Well, I have a attempt at a city, "Albriquerque". It's pronounced "Al-BRIKK-kwerkee". Unfortunately, as of now, it's quite pitiful. all it really is is the new fire station, the off-road fire truck and a rescue chopper. sure, i have a big bin of bricks, but i dont have the stuff to build anything AFOL-like. that's why it's pitiful. I'm not old enough to get a job, simply put. i dont have a Paycheck large enough to support the city (except for the 200$ i get at my birthday and christmas, plus the 100$ i got at spring break.). 20$ wont cut it for my needs, however, a adult scale paycheck (or a richer family) would. i'd like to make a decent city though i wont be getting any big sets until nov. 15 and Dec. 25. i'm TERRIBLE at saving up...And problem is, i don't know WHAT to do...do i give up, find a way to resist going insane from money burning a hole in my pocket so i have patience...i don't know what to do, is a city as i would like a total Pipe-dream? am i setting my expectations too high?

Just an Izzy thought... maybe you should go to your parents and explain your burning desire to them in great and enthusuastic detail. They will be happy you are a) talking to them b) its a good hobby c) you're not asking for drug money ... ask them if you can start a Lego making scheme with them, where you work your megablock off around the house and or yard in return for a deposit on a certain set that you desire. The more jobs you do, the more they pay off. They will be proud that they have a mature minded, willing worker for a child and will (hopefully) happily comply with your (my) idea. *y* *y* *y*

No guarentees, but its worth a try. My parents has similar plans when I was younger.

Well if you're not an AFOL, why set your expectations at the level of one? You don't get the parts and funding overnight generally :-D If I were you, I'd concentrate on building one really super detailed and great building and/or feature of your town at a time! It should take awhile, and if you use bricklink, it shouldn't be THAT expensive.

Do it in your spare time, make small things! Only when you have the funding and time should you move on to another project. I think you might be setting your sights a bit too high for right now (eyes bigger than your stomach). Just take it nice and slow, this is a hobby remember, you're supposed to enjoy it :-P

Don't worry, you'll get there eventually!

We already tried that, except i have a extraordinary dislike of Work ethic so i usually only work if i have to...

:S

well, we have rich neighbors my sister babysits for and she gets payed around 5-100$ each time...Maybe i could get the same amount if i mow their lawn? First comes the issue of me not being good with lawnmowers...never used one.

@#$%?!? i said that to mom and she said their kids were old enough to mow their lawn...

i need rich people to exploit work for...

If you're not willing to work then that is not something anyone can help you with.

Do you think any AFOL's don't have to work long and hard hours at jobs most of us probably don't even like, day in day out for years on end just to start looking for some of the sets we like???

I'm afraid she's right, that's the whole point to work! If you don't work just to survive, you work to get what you want. If working for it isn't worth it for you, then maybe you don't really want it all that much.

You need to take these things into consideration, nobody's getting things for free (with the exception of copmike :'-( )

I would, real jobs tend to have decent total paychecks, even at 7dollars@hour when you add it all up at pay period, but child labor laws are NOT my friend...i am TOTALLY capable of Making smoothies, salads or sandwiches at the lifecafe in lifetime fitness like my cousin does, BLAST IT...and i owe my cousin nary 100$ from begging for LEGO or game boy games...

Well, I am but it's just a freakin' ice cube tray.

Maig, you're hilarious! :-D Of course you have a better work ethic than half the world's legal work force. "Don't lose the dreams inside your head, they'll only be there 'til you're dead, so dream..."--Dave Matthews Band

Izzy and SW4J are right, use that work ethic and wit to start building your dream. I'm 30 and I run my own business and I'm just now making Albriquerque, although I don't call it that, I call it ... city ... :-/ ... apparently I'm not as clever as you.

Don't be in a hurry to grow up and start working. "Hold on to sixteen as long as you can, changes come around real soon, make us women and men."--John Cougar Mellencamp

What's with me being the pop music quoting wise sage? That's annoying. I'll stop.

Have fun building your city maig and keep us updated on your progress.

Ok. oh well, it'll be getting a freight train and a train station come nov. 15, a dock and a passenger train come christmas, and all the more hundreds of dollars worth of debt with my cousin in between! (we rented out our finished basement to him...he has lots of vintage gaming...)

Don't expect me to pay you back!

Besides, i guess i have more time to plan my layout, once my cousin gets that uneeded table in his basement up in the computer room...

Hot shower and hinkley-induced optimism ON!

(Although Market street and cafe corner will have to wait X-O , and LEGO-LOCO is terribly inadequate for layout planning due to the sets used in it being outdated...maybe i can make a mod for LOCO to use newer sets, making it more adequate?)

P.S: my budget makes me plan birthdays and christmas carefully, so i've become a better strategist (is that a word?) my sister got me a hamster last year. i named her smokey. she's a bit of a jerk, and i have to bottle-feed her water, because her old, fine-working water bottle broke and i cant hang the new one from the ceiling or walls... *n*

SUPER CHRISTMAS HAMSTER ON!

Just build your city with the bricks you have, and with the time it will be bigger and better! And take pics to see the evolution, so you can remember what it looks like at the beggining! It's what I've made and that's really fun! Here my fisrt pic of my second city:

Really small! :-P

I can understand your frustration, but one day you will have your perfecft own town...

I like this discussion because I can definitely identify with your "plight." For years and years, i relied mainly on Christmas and my birthday to get new Lego sets (and a small allowance helped a little too). This was my first little city layout back in '99 when I was about 14:

9_old_train_layout.jpg

As you can see, it was mostly "stock" sets, not too much original work there. I didn't really start doing that too much until the past five years or so. But just to let you know, getting a job doesn't necessarily equate to getting more Lego. Sure, you can get more but you eventually have to worry about getting a car, paying bills, college etc. And if you get a girlfriend, well there goes a whole crapload of what was once potential Lego money. ;-) I've been able to buy more Lego on my own but not really that much. My wants exceed my budget. X-D

Anywho, my advice to you would be to look into L-Draw and teaching yourself how to use it. Because it's virtual you've got an endless supply of parts, so you're not just limited to what you own. And when you're satisfied with what you have, check bricklink out for the parts you need. Take it slow. "Rome wasn't built in a day" after all.

What are your other hobbies, one of mine was working with classic cars and i discovered i could make an absolute killing for a few days work which i really enjoyed doing so there could be ways you could earn cash doing something you enjoy and so your work ethic won't be a problem.
