Since the invention of Bricklink, we have a way to find some rather unique and strange pieces. One source that may have been unavailable to us previously are 'Fabuland' pieces, or pieces that would have been in the 'Belville' line.

Since I have spotted a couple of pieces out there, and a few system builders have been using them in their MOCs, I thought I would find out if there were any pieces out there anyone has found particularly useful!

Here are just a few I know of...

1. Belville Bucket.

I have seen it used as a bell (by me) and as the end of a cannon or deck gun. The piece is quite useful for things that require a 'flared' end!

2. The Fabuland Oar eventually ended up evolving to a slightly different oar like the one in the Viking Sets, but it originally looked like this...

Then we got this one in various colors in the Belville sets.

It is avaibalable in some odd colors like lime green and yellow. When it made it to the system level, we got them in brown and black as well!

3. The Fabuland roof. This guy was recently featured in Phes's MOC.

4. Fabuland and Belville also have a slightly larger rowboat...

I haven't used one, but it could be useful!

I don't want people to just mention every Belville piece out there, we could search Bricklink for those ourselves, what I am hoping for is some suggestions on how these pieces are being used in our Pirate MOCs, or piece we know could be useful!

	Hi all

I was recently luckily enough to take part in the LEGO inside tour.

On the tour we met LEGO Pirate designer (and overall LEGO legend) Niels Milan Pedersen.

He drew a quick sketch for me featuring himself and a certain pirate captain, I thought some of you in this forum might like to see it

Before I went a head and made a new thread, I figured I would ask in here first. How does everyone feel about just a general chit chat/ get to know you thread for here in the Pirates forum? I feel that it will help everyone get better acquainted with each other, sometimes it's not always easy to respond to people, if you don't know them very well. I just feel it would help foster more discussion.

For example today, I am working on my Pirates display (I plan on doing a video in the near future). I am watching LOTR while doing the building and what not. I also watched the new Beverly Hills Cop movie last night (I really enjoyed it).

But none of this discussion is really appropriate for any of the existing threads, unless one already exists and is buried.

BrickLink Series 5 winners have been announced!

The Thieves of Tortuga has been selected for crowdfunding.

I will most likely get it depending on final cost. I liked Caribbean Port equally, maybe even slightly more despite it not being as detailed. I liked getting a ship and more of a dock. Tortuga has about 1600 more pieces, more detail but also more expensive. I’m just happy to have a set based on a port town.

The Transylvania set is quite the set as well.

I’m a little disappointed that the Portal Of Shadows didn’t make it. It was really unique.

	Hey everyone,

I've been reading on this forum for many years (silently), but only got to create an account now. I recently started a new YouTube channel which is a mix of showing my classic LEGO pirates world that I'm building, but also doing research and deep dives into the design of these old sets. Several people suggested to me, that there would be an interest on this forum in seeing this kind of content, so I figured I post it here :)

Would be happy to hear if you would like to see this kind of content, and if you have any suggestions, ideas or feedback, would love to discuss!

It's been a hot minute since I last gave an updated a look at my complete classic Pirates collections!

My LEGO rooms are almost never this clean and organized, so I decided to take advantage of the opportunity while they were to take some photos and a long video tour!

In addition to the complete classic Pirates collection, on display are also nearly all of the other Pirate ships ever released to present. Plus there is also my complete classic Castle collection, Western, some Space factions (Blacktron, Space Police, and M:Tron), Rock Raiders, Time Cruisers/Time Twisters, along with some of the classic Town sets I own. There is also a lot of more modern themes represented such as the complete Lord of the Rings sets, some Star Wars (mostly Yoda and Boba Fett related), Marvel (Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man), Doctor Who, 60s TV Batman, Transformers, Star Trek, The Goonies, Back to the Future, and so, so much more!

	Enjoy!

All of this information was already covered in the Secret Life of LEGO Bricks book (this video is from the author of that book), but if you haven't read the book it's worth a watch!

So there's a variety of pirate stuff in pick a brick, quite a lot of it I want (say 30/40) items but it always seems that some of it is out of stock. Is there some kind of trick or are you all just ordering as much as you can and then more if the bits that were out of stock come back in?!

