Barduck Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 I'm currently busy designing a new train to add to the collection, for the moment I'm designating him Project X but with a reason. The reason being: first forum member to guess what train it is will get, once finished, the PDF with the building instructions (I will be putting it on Bricklink afterwards) At the moment I'm reveling the following tips: - Is part of the UNION PACIFIC fleet (only 1 in service anymore, other either scrapped or at museums) - Was an experimentle train, hence the X - Is a Diesel First teaser: project X by Barduck12, on Flickr As the days pass, and as long a nobody guesses, I will be posting extra tips and teasers until the name is guessed. Oh and DmChylde, you are offcourse exclude from the guessing game, you allready know which train it is (but you'll get the instructions anyway if you want them) Let the game begin, lol Quote
v6TransAM Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 (edited) DDA40x 6936 is still in service :-) Edited November 8, 2014 by v6TransAM Quote
Barduck Posted November 8, 2014 Author Posted November 8, 2014 lol, never thought someone would guess it so fast with the little info I've given Quote
v6TransAM Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Not much on the Union Pacific you could post that I wouldn't guess, lifelong junkie here. I am always amazed at the stuff I see you guys do, especially with UP engines. Quote
Barduck Posted November 8, 2014 Author Posted November 8, 2014 well, you'll have the PDF with the instructions to build it yourself once I'm finished with the design and testing, will probably take a month or 2 Some extra teasers where I'm going with it. She'll feature a removable roof on the cabin with controls for the driver added project X by Barduck12, on Flickr Quote
v6TransAM Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 I for one will appreciate it, getting time to build it and acquire parts may be another matter. Eventually I would like to roster a Big Boy a Northern and a Challenger as well as various diesels. If you are looking for photos and drawings of all things Alco(build a C855 ), there is a book by Richard Steinbrenner called Alco: A Centennial Remembrance, entire history of Alco as well as steam and diesel drawings as well as prototype photos, awesome reference source Quote
Barduck Posted November 8, 2014 Author Posted November 8, 2014 atm I got the first design done for like 80%, she's 8 studs wide (10 at the middle part of the roof) and 109 studs long (yes, one hunderd and nine studs) and allready has over 2000 parts in her Quote
dr_spock Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 That was quick. I was thinking DD40AX too and I am not a life long UP fan. Do you plan to have it be able to negotiate standard LEGO curves? Quote
Barduck Posted November 8, 2014 Author Posted November 8, 2014 (edited) I'm doing bogies with 2 pf train motors under it, I've allready tested set up for one bogie and that takes curves and switches with no problem and is able to pull one of my UP coaches thru the corners. Time will tell if the whole train will be able to go thru normal LEGO curves but my first guess is that she will but it'll look weird. Edited November 8, 2014 by Barduck Quote
Barduck Posted November 8, 2014 Author Posted November 8, 2014 project X by Barduck12, on Flickr Some tampering and we're a bit further Quote
Barduck Posted November 8, 2014 Author Posted November 8, 2014 Got to say v6TransAM, that C855 Alco seems very interesting to build too Quote
ronenson Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Nice train. With that length, getting through a half circle is going to be very challenging or even impossible. Quote
dr_spock Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Got to say v6TransAM, that C855 Alco seems very interesting to build too Maybe you can make all 3. U50 from GE, C855 from ALCO. That would be so awesome. Quote
Barduck Posted November 8, 2014 Author Posted November 8, 2014 project X by Barduck12, on Flickr Going fast now, but time to call it a night Maybe you can make all 3. U50 from GE, C855 from ALCO. That would be so awesome. It would, but I also think my wife would find an awesome reason to punish me, lol Quote
Barduck Posted November 9, 2014 Author Posted November 9, 2014 New update: project X by Barduck12, on Flickr Quote
Barduck Posted November 9, 2014 Author Posted November 9, 2014 project X by Barduck12, on Flickr Now to correct some errors Quote
Barduck Posted November 9, 2014 Author Posted November 9, 2014 DDA40X by Barduck12, on Flickr changed the bogies (added 1 stud in length), took out some errors, changed position of the front ladder. Now to put everything over in MLCad and while I do that look where I can lose some bricks to reduce brick count (3200 atm) Quote
v6TransAM Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Only 3200 bricks? I'm not sure your really trying I really wish we has some type of 3 axle truck pieces, whether sideframes or pieces to make them appear at least semi realistic. I can see 4 axle truck pieces never happening. Some of the other big boys of diesel used 4 axles on two b trucks with a span bolster. Quote

v6TransAM Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Aren't you going to be building one too once you get the PDF instructions guessing prize? Hey, I'm dumb enough to try anything at least once Might have to strangle my 4 yr old if he ever took it apart with 3200 pieces You do not want to know how many times U have rebuilt 7937, 7838 and the HE he has, but we have fun. legoman666 Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Are your trucks articulated or do they have sliding axles? BBB needs to release some blind small drivers... Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Hey in this months I've worked on the same project ...that's incredible! Very nice work by the way! Quote
nivam Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 One of the most impressive train engines... I hope I had the skills to recreate such thing... Quote
Barduck Posted November 12, 2014 Author Posted November 12, 2014 got a video up of the chassis (quick and dirty moc'up) driving around a small layout. https://www.flickr.c...07/15773138555/ As well as new renders from LDraw this time: DDA40X by Barduck12, on Flickr Quote
detjensrobert Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 HOLY COW!! Thats huge!! will it be able to take lego curves, or just straight curves? Quote
