KeepLeft Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 (edited) I am busy designing my new city and I set myself a challenge to build an airport using only the parts from the GE. I did not manage to achieve that and had to use other spare parts mainly tan pieces and grey (bley) plates. Normally I do not include interiors in my bulidings but seeing as the GE had some well designed pieces I decided to make an interior as well. The outside of the building. Hopefully you can tell its an airport because of the plane mural on the left. The mural on the right is of the dear illustrious leader of my Lego state. Any city with so many police has to be a facist state and no facist state is complete without giant pictures of their leaders, hence the mural. The entrance in the middle leads to the ground floor with the typical bureaucratic infrastructure. A side view of the airport, I really love the slope roof. The door on the side is for the future skywalk that will lead to the plane. VIew from the back. The hole on the centre will be for the luggage conveyor belt. On arrival you have to go through security and then to passport control where the escalator will take you to the first floor lounges and departure gates. At the other end of the building the arrival hall has the passport control officer. And then on to the luggage retrieval and customs. The first floor is more welcoming with a place to eat, play a game and shop. Enjoy a pizza. You could watch the planes take off and land, or go to duty-free. Thank you flying Air Skadonk. Reminds me of the sort of small regional airports that use buildings from the 1940s/50s (my local airport used to look a bit like that before it was extended/modernised.) The interior is really well thought out too. It's even more impressive that it's based on the GE. I'd love to see you add a bit more to it - control tower and a hangar maybe? (You never know your illustrious leader might need it one day if his people rise up against him and he needs an escape!!) Nice work! Quote

I still want to put flat tiles on the floor and some other bits like newspaper kiosk and I am also going include some infrastructure to the airport like a hanger, control tower and fire station. Comrade Commander Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 I will be honest and say that when I saw the first picture of the front I was like "meh" but then I saw the following pictures and it really grew on me! The slanted roof is great and the interior details are good! If I might suggest just adding some additional details to the front (trees, bushes, etc) to make it pop a little more. KeepLeft Posted October 27, 2014 Author Posted October 27, 2014 The opening of the airport led to much confusion due to the lack of a check-in counter and huge delays in baggage security checks, so a new check-in counter was added serving Air Skadonk (flying only the best in 1960's Aeroflot propeller planes) which can now weigh and accept hold luggage. Also a new x-ray machine was added to ensure added security. The addition of an office with its own coffee machine was also high on the priority list to keep the workers happy. Quote

The facade, especially the windows section, is quite stylish with its Art Deco appeal, I like it very much. Lovely interior details, too. The roof on the other hand still needs some work in my opinion. Roofs are quite important since we usually look on Lego cities from above. Maybe some glass elements would help - you'd get a better look at the interior, too. Looking forward to the further development of this! Quote

You have done quite a good job there. Clever use of the interior, too. I wonder, though, which side of the building is the airside and which is the land side? The planespotter is taking pictures on the side with the entrance, so it must be the airside, but then you have got the conveyor belt on the land side. Well spotted, I just placed some minifigs to take the photos (and there was no real space on the landing strip side) and the inside layout is not complete yet. The main entrance is the grey entrance which will eventually have a train station next to it providing a quick shuttle service to the airport. Quote