If they're molding it as they go along it feels like I should be able to order stuff that's out of stock and have them keep the order together and send it as one.

There is none for sale on Bricklink and there is no price guide either.
I also haven't seen it in the collections of collectors who have EVERYTHING from the Classic Pirates ;)

According to BrickLink:
'This gameboard and instructions are known to have been included with some copies of sets 6270 and 6285.
When included with set 6270, it was shrink-wrapped to the outside.'

There is one for sale that I know of....but it's difficult to determine the value without a reference.

Second (this same seller actually sold 2 copies TO THE SAME BUYER):

	https://www.ebay.com/itm/317825841141

All 3 copies clearly showed the late 1990 and on disabled version of the cannon sold here in the USA NOT the original shooting cannon many of us got in 1989 here in the USA and that everyone else got throughout the world.

The point of bringing this up is because we are at a point where we are hitting critical mass. Sealed copies of these sets are now becoming rarer than ever and original USA versions of these sets are even rarer. Unfortunately, while we can clearly see the cannons in these versions, what we do not know is how later of a version these sets are. Throughout the years, Lego literally changed the molds on many parts - from the heads to the small island base plates to the sharks to the treasure chests and obviously the cannons (it also appears very early European versions had stickers and white flags) and unfortunately the ONLY way to know what year a sealed set was produced is to... gasp... open it! You will be able to date the parts based on these mold changes AND based on the medium shop at home included (<-- the catalog is actually the better way of knowing when that set was produced and over the years the sets from previous years were given updated catalogs in the subsequent years they were released).

We also are coming to a time where many users, simply put, no longer care about what's called "period specific" parts, meaning people are not very likely getting the best value for their buck (especially in the case of these sets) and it opens the doors to improper sales and misinformation.

It does matter. Not only for authenticity but for the sake of preservation.

It definitely matters when choosing the correct head/torso/leg/arms/hands/headgear for some mini-figures, especially the older Black Spaceman from the 1980s.

Unfortunately these items are so rare people are practically forced to pay outrageous prices or just simply risk never getting them (i.e., if the seller didn't sell these - and I had seen these expensive versions listed for YEARS and the sellers even getting attacked on Facebook - what would have happened when the seller died - would the family had disposed of these and they become the property of landfills or what?).

Scary times folks and a reality to face, eventually nobody gives a crap and that's scary.

What' going to happen to unsealed copies of these $1,000 sets in 40 years? Assuming those sets grow the same amount Black Seas had - from $110 (the 1992 version, not the $90 1989 version) to $4,000 in almost 40 years, those $1,000 sets will be worth about $40,000 in 2066. Who in the world will have the money for $40,000 Lego sets? Who even had the money for $8,000 in two sealed Black Seas sets?

If you bought these sets and ever plan to open them, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a video of you opening them and ALL OF THE CONTENTS!. This will help many of us in understanding how the parts changed over the years.

Bricklink, from my experience, seems to be the more accurate - over Peeron and ReBrickable - in at least noting these changes. Some of my observations are from my memory of owning these sets with some help from looking at sealed sets on Ebay.

Also note: This forum seems to have made drastic changes and isn't allowing me to attach images so unfortunately you'll have to use the links. That's why my avatar changed from a rare coin to a generic Jolly Roger flag, my 40KB image was too much for their 1KB limitation, lol.

Even though the next non-licensed Pirates theme is 2-3 years away at minimum, it's still possible to speculate on how the new parts, innovations and building styles of today might affect the future of the theme. With the reviews for POTC Silent Mary just coming out, I thought that would be a good place to start.

Weaponry: The previous POTC sets all had the classic brown guns and rifles, but the guns in Silent Mary are all pearl dark grey (or something similar). It could just be a new look specifically for Silent Mary and/or any future POTC sets, but it's possible that, after 28 years, grey guns are going to be the new normal.

Headgear: The 2015 Soldiers didn't have tricorns, but the ghost soldiers on the Silent Mary did, so I think it's entirely possible we will see tricorns on the soldiers again in the future. Also, I don't see why we wouldn't see the balding bandanna look from the Scallywag Pirate used again, maybe in other traditional bandanna colours like white, blue and green.

