PastVPresent Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Hi All, New member, new to MOC'ing... Like a number of others, I have been trying to MOD (or completely rebuild) the Bike Shop & Cafe into a modular scale building. I have only used parts from 1 copy of the set but...I did use my own baseplate and one or two sidewalk tiles (wanted to incorporate the manhole cover I had). Tried to go for an older industrial feel on upper floor with the look of a newer storefront and canopy below. Still need to add details (and an interior) but please let me know what you think of my first attempt in the meantime. Photos below show the building alone plus with the Pet Shop for scale. Thanks! http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=549764 Quote
wondermonkey Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Very nice! Maybe add something to the roof, like a billboard? Something to give it a little extra height. Are there stairs to the second floor? I'm not sure what you have left over from the original set but those are my thoughts if, maybe, you're willing to add stuff from outside the original set. I would have no problem putting that building on my modular street. Quote
finnbricker Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 (edited) I always appreciate a work where someone takes one set and limits himself only to the pieces in that set to create something new. Must be really challenging! I like the use of the snot 2x3 windows, both as windows and as a shelter/canopy on the sidewalk. For a sort of reference, here's what I did with two 31026s and some extra bricks: http://www.eurobrick...?showtopic=9715 and here's what Sonicstarlight did: http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=100970 His work is awesome (as usual). The lack of height was my first concern too - couldn't figure out how to come up with enough pieces to add the third level but felt a bit better when I saw that the DA only has two as well. That said, great thought on using a sign to get more height, thanks. I do have a fair bit of interior pieces left over and plan to furnish things plus add stairs (right now I just have a rear balcony/fire escape with ladder as the only upper floor access, which I know is less than optimal). Finnbricker, thank you very much! I did enjoy the challenge (and money saving) that came from using just one set and was happiest with that SNOT portion of the building you mentioned too. I am very impressed with what you and Sonicstarlight did with this set - incredible work, something to aspire to, thanks for sharing! Quote
Johnny6666 Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Looks great to my eyes - even without the extra detailing you'll be adding. I've been considering buying a second 31026 set for an alternate build, and this works very nicely between the Pet Shop as shown. Please be sure to come back and show us your additions when completed, as I'm very interested! And can I ask: any chance of instructions/LDD file? Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Very nice modular.....planning an interior ? Brick On 'PastVPresent' ! Quote
WarSquirrel Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Great job and welcome to Eurobricks! Quote
PBarrz Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Really great! I had no idea that the original set had so many pieces in dark red! It definitely looks like it belongs on the modular street! I like the half stud off set on the second floor, keeps the buildings face from being too "flat", I like the fences by the roof too, I think you nailed the feel you were going for! Quote

Will definitely provide updates as I find the time to make them... This was all done freehand so no LDD unfortunately but thanks for asking Very nice modular.....planning an interior ? Brick On 'PastVPresent' ! Thank you lightningtiger! I do plan an interior and will upload pics as soon as soon as I build it out Great job and welcome to Eurobricks! Thanks WarSquirrel, much appreciated! Really great! I had no idea that the original set had so many pieces in dark red! It definitely looks like it belongs on the modular street! I was pleasantly suprised by the number of dark red bricks too (helpful for the "historic" look) - turns out the ground floor of the cafe in the original set had plenty of them in the rear and side walls. Thanks for noticing the offsets and cornice details too - went through lots of design iterations trying to add some interest to that portion of the building and may still keep messing with it...
