure! I also thought the walker looked a little thin in the front and back so I bulked it up to be more accurate, I understand LEGO does not have any pieces for these angles so they used the closest thing. I plan to modify the head further to fit two pilots and Veers behind them, because that cockpit so so CRAMPED. http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/401308 Thanks for looking! let me know what you think. Gerechtigkeitsliga Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 It´s not easy to modify this set in a good way, because there are no many ways to do. Till now you did a good job. Looks even better as the original. Waiting for your cockpit mod. Quote
Something_Awesome Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 I do not own this set yet, but I've made modifications to the head (in LDD) which allow the AT AT to have a transparent red tile as the visor (looks more menacing), and I've made the legs taller. I felt that the AT AT needed to look bigger and a great way to achieve this was to make the legs a tad longer because I felt the legs were not long enough. The height I increased the AT AT by is the same height as a 1x2 brick f you put the brick on it's side so that the 2 studs are verticle. Sort of like this: [0] [0] It's a mild height increase but enough to make it look just a bit bigger. Sometimes less is more. I already have the parts to mod it but I am going to wait for the May the 4th before buying the set. Quote
Chills Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 I really like the interior mods you did. I have this set but haven't built it yet. I think I may end up borrowing your ideas. Quote

Thank you, I know it's not much, but I don't really like changing a lot on the initial set unless it increases the functionality, I try to keep the looks the same. Ill post it when ever I get to it ;) I do not own this set yet, but I've made modifications to the head (in LDD) which allow the AT AT to have a transparent red tile as the visor (looks more menacing), and I've made the legs taller. You should build it soon, it was a pretty fun 2 hours, and had some very interesting techniques of holding everything together. Go for it! Quote
saibot Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 Thanks for this, was able to setup a similar internal section based off your pics. I still have that red locking piece on the inside of the cabin, haven't had a chance yet to look on how to remove this without effecting the stability of the AT-AT. I love you mod on the back piece aswell to make it more a storage comparment, this will be my next change. Quote

aaroncb Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Excellent mods, i'll be looking for inspiration from these when i mod my 2 over Christmas. Big fan of the bodywork you did to it also. but please, PLEASE get started on modding the head/cockpit of it :p the lego designed one is.. well..yeah. Quote
Something_Awesome Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 (edited) Cool, could you post a picture of the visor? I am sure by the looks of it you can tell it is a very elementary "mod." Looks great in LDD (better than stock). We'll see how good it looks in person (when I get the set). The AT-AT in this pic is also at its stock height. The mod I have in plan for the AT-AT's height will get it lined up perfectly with the landing pad's walkway. The AT-AT will be more than 1 brick (but less than 2) taller. michaelozzie Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 I like that MOD to the front visor with the trans red tile. Think I will use that too. Quote
Tom Jurassic Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Nice mods! Really take this from a good set, and make it an epic set. Look forward to seeing your finished model soon! Quote

Big fan of the bodywork you did to it also. but please, PLEASE get started on modding the head/cockpit of it :p the lego designed one is.. well..yeah. I pretty much have the mod done, I just left some necessary pieces in my apartment at school (the AT-AT's at my house) in order to finish it off. Then I will take pictures. I'll admit that it came out better than I imagined. I kept the outside of the head the same, whilst changing the inside completely, now it can fit 2 drivers and Veers! Those are very simple mods, but it looks great, maybe I''ll try it out and show ya, I think I have a few police sets with some trans red tiles I can borrow. I took a red light saber rod and stuck it in between the slopes, that looks pretty cool, other than it does not stay in place at all. I thought about designing a thin sticker with a window design that could go in place and finish the look off, but that's just an idea at this point. I really like the platform you have got there, I would like to make one myself someday. Nice mods! Really take this from a good set, and make it an epic set. Look forward to seeing your finished model soon! Coming soon! give me a couple weeks.. Quote
Smitty500 Posted December 29, 2014 Author Posted December 29, 2014 I had finally taken pictures of the cockpit. I was able to squeeze in 2 Drivers with Veers in the back. The head was always big enough, LEGO made the neck so long that it cut into the inside space. So I shortened the neck piece and modded the interior while keeping the exterior the same for the most part. I also stuck a red lightsaber piece between the slopes to act as the window, which really improves the menacing look of the walker. Too bad I only have one of the light blue/grey pilots, as the white one in comparison does not compliment each other well. (For that matter, while a spectacular figure. Why did LEGO make the pilot a light blue/grey, they look white in most reference shots I have seen??) I added a nice big control panel for both the drivers. joebiwankenobi Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 Now these mods are absolutely excellent! Love what you did with the cockpit Smitty! Quote
GuyDudeMan27 Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 These are amazing! I just built my AT-AT the other at and was waiting for this post. I'll have to try these out ASAP. How is the stability of the cockpit? Is it unchanged? Quote
Chills Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 Cool! Love that cockpit mod. I just finished building the set, and I must say I like it a lot more than the previous version. Now to attempt these brilliant modifications. Quote

These are amazing! I just built my AT-AT the other at and was waiting for this post. I'll have to try these out ASAP. How is the stability of the cockpit? Is it unchanged? Stability is unchanged, I do not have any problems while moving the neck around. Cool! Love that cockpit mod. Jedi-Bendu Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I also stuck a red lightsaber piece between the slopes to act as the window, which really improves the menacing look of the walker. I tried that too....but the saber won't stick? It falls out. How did you do it? Quote
Smitty500 Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 I tried that too....but the saber won't stick? It falls out. How did you do it? Haha.. Mine doesn't stick either it's just sitting in place. I thought about putting a dab of glue just so it won't move. Quote
Something_Awesome Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 For the red visor (where you used the red trans tile), I had it so that I mounted the red tile on top of red trans plates so that it appears more flush. Obviously, you could use four 1x1 trans red plates or two 1x2's etc. Anyway, I really appreciate the picture as I think the mod will look great now! Quote

I totally didn't realize that you had red trans plates under the tile, I put that together from memory instead of referring back to what you had Quote
wilson3a10 Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 I would absolutely have brought this if lego makes similar compartment like yours. Well done! Quote
GuyDudeMan27 Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Hey Smitty, I have a question. I've been doing these mods, but i cant figure out where to attach the very back panel. I have the snap plates there, but I don't know where to attach them to the body. Could you clarify/ take some more pictures? I already finished the cockpit, and it looks fantastic! Quote