While the updates have been tested in multiple web browsers, on multiple devices, as per usual, something has probably broken somewhere, so please report in this topic.

	-----------------------------------

	It has finally happened!

Eurobricks has been upgraded to the latest version of the Invision Power Board and software you can read the full announcement here.

So hopefully this resolves many of the glitches the forum was previously experience.

It also means there is currently a LEGO Pirates Forum theme for the new version of the forum.

But that may change with enough nagging from forum members

	-----------------------------------

It appears there is indeed interest for a new LEGO Pirates Forum theme.

So how about we start by refreshing the banner?

Below is a starting point, but which sets, minifigs and whatever else should be incorporated?

Look what I found in a 1989 Donald Duck from a thrift store: the announcement of the launch of the Pirates theme in the Netherlands!

Plus another one in a different Duck:

Our daughter really likes reading Duckies. So I have an excuse to go through old Ducks when I find them in a thrift store
I have started a NEW LEGO Pirates LORE series on my YT channel called "Famous Lego Pirates." I'll be going in-depth on ALL the famous LEGO Pirates. I am basing this series on actual LEGO lore, actual historical evidence and just my imagination. I figured it would be BEST to start with Jack Sparrow!! Is he the MOST famous LEGO Pirate EVER??

Ahoy!

Ever felt like there's not enough general talk going on here about what matters most in these waters - MOCs?

Ever got frustrated over a certain issue with a WIP that you could need help with?

Ever thought about posting a WIP but didn't think it would deserve its own thread?

Ever wanted to announce a huge, mind boggling, or simply your next project and ask your fellow EB members what they think about that idea?

Or have you ever just felt the urge to tease everyone with a blurred picture of your creation or some facts about it before releasing it for good?

Well, hesitate no further, this is the place for you! Use this thread as a vessel for all the otherwise unmentioned MOC related talk, use it to discuss sail sizes and capstan designs, ask for ideas, help others with their MOC issues and tease your fellow mateys... with pics of your creations, of course

I can't find if anyone else posted this but after the top left 2 cannons (firing / black handle), the non-firing cannons on the left use the newer, smaller Lego logo. The ones on the right match the logo seen in the shooting / firing cannons which were issued here in the USA. This information can help you to better pinpoint which group of cannons you may own.

You can view all 4 variations here:

I am happy to announce I have found a sold copy of the 1990 Dealer Catalog and am linking the page below - (you will want to save the images before Ebay purges it). This isn't mine and I definitely would never [pay the $425 price wanted.

The catalog, in some ways, reaffirms what we already know. Here in the USA, the rest of the Pirates sets were released in 1990. There were two quarters that featured Pirates commercials with Jack the Lego Maniac as part of the LEGOLAND theme - First quarter (December 1989-January) and October-December-1990.

Some commercials can be found here:

And because I keep reading about the "Inventor" commercials they started years ago, here's one. You can find the rest on Youtube:

However, what really made me bawling my eyes out was the actual 20 foot store display sample showing EXACTLY WHERE THE PIRATE SETS WERE SET ON THE SHELVES. I always remembered Black Seas being on the bottom because I always sat down on the store floor and stared at the inlay of the set (even though I already had the set lol). Plus we get some interesting facts about the new and popular Christmas sets from that era, the then-new Build-A-Bunny, and we learn about Impulse sets, Trial Size Promotion Sets.

No where in this catalog does it suggest the release date for ANY Legoland set (except the trial size/impulse versions) which means we still don't have hard evidence dating the 1990 Pirate sets, we're only left to assume our memories of buying Pirates sets in early 1990 and thus getting black handled cannons before the later releases that year came with the non-firing single piece cannon (which dominated the USA Pirate and Western market over the next decade).

So, I was originally going to do something sacreligious.

Not the kind of sacrelige that will get you banned from a public online forum, but the fun, polarizing kind, where either you love it or detest it.

I was going to make modifications to the original Black Seas Barracuda that I got a couple weeks ago! Make a thread about it, post some pictures, pitch some ideas, encourage you lot to share some ideas, a bit of give and take!

Then, they announce the Pirates of Barracuda Bay.

AND HOW IT CAN BE REBUILT TO AN UPDATED VERSION OF THE DARK SHARK HERSELF!!!

	Heavy Breathing intensifies

I'm going to keep my classic barracuda intact, possibly do one small thing to it (expanding/retracting rigging play feature from 6289, The Redbeard Runner) and that's it.

Then proceed to commit sacrelige, gut, and modify the Black Seas Barracuda; 2020 edition to my black heart's content!

While I don't have the set proper, what little information I've gleened from reviews and videos, is that it's difficult to access the lower decks on the model. and there are only three of the spring-loaded cannons. Right now, once I get the model, I'm going to build it, appraise it, and see what I can do to make the interrior more accessible, and what creature comforts, like the inn furniture and cots, can be kept or repurposed into a galley, or crew quarters. And grab a couple more spring loaded cannons. Well; the classic Barracuda has 4. Might go ahead and up that to maybe 6 or 8. I may also look into or entertain the idea of emulating the navigation wheel playfeature from 6286, the Skull's Eye Schooner.

Aside from that, those of you who have happened across review copies of the set, let me ask you this:

What play features do you want in your dream Dark-Shark???

In my continuation of updating vital Pirate information so everyone has the correct information - especially Influencers - I found a very good reliable source that dispels the full details to how it began. Across the Internet fans had hinted on it but never demonstrated any evidence that connected what we knew to actually how Pirates originated - until now!

If you read the article published by Blocks Magazine, Issue 100, we learned - from Niels Milan Pedersen again - that in 1986 The Lego Group had actual Pirate models completed and ready to go BUT WAS DELAYED UNTIL 1986 because the Castle theme was so successful.

But now - thanks to the book, The Secret Life of Lego Bricks, we actually learn - again through Niels Milan Pedersen - that Lego Pirates' origins began IMMEDIATELY after the launch of the Castle theme in 1984.

	https://www.flickr.com/photos/203530674@N07/54816846910/in/album-72177720329308752

I uploaded the pages from The Secret Life of Lego for everyone to read and see and learn about the Western theme's early cancellation (which most of us knew) but also details on Europa and Roman themes that haven't really been discussed anywhere else.

I am still reading Brick by Brick. That book - which goes back and forth too much - has a lot of factual information about the rise/fall of Lego in the 1990s. Many of the wikis have the specific reasons correct but they're incorrect with the dates and I'll put the details about that in the appropriate forum at another time.

TIMELINE OF Niels Milan Pedersen / PIRATES LINE:

Summer 1980: Niels Milan Pedersen is hired by The Lego Group

1984: Castle is relaunched / Pirates are automatically envisioned

 1986: Pirates theme / models completed and ready for launch ;

1986: Pirates Launch DELAYED due to success of Castle theme

1989: Pirates theme is launched throughout the world.

1990: America releases the rest of the 1989 Pirates line the rest of the world got in 1989

Are there any other magazines I should be made aware or books that give the full facts? I am NOT considering The Lego Book (all editions) valid due to the enormous amount of errors and how they're hastily organized/published.

(Ongoing Investigation)

Recently I made a list of all the known North American exclusive sets and even polybags, etc. However, when researching sets released in 1992 I found myself running into a problem: There is no evidence that 1696 - as a boxed set with 1696 - was EVER released anywhere outside of Europe. I also am suggesting that 1464 was the North American version.

However, I only have one 1994 SAH US catalog and none from the UK and it does not mention which set number appeared in the 1994 Value Pack numbered 1900.

	https://brickipedia.fandom.com/wiki/1900_Special_Bonus_Pack?file=1900-1.png

So as of right now, I can only speculate. Why? Because the Brickipedia listing for 1900 claims its 1696 that's included in this bundle. However, there is no evidence suggesting which set number and the one catalog entry at Brickpedia is unsourced:

	https://brickipedia.fandom.com/wiki/1900_Special_Bonus_Pack

What's worse? Bricklink has a conflicting date for this Value pack as 1993:

	https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?S=1900-1#T=I

However, this directed me to search the 1993 SAH catalogs and, of course, Brickipedia is wrong and Bricklink is right. In the Spring 1993 SAH Catalog, on page 17 you can see this set listed - but by its name, NOT its number. What's worse... NONE of the catalogs in 1992 I have and NONE of the two in 1993 even mention 1464 (probably why Brickset lists it as a retailer set since those eventually made the catalog a year after they were released).

	https://brickset.com/library/catalogues

Can ANYONE verify is this Bonus Pack was even made available to sell since it was only seen once and does anyone have any other information - besides the polybag for 1464 and box from 1696 showing them for sale anywhere?

If not all we have to go by is what people have listed on Ebay and past auction sites and I stand by my original statement...

1464 is the number for the US REtail polybag

1696 was available only in Europe in a box

Set Bonus Pack #1900 contained Pirate's Lookout - we do NOT have a specific set number listed for the Pirate set and ultimately it's irrelevant since, as far as we can tell, the sets are the same but packaged differently.

	HOWEVER

I believe this find on E-bay suggests I am correct and that 1696 was available as a special promotional item in France (this seller is from Germany):

As I was searching for 1464, other sets with the numerical sequence 146* popped up and I noticed these were the same sets in the Bonus pack. My discovery also led me to find 1695, which also has a polybag that lookes similar to 1463.

What do you think the other Pirates commercial was? I know about the Pirates / Castle Lego Maniac commercial (it aired fourth quarter and you can find some recordings of it along with many program airings, such as a December airing of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1989) but I don't think I have seen another Lego Pirates USA commercial.

As many of you know, I have been frantically trying to gather as much information as possible about vintage Pirate Lego sets, mainly here in America because we had sooo many changes in product design (boxes) and availability (cannon types). Not to mention, as we near the 40 year mark, we are faced with a serious problem: Not too many unopened MISB original sets exist and the ones that have been opened and logged have likely been lost to time or simply their contents weren't logged.

This information is helpful especially to both buyers and sellers in knowing what they are facing. Some sets, like 1989's Buried Treasure, went through differences over the years - The 1989-1991 versions contained treasure chests without slots and thin-hinged lids as well as solid-stud heads, while the 1992 version - impossible to know if you have it even if you have the box unopened - changed to the 1992 changes of hollow stud heads and slotted chests. Not to mention I read that someone's set did not come with any inserts but a 1992 copy actually came with the 1992 Pirates leaflet as well as a Club leaflet, for example.

Not Piratey, but I also found one 1991 set (6509) with a 1991,1993 copyright on the box that complied with the ASTM F963-92 toy standard, not the 1986 one the early Pirate sets did.

Anyway, on with this show, so to speak...

In 1991, The Lego Group continued to use the same yellow packaging as they had been doing since 1978 (the older LEGOLAND white with five-color flag had been started in 1966, although Brickipedia claims LEGOLAND would be started s a theme in 1969). However, something was missing - these yellow boxes were known to fans as "blue-on-yellow" and, you guessed it, the blue LEGOLAND logo had been removed for ALL 1991 Pirate sets introduced that year. This is very strange and I consider this another transitional period. For the record, I have not examined if Europe and other regions' sets reflected these changes, so unless I say otherwise, everything I am talking about is simply about American packaging.

BUT in 1992, one of the worst things that could happen to Lego Pirate packaging happened - the boxes were now purple and branded with the SYSTEM logo and crappy Pirates logo (But PURPLE? That's unforgiven!). Now I have been researching to see when The Lego Group "went wrong" so to speak with drastic changes and this is definitely the beginning (more on this topic later as I am still trying to narrow down the facts). Not only this, but in this year all of the minifigure heads were now hollow AND the treasure chests had slots in them (this was a great move since the originals wore out very fast and easy). Additional color note: Castle kept the yellow; Town got Blue; Space got Black and Paradisa had Pink.

So I am using this time to list all of the Lego Pirate sets released first in 1991 AND THEN REPACKAGED IN 1992. Also worthy to note, any Pirate sets released in 1989 and 1990 retained their same blue-on-yellow LEGOLAND packages with their original copyright dates: Here in the USA, only Black Seas Barracuda, Forbidden Island, Eldorado Fortress, and Caribbean Clipper had a 1989 date on the box while every other 1989 set released here in the USA in 1990 had a 1989, 1990 date - as far as I can tell. We already know both Shop at Home and Club members were given opportunities to buy all the other sets (minus the comic) in 1989 here in the USA BUT I have yet to see concrete evidence to what their packaging looked like (and it is only a guess they used the 1989, 1990 date - assuming they were even actually released at all).

(Note all of my photos are in albums so follow them and you can see more of the boxes)

Also, note the box art on the yellow 1991 boxes below reflect the new cannon changes since none of the 1990 boxes included changed box or instruction art.

I have NOT investigated most boxes for sets produced/released for 1993-1997 so I am unaware if any of those had any changes but I hope to report back with any if they did.

Introduction

Welcome to my sixth review on Eurobricks! On my way to review every old Pirates set that I buy new (full story on my 6247 - Bounty Boat review), I've chosen what I consider to be the first Lego Pirates set ever (as it has the smallest set number among the first wave) and one of the two impulse sets (the other one being 6245 - Harbor Sentry). Its name is Buried Treasure, which is one of the most iconic scene for any Pirate stuff. Is this treasure a real jewel, or should have it been kept buried?

Product Details

As with all first wave Pirates sets, we have a classic yellow box. The picture shows a pirate, a monkey and the treasure which seems to have just been dug out.

Here we have our classics alternate models. You can see closer pictures in the next chapter, and built models in the last chapter.

An alternate setup of the main model.

~Alternate models~

As with other impulse sets, it's hard to make alternate models out of such a small part count. However I really like them, especially the first and third models, which depict nice scenes.

~Box opening~

Yo-ho-ho! Every remaining MISB Buried Treasure now has gone up in value!

Inside the box

One loose plate, one plastic bag, and the folded instructions. Unlike any other Pirates set I've reviewed, it didn't come with a promotional catalog or flyer.

Instructions

A single two-face sheet, with only five steps. Any skilled builder shouldn't have too much problem

~Parts and minifigure~

Part layout

There's not many interesting parts here. However it's always nice to get a monkey, and we never have too much gold pieces!

Minifigure

It is the most common Pirates minifigure after Captain Redbeard. I shot his back, but at this time they wasn't being printed. I have a nostalgic feeling looking at it, as it brings back so much good memories!

~The build~

After step 3

The whole structure is built here, as you can see it's not very elaborated without the accessories.

~The finished models~

Main model

With the accessories added, it really becomes a lovely scene. At this time, the shining metal gold made its first appearance and looked way better than the yellow round 1x1 plates that came in Castle sets.

Alternate model 1

I love it, it's a clever use of parts to make something different. The monkey seems nice here.

Alternate model 2

I don't quite get why the treasure's lid is put like that. It's the weakest alternate model in my humble opinion. The monkey is holding a sword this time.

Alternate model 3

Again, we have a clever setup by remonving the pirate legs. However the chest looks really deep that way . Meanwhile, the monkey keeps getting nastier, with a cutlass AND a pistol. The pirate should really be careful...

~Final thoughts~

Design: 7/10 - It's hard to rate impulse sets. This one is average, with a really small sand and rock structure. What makes the set good is all those accessories which come along.

Parts: 8/10 - Several useful accessories, a monkey, and gold! However I think it's lacking a treasure map.

Minifig: 6/10 - Back in 1989, it was a good way to start getting pirates minifigures, but today, it really is a common minifigure.

Build: -/10 - Built under one minute, so there is nothing much to say.

Playability: 6/10 - Having a bluecoat instead of the monkey would have make it more playable. Why not include a treasure map?

Alternate models: 9/10 - A clever use of parts, and actually I think the first one looks better than the main model.

Price: 10/10 - $3,25 for all those parts was a pretty good deal. Today it can be found for ~$4, which is still a great deal for Pirates lovers.

Conclusion: 6/10 - A good impulse set, and a nice way to start a Pirates collection. As a standalone though it's not a must-have.
